In my opinion, the article contains a lot of bunk. I think the additions help balance that.

Some types of female genital mutilation are certainly worse than male circumcision as practiced in the US. However, Sunni circumcision, as described in that article I linked to, is quite similar.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it does. Correlation is a measure, but not a cause in and of itself. So correlation can point to a set of circumstances that might cause a particular event to occur, and we can link the two through logic and / or experimentation but a mere correlation of numbers doesn't actually prove anything in and of itself. Although this is arguing semantics because what I really meant to say was "correlation does not necessarialy equal causation" but that doesn't boil down to neat little phrase for TWW.

In this case, a measurement of education against diseases would probably point to similar numbers and be a stronger indicator as education generally leads to higher wages which in turn leads to better hygiene and better access to health-care as well as the benefit that education presents in and of itself.
