none of the other binary search options work nearly as well, since UNS queue's straight from their own servers.

Is Newzbin a program also, or just a binary website search? (I just saw the website). The thing I like about NewsLeecher is that (with the help of Mr. Nachó), it takes care of everything automatically: searching, selecting, downloading, error correcting, extracting, and cleanup. That's just sexy. The search has been pretty good so far I think - how is Newzbin better?
11/2/2007 6:27:56 AM
newzbin is driven by the community and is NOT a program... it's a website. people upload nzb's there (similar to torrent files) of stuff that's already on usenet that you could search/browse yourself. it just makes it easier to view what's actually out there.

newzbin premium credit is like 2 bucks/month, so i usually just find myself topping-up when it comes time, rather than weening myself off and using supersearch exclusively.pretty much just displays the information in a more organized fashion ie. hovering over .nfos to read them as well as comments and getting alerts/emails when something is posted matching your search string.i started using newzbin when i refused to pay for newsleecher. warez versions either didn't support supersearch, or it died about a week after the version was released.[Edited on November 2, 2007 at 7:14 AM. ^ooh i didn't know about the smart download thing. So you just select a rar and do control s, and spacebar and it does the rest?

if you are looking for a good free newsgroup server (not for files) usefreenews.netfront.netport 119in your email client (outlook or thunderbird)
11/3/2007 9:26:22 PM
what do people use on the mac as a client? I was using IGrabNews but it died with the leopard install (and doesn't appear to have active development). I have tried NZBDrop (meh) and Unison (seems ok) but was curious if anyone had any other suggestions.

Newzbin opened their registrations, so I got an account, but you can't buy any premium credits due to "technical" problems
11/30/2007 9:22:35 PM
Hey Joe, is Newzbin better than supersearch?
11/30/2007 11:02:00 PM
I haven't had an opportunity to try it. I want to charge my account up to premium status before I give it a whirl. Every "good" feature I try to access on the site is blocked for free members. I'll report back when I get it.]

OK, they got the credit card system problems fixed, so I was able to charge up my account. For the really large downloads (>100 files) I've found that the SuperSearch doesn't always have the smartest "SmartSelect" and will only select part of the files. Because all of the NewzBin items are added by hand, you have a better chance of getting the entire archive without needing to do some advanced filtering and stuff.Another thing I like about NB is that it simplifies your search results. SuperSearch will show you individual files in the results, whereas in NB it shows you the top level archive, with an option to download it immediately (in the form of a NZB file) or you can click on it and see the same files that SS shows you from the beginning.I took a couple of screenshots to show my comparison. I searched "the sopranos dvd" just for the hell of it and because it was broken up into a bunch of files. (PS, Season 1 is on Comcast's OnDemand and in HD ) In NewsLeecher with SuperSearch, here's what it showed me before and after a SmartSelect. Notice that it grabbed 180 items totaling 6.2 GB, but that there are only 97 items in the archive on a single layer DVD at 4.7 GB.In NewzBin, I found the same item quite easily without having to sort through cryptic search results. I can easily click on the green arrow next to the listing and download all files in the archive, or I can click on it to get more information. In the detailed view, all of the files are there and are in sequential order. For large archives like this, I

Hmm... that does look pretty neat. I'll probably stick with Supersearch just because it's what I'm used to and the cryptic search results don't bother me. But that does look easier.
12/2/2007 1:39:14 PM
heh, once you go with NB you'll be hooked. I tried not re-upping my premium credits, but after a year of having all of that info I lasted about 2 days trying to just use supersearch. Imo, it's well worth the couple bucks every few weeks.you can also search Usenet(Raw) and Usenet(Condensed) so it's pretty much like supersearch in that respect as well.[Edited on December 2, 2007 at 2:00 PM. I was just about to reactivate my newshosting account but 13/mo seems nicer. newsgroups are very nice for getting 360 games and hd movies. it's nice having a constant 1mb/s download instead of maybe 500k/s on a torrent.
12/2/2007 5:35:12 PM
Plus, I don't see how anybody feels safe downloading pirated things over torrents these days. I think that's just asking to get in trouble. Maybe I am being naive, but I really do think that getting caught downloading something over usenet is next to impossible to track. At the very least you're a) not uploading anything and b) not "out there" connecting to 100s of other people and broadcasting to the entire world what you're downloading. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I never understood how torrents became so popular when newsgroups are superior to them in almost every single way. At least, all the ways that count to me.
12/2/2007 5:45:32 PM
So does one get started with newsgroups. ?
12/2/2007 9:26:46 PM
sigh..blatant pirating
12/2/2007 9:37:19 PM
But the alternative is to pay for stuff, and that's just silly.
