they already had the right guy: Mack Brown

their boosters had the opportunity to keep the right guy for the job, the guy that kept them ranked every year, and they didn't pony up the cash when they had to. what makes you think they'll do it this time?

i know none of you would notice, or maybe you have and are ignoring it, but fan support has been 1000% better since butch was hired, and he's gotten or will get just about everything he's asked for as far as bettering the program is concerned. this rumor was just started by some guy who thought the situation was plausible and its grown into a full fledged clusterfuck of morons repeating the same rumor every day as if its some new development.

^ and thats not correct, he was offered the same amount to stay as what texas offered. the specific reasons are still argued about

3.2 mil for how many years, that doesn't sound like a whole heck of a lot of money for an SEC coach or getting a man to leave a job he had just taken and was enthusiastic about

“The past week or so, that’s been pretty heavy. People are commenting, ‘Are you going to come back to Arkansas when he comes back?’ And I’m like, ‘It’s not a done deal yet. I think he’s really happy here and we have something special going here.’”

On if he understands why Davis may be interested in going to Arkansas:
“Oh, I can definitely see why. It’s his hometown. His dad still lives around there – I know his dad real well. He’s got family and friends there, so I can definitely see why he’d do it. Like I said, we’ve got a good recruiting class and we have a good one probably coming in. We have very talented players here, so I think the future is bright.” "

Mack was pretty upset about the whole thing, UT ponied up some big cash and only at the eleventh hour did UNC actually think Mack was serious (as he was flying first class to Austin to close on a house). Also, having terrible attendance on senior day against a rival (when you trail 14-0 to start) when you're a top ten one loss team is what broke Brokeback U's back, were you not a Ewe-N-C fan pre 2000?

I'd expect the Butch Davis saga to kill recruiting, especially in state recruiting. I'd hope we could land one or two of the guys leaning towards UNC now, also expect to see South Carolina snag one or two. Now couple that with the fact that Davis hasn't released anything publicly to say he is staying and a recruiting disaster is in the works, and your chancellor is leaving and your AD cares little about football. Yes, these rumors to Davis are probably annoying, and they might be unwarranted, but recruits don't have the luxury of knowing one way or the other, so if Davis is staying, he needs to state it, otherwise the rumors will be in overdrive until the end of Chapel Hole's season.

uh, you quoted me then repeated pretty much the same thing. i didn't mention the dook game because thats just speculative and it would be pretty naive to say he left because of that one game. as for everything else, i agree he needs to say something definitive, but for all i know he's telling recruits he'll be there for sure. it just makes absolutely zero sense he would leave his cush nfl job for a mess of a program, then turn around and leave for another mess of a program that he could've easily had just by waiting a year

but hey i'm preaching to a bunch of devil's advocates

I'll let you in on a secret, he makes 2M at UNC/year, sitting on his duff from the NFL doesn't pay this much, so.....

Another thing to consider is that if they were to keep Davis and match Arkansas offer of 3.2 million a year, what is that going to tell Roy Williams who has already won a title for them? They will at least have to match both Williams with Davis in terms of contract agreements as well as raise the whole staff and every other coach over at UNC and I really don't see Dick Baddour wanting to do that.

As for UNC killing recruitment of this area, you have obviously not seen where we have both the #1 offensive and defensive player in the state coming here (Brandon Barnes, Terrell Manning). O'Brien doesn't need great players to win football games because while at Boston College he only had 1 five star player and that was Brian Toal. I think that before you praise UNC recruiting you should take a look at what I found:

"Clemson has an academic review board that prospects' transcripts must go through in order to continue to be recruited by the football staff.

This board turned down the following players among others:

JoJo Cox-unsigned
Dwight Jones-North Carolina
Tydreke Powell-North Carolina
Ryan Houston-North Carolina
Brandon Paul-Florida State
Weslye Saunders-South Carolina
Olufemi Ajiboye-South Carolina
Jarius Wynn-Georgia"

and here is the link

Or maybe he's keeping his options wide open and saw the chaos caused by Saban, Davis knows recruiting very well. If he is 100% staying, he would say it, and would be telling this to recruits. One recruit in an article down in Ark. stated that Butch to Ark. wasn't a done deal, I didn't even know it was a probable, point is, lots of confusion out there, at least for one recruit, and likely a boatload more.

Quote :
"no but it pays enough, and i really can't see his wife being happy moving them to chapel hill only to move a year later to arkansas"

I'm not sure how much Cleveland is paying him, but is it close to 2M??? Also, Davis's father lives in Arkansas, case closed on the family card for UNC. Wives of coaches know the deal, if they didn't, they'd get it after the first 3 or 4 moves, by the time a guy reaches head coach status, they've probably moved 5-10 times in 15 years. Also, I realize this may cause you to have a stroke, but Chapel Hill is not heaven to everyone, it's not the end all be all for greatness among real estate.

As I mentioned earlier, this is a money issue, all the intangibles are with Arkansas, hands down, if the money is there at 3M a year, plan a going away party, if not, you might hang onto him. But just one quick question, if UNC were to magically match Arkansas offer of 3M and Butch miraculously decided to stay, what would ol Roy and his staff think about Butch and his staff making more than his nationally known product with great tradition??? Baddour's head could explode.

^ I think it's cool, as long as the coach's current school is aware of what's going on. Fowler knew Sendek was talking w/ ASU weeks before the news broke that he would be leaving. And for once, dumbass Fowler did a good job by not trying to fight to keep him. Guess miracles do happen.

i believe that it's considered professional courtesy to ask the AD's permission to do so, but that's only a courtesy. you don't have to have any sort of permission.

i could be wrong on this.

well most pro leagues (i think) require permission from the organization before other teams can contact someone on their staff

i'm sure there's something similar in the ncaa

i would think that if such things exist, it'd be a conference rule, not an entire ncaa rule.

again, could be wrong.

^^there is no rule or regulation regarding schools contacting currently employed coaches, but the rule of thumb is that if school A's Athletics Director doesn't ask permission to talk to school B's coach then in the future other ADs will not ask school A's Athletics Director for permission to talk to their coaches

The courtesy thing of contacting a school's AD for permission to talk really wouldn't need to happen until very late in the search. These days schools try to avoid directly talking to the coach until they know what the answer is, using back channels with intermediaries instead.

Now these days people will go after anybody they want to and do whatever they please. If Butch wants to leave then let him leave but I really do wonder who UNC will pull in if he does leave. The top replacements for Butch I believe would be:

Phil Fulmer - Head Coach Tennessee (if he gets fired)
Bud Foster - DC Virginia Tech (he showed a lot of interest in NCSU when we were looking)
Jimbo Fisher - OC Florida State (this guy is dying to be a head coach somewhere)
Will Muschamp - DC Auburn (rumors that if Fisher came here that he would come along)

These are just a few names that I am throwing out but I think that they are pretty legit.

Arkansas is going to move to the Big 12 soon, so the SEC is too tough argument doesn't have any weight behind it. Missouri will move to the Big 10 making it the Big 12b so that the Big 10 TV Network will have another major metro area to be on (St. Louis) and they can have a conference title game. Arkansas will replace Missouri to rejoin their old SWC rivals. Who replaces Arkansas in the SEC is anyones guess.
