spooky, the prestige was HORRIBLE compared to the Illusionist. IMOIllusionist seemed alot more possible than some magic machine that makes copies of everything, and a love story thrown in for kicks. I really didnt like the prestige.Children of men, what did you guys like about it? About an hour in I wanted to kill the damn kid so I could leave.
11/27/2007 9:40:17 AM
Children of Men killed part of my soul and I liked it.

I'm truly surprised that no one has mentioned Alex Proyas' "Dark City" - it's an incredible sci-fi thriller that most people will love the hell out of.I'm really happy that "Babe: Pig in the City" has gotten the kind of love it has, too. I just watched that again the other day, and - as two people have pointed out - it's truly a wonderful, wonderful movie.I second or third the thoughts on "Frailty"I also wanted to note the following as highly underrated:Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune"Two Sam Raimi films: "A Simple Plan" and "The Gift"Peter Sollett's "Raising Victor Vargas"Peter Weir's "The Mosquito Coast"Billy Bob Thornton's "Daddy and Them""Broken Lizard's Club Dread" (if you like stupid funny)John Sayles' "Lone Star"Bob Rafelson's "Five Easy Pieces" (has Jack Nicholson's famous Toast scene)Other notes on this thread:--"The Shawshank Redemption" did NOT win an Oscar. It was voted the best movie never to win one in a recent poll (source forgotten)--"Babe: PITC" was Siskel's #1 in 1998, but not Ebert's. Ebert picked, and led me to watch, "Dark City"--"Donnie Darko?" That's like saying "The Princess Bride" or "The Boondock Saints" is underrated - everyone owns that fucking movie.

you have to wonder what the word "underrated" meansthe question is, is the movie underrated by people who have "good" opinionsbecause, honestly, who gives a shit about what most people thinkI LOVE AMERICAN PIE!!!!!!!!!! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
11/27/2007 11:00:41 AM
oldboy. nobody has ever heard of it, and its great.

Seriously, if there's been an American theatrical release, an upcoming Nicholas Cage remake, and a motherfucking BOLLYWOOD remake, it's not that obscure. On top of that, underrated is not the same as unknown. My 9th grade spanish class film spoof of The X-Files isn't underrated just because none of you have seen it--even if the cinematography was fucking brilliant.

^well Ill disagree again. One uses a magical machine that makes copies of hats, people, whatever. The other just uses magic, and what i assume to be projectors.haha, if you think I have bad taste. I like Hook with robin williams, so you might have a point.Speaking of children of men, other than being shitty even to look at, did you like how they were all dressed as the lost boys from hook? I couldnt imagine anyone outside an arts major liking that film.bubbe, Ill give that one scene was pretty awesome. People all running out of the trees and down the hill was good, but not worth the whole sucky movie.[Edited on November 27, 2007 at 12:32 PM. Reason : .]

I find it hard to believe that "Groundhog Day" is underrated. Everyone loves that movie
11/27/2007 3:16:09 PM
so is any and every movie considered underrated?Someone actually mentioned Children of Men? It had wide critical appeal and did well at the Box Office.and it was one of my favorite movies of that year.ps. I would have liked The Prestige a lot more if it weren't so damn predictable. But I still liked it more than the illusionist

i'll say it again; Children of Men was fucking amazing. I definitely hadn't been "wowed" like that by a movie in a long time and none have done it since. I'm lucky to have seen it in the theater when it came out.The Prestige was a million times better than the Illusionist, but as movies, neither of them were very special. I don't get the argument in this thread because the movies simply weren't that great, or at least great enough to be argued over.I also have to mention Repo Man. That movie rules. Please go see it.
11/27/2007 7:58:58 PM
From a cinematography/technical aspect I can respect Children of Men, however, I still came away from the movie with a meh opinion, I need to watch it again.
11/27/2007 8:29:45 PM
i was really really really into children of men until the very endand then i laughed uncontrollably for 45 minutes straight because it dawned on me it was a comedy

I say Bug mainly because people got the wrong idea from the trailer. most of the people I talked to hated the movie, but it seemed their reason was that it wasn't a retarded factory sealed silly horror flick. But it was a pretty strong psychological thriller with great acting and characters. IMO[Edited on November 28, 2007 at 10:14 AM. Reason : FSND]

Undercover BrotherOn a side note, I just watched 28 weeks later on my computer. It was a good movie and all, but its ending was so blah. Given, it left off the story with a cliffhanger (stupid kid continuing the plague, eiffel tower in background, yadda yadda). It was just lame how it immeadiately went to credits with a downbeat song. They could at least thrown in some hard rock or somethin to level things out. Poor concluding for a good horror flick imo.

The Thin Red Line and Enemy at the Gates (both great but people were suffering from war movie fatigue after saving private ryan.)Ronin - yeah shut up I liked it.Menace II Society - referenced and parodied but not many people have seen it.Malcom X - our ELP teacher freshman year of highschool made us watch this and I'm glad he did; it's a damn good movie that got some critics' support, but also did not get the press I think it should have.Equilibrium - everyone's favorite not-quite-matrix movie. Too bad that after Ultraviolet it became clear that this movie wasn't so much an unpolished gem from an up and coming director/writer, but instead something that was mercifully saved by his lack of free-reign.[Edited on November 29, 2007 at 2:50 AM. I'm going to second "Ronin," which has the best car chase ever, and Ben Stiller's "The Cable Guy," which is ficking hilarious.
