http://cggazette.com/absolutenm/templates/indextemp.aspx?articleid=3356&zoneid=1O'Brien's Pack look for another upset vs. UMBy CHENG SIOThrough eight games last season, North Carolina State was 3-5. Through eight games this year, the Wolfpack are also 3-5. See any notable differences?Didn’t think so.On the surface, it seems as though North Carolina State is just a mediocre program, and it very well may be. But underneath the surface, it could be a program that’s not too far away from getting back to its glory days. If that’s truly going to be the case, the man Wolfpack fans may have to thank could very well be their new head coach, Tom O’Brien.N.C. State fired former head coach Chuck Amato last November after Amato finished with a losing record for the second time in three seasons.Less that two weeks later, O’Brien jumped ship from Boston College – currently ranked No. 2 in the country – to Raleigh because of the Wolfpack’s boisterous fan base, upgraded facilities and potential.O’Brien has had little success…yet. But if you listen to Wolfpack senior defensive tackle DeMario Pressley, winning may not be too far away.“They both have very different coaching styles,” Pressley said. “Coach Amato, he’s more like vocal, and he had a certain fire and flash. Coach O’Brien has a lot of poise, and he demands your attention.”Pressley adds that with O’Brien, “You don’t wanna let him down.”If you’re wondering if Pressley has a grudge with Amato, he doesn’t. He loves the guy. Heck, Amato recruited him.Pressley says one of the main reasons why he decided to go to State was the family atmosphere that Amato created. But with O’Brien, Pressley says that it’s “a very organized and really tight ship” that is steering the Wolfpack football program. When you look at the history of Amato and O’Brien, you would see two different slopes in their head coaching career.Amato, like the flashy guy Pressley said he is, started out with four consecutive winning seasons thanks to the play of record-setting quarterback Philip Rivers. After Rivers left is when Amato began his decline to unemployment.O’Brien, on the other hand, went 4-7 in each of his first two seasons at Boston College after inheriting a 5-7 team. Even with the losing, O’Brien built up the talent base with guys such as current NFL players Chris Hovan (DT), Mathias Kiwanuka (DE/LB) and Dan Koppen (C), and with current Eagles like Matt Ryan (QB) and DeJuan Tribble (CB).By his third season at Boston College, O’Brien had a winning season as he went 8-4. Ever since then, O’Brien has collected seven more winning seasons in a row although that may come to an end this year.So what’s his secret? Pressley has some ideas. The first theory is that when things go bad, Pressley says that O’Brien would be calm about it and assure the team that things will be fine. The second theory has to do with how O’Brien views winning.“He’ll let you know you did a great job, but he’ll also tell you don’t dwell on it,” Pressley said. “He points out the good and the bad. Win or lose, he’ll critique on what you have to do to be better next time.”And then of course, there’s the theory that everyone has on O’Brien: his authoritarian/military style. After all, O’Brien was once an assistant coach at Navy.“I don’t see a dictator,” Pressley stated. “I used to be scared of him, but not as much now. His silence, determination and poise can be intimidating.”That silence, determination and poise may be the ingredients needed to bring North Carolina State back to the top.A win at Miami would be a step in that direction.

I bet it would be pretty easy to write a script to generate pre-game sports articles. Shit is fucking formulaic as hell.

The ibis is the first bird to leave before a hurricane and the first one to return after a hurricane. I had to ask that when Miami came to Knoxville several years back.

Talking to some of my friends here at Miami... they are worried. This game concerns Miami a lot. Especially after last week's win over UVa and the fact that NC State has a "nothing to lose" mentality with a good coach.Saw Robert Randolph and Talib Kweli tonight for a free show at UM.
