Does anyone expect that the price of HDTVs will actually fall considerably in the new year? I read a couple different pieces over the past 3-4 months saying that they should. I've been holding out for awhile now and I can wait longer. I'll definitely get into a 42" one before next football season, but if the price drops between January and August are going to be minimal, then I am going to go ahead and get into one for the bulk of the bball schedule and for March Madness.

yes, they should drop considerably with the widespread introduction of LED backlit LCD panels[Edited on November 26, 2007 at 10:14 AM. Reason : s]

I'm debating to either wait for an LED tv to be affordable or just pick up a really sweet Sharp Aquos or Samsung now.

Care to explain why a newer initially more expensive technology is going to cause considerable price drops across the spectrum? I presume you mean the current non-led lit TVs, but I can't really read between the lines of a post as short as yours.
11/26/2007 10:30:44 AM
his post made plenty of sense. Current/Old LCD tech. will be less expensive with the introduction of newer/better LCD tech. which in this case is backlit LED's.Of course that is just an assumption, for all we know they will keep pricing close to what it is now and just set the LED LCD's to be that much higher.

^^ i guess you're new to technology. here's the way it works - you have a top of the line product that is priced at the highest price point the market can bear. then you get a newer and better product which supplants that (now older) product at the highest price point and the (now old) product supplants the previously old, (now old older) middle of the road pricehopefully there are enough lines in this post for you to read between - if not, the writing between the lines goes something like this, "1 D 10 T"[Edited on November 26, 2007 at 10:59 AM. led backlit price replaces top end 'standard' LCD price, and then everything else trickles downdurrwhen's your time frame? one day? one year? one month?i'd expect to possibly see a drop before xmas, definitely before spring[Edited on November 26, 2007 at 11:19 AM. Reason : cox]

LED backlit displays are already very close to an affordable price point, so I'm not sure what your question is... are you sure you understand HDTV economics? I mean, I'm no expert and I'm not trying to start a fight - just stating my opinion.

i think its unreasonable to expect a 30% price drop to happen in less than a year.you said it just happened now - that sounds about right, to me. I'd expect about a $500 drop in high-end tvs from year to yearalso,
11/26/2007 1:34:07 PM
6 month time frame? yeah i can tell you with near 100% certainty that it will be cheaper come august.... i doubt the floor will fall out on the prices, though it may be harder to find that particular model 6 months down the line.$1200 ---> $700 is nearly 50% off, if you seriously thought this was going to happen you must have been smoking something special....normal price drops due to newer models, short of something revolutionary like OLED screens that can be huge and cheaper per inch, are around $50 bimonthly or so until it hits near the floor of around 1000, then the price drop slows considerably.... LED backlit LCD's are a solid step forward but not currently huge enough to cause the near 50% reduction in price that you seem to be looking for.entirely depending on the cost of white LED's the price of the LED backlit models should drop quite a bit if they spread that feature across their range of models... i'd think more than $1000 in year, but not by much, probably from 4500 to 3000 for BF specials next year (depending on size)still nothing like the 50% drop you'd likeotherwise i agree with sol[Edited on November 26, 2007 at 3:53 PM. yea you're probably right - i'm kind of basing my estimates off of the last HDTV I bought 3 years ago, which has dropped about 500 a year since then. The difference is that 3 years ago those were early-adopter prices

okay, clearly I am wrong... but can you all tell me why? What is it about those models that make it so much, clearly, better?also, where is a link to get that TV for $1500?[Edited on November 27, 2007 at 4:06 PM. Reason : seems more expensive]

well, check out the cnet editor ratings on the two tvs. i haven't checked, btw, so i could be setting myself up for a painful pwn.

I had my mom pick up a 42" LCD Vizio 720p for my dad...maybe a 1080p, since there was some issue picking it up or getting it delivered. For the most part Vizio has gotten good reviews and the price was great. I think they have a really good dead pixel policy as well.

i love my samsung plasma and sharp lcd for what it's worth. my stepdad has a westinghouse and both of my tvs kill that picture.http://tinyurl.com/25a6a4 has a great picture - 50" 720phttp://tinyurl.com/yqjj4w is the 42" 720pthe differences between 720p and 1080p are unnoticeable to me unless i'm standing about a foot away.

get the bello wavs-325 if you want a good looking cabinet/stand. i love that thing.http://www.bello.com/index.php?partition=show_product&prod_id=179&categ_id=47i don't really use it as a stand, but you get the point.

the samsung LN-T4665F has:better contrast (by a lot)1 more HDMI portdvid over hdmi 1:1 mapping (i think)1 more s-video (lame i know but still)brighter (10% 550 - 500)uses less power (265 - 280)lighter (61 - 120+)USB the vizio has:--the samsung gives up a inch, costs a little more but you get a better overall picture, hurts your wallet less in power, weighs less, more inputs, side inputs (1 hdmi, 1 svideo, 1 composite)[Edited on November 28, 2007 at 2:02 PM.
