i guess the fires are further from downtown san diego than before -- mainly because they're to the north (witch fire) and south (harris fire) whereas the cedar fire was in line with central SD

but what seems crazier this time is how far west the witch fire has already come -- evacuations in del mar and solana beach -- it might burn all the way to the ocean (and things are certainly much more populated the further west it goes), if it ever jumps the 5, holy shit

also, things escalated so quickly this time -- there's still santa anas expected until late tomorrow at the earliest

just got another email from marye anne -- ucsd is closed tomorrow too

Just making a small point...just cause a fire appeared to be started in different places doesn't mean it was an intentional set.
With winds like the Santa Anas it could easily have been multiple spots from the original fire.
In southeast georgia this summer the fire spotted as far as 3/4 mile. With intense fire you can watch burning sticks and leaves being picked up and thrown by the convection column. One of our air tanker pilots said he's seen flaming 12 inch logs 500 feet off the ground when he passed through a smoke column while making water drops. Add in adverse wind profiles and you can get spotting 90° from the direction of the wind.

I'm not saying it wasn't arson, I'm just saying people sometimes misinterpret info, even in the firefighting community. We had all sorts of reports about people setting new fires in Robeson County. When I got there it looked like the real reason is we weren't mopping up well and the old fires kept reburning and spotting over our lines.

Now, if all the new starts were right next to the road or easily accessible ares then it's pretty suspicious...

I've heard many horror stories about the Florida fires in 1998. There were two fires running along side each other that didn't stop until they hit the Atlantic.
My boss said they tried to make a stand at I-95. He was watching the fire coming towards I-95 and turned around only to see small smoke columns coming off of houses on the other side

^^I'm not making assumptions, that's what the authorities said. They were quick in making the claim that it was arson which leads me to believe it was an obvious arson and I believe the fact that it started in 3 seperate areas (all intentional) just cements the claim. I've lived here all my life and have dealt with plenty of fires and santa ana winds to know what I'm talking about.

more than one fire.....some caused by downed power lines, some arson...but the majority of them are because there are the santa ana's which are hot, dry, winds and they blow embers which start new fires.

^^^yup...so not Universal City, but closeish. That yellow is horrible...and I've never watched the Hallmark channel but they always have bilboards up right in front of their office of upcoming shows and they usually star people like Valerie Bertanelli or Jennifer Love Hewitt

The Rancho Bernardo area became the primary focus for the fire fighters. The mountain burned down. Fortunately, the fire did not cross the street and all the homes in our neighborhood are intact. There were a number of homes in the northern part of the 4S area that were not as lucky and were consumed by the fire. I believe there were a good number of homes in Rancho Bernardo that were also destroyed. The news is reporting a total of 600 homes but I believe this is the combined San Diego count. We made our way to a friend's house in Solana Beach - west of I-5, considered a safe place. Normally, this is a 30 minute trip. It took us over 4 hours. The area was covered in a layer of smoke. This brings to light the incredibly dynamic nature of the San Diego fires. On Sunday night there were two small fires approximately 40 miles away. By the morning, the number of fires increased to about 6 and right in our neighborhood. We are trying to keep an eye on the developing issues by watching the news. I'm hoping that an announcement will be made stating it is safe to return home. I'll keep you posted on our situation. "

got some power issues arising in addition to the fires themselves

several transmission lines are down, and the major ones coming down from san onofre are threatened by the fire at camp pendleton -- sdg&e sounds very concerned
