"there's a common misconception that it's really difficult to get enough protein on a vegetarian diet. The truth is that most Americans eat WAY more protein than you really need if you're not a bodybuilder. Beans, whole grains, dark green vegetables, peanuts, and most fruits are all good plant sources of protein. Not to mention eggs and dairy for the non-vegans."

it's a common misconception that the FDA guidelines for protein intake are sufficient for non-sedentary individuals. Also, I'd like to know what fruits you are getting protein from and which vegetables you think have a good source of protein. beans, rice, and corn have incomplete protein makeups and must be used in conjunction with other foods in order for your body to even be able to process their protein content.

[Edited on October 18, 2007 at 6:02 PM. Reason : getting your protein from peanuts will have you eating way too many calories daily]

its really easy to be an unhealthy vegetarian. i would know. be careful not to just eat pasta and dairy all the time. just do some research and its actually really easy to find all kinds of healthy alternative meals. i've been a vegetarian for about 3 years now and i have no desire to go back to eating meat, except for maybe fish. it just doesn't appeal to me.
if you're really serious about going vegetarian, or just want to try a few meals check out these cookbooks:
Vegetarian Meat and Potatoes
Student's Vegetarian Handbook (really cheap, good meals)
The Grit Cookbook
You can still eat meat and be healthy, just choose the right kinds of meat to eat. And you don't have to be a vegetarian to eat vegetarian meals occasionally.

thank you!! i hate always defending myself against people (especially those trying to act like my friend)- what the hell does my not eating meat have to do with anybody else's diet?? im not making them eat my tofu, they shouldnt try making me eat meat

Quote :

this actually is not entirely true. soybeans, and something else (cant remember what food it was at the moment) have the complete protein makeup you are referring to and need nothing else. Other foods lack very little of what our body needs, and only need to be combined with a small amount of something else. there is no reason to eat excess amts to get all the nutrients needed- the vegetarians that do that are just ignorant of how to have a proper veg-based diet.

-found the things that are complete in the protein respect: soy, hempseed, amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa.

iron supplements are easily available, and some multivitamins include it (but you have to check). ive been taking those for years anyway due to anemia. but iron-deficient anemia isnt very common in vegans/vegetarians.

most of these concerns are addressed on vegetarian sites and in books. if ya dont care to read that much- check out wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vegetarianism

^^^ yeah, i've been taking multi-vitamins too to deal with low iron levels. didn't know if there was anything else you would have recommended.

you could try fortified cereal, they have lots of iron

one serving of Bran Flakes has 100% of your daily value for iron

iron from vegetarian sources aren't readily absorbed by the body, so you have to take a lot more than the daily recommended amounts. certain vitamins aid in the absorbtion of iron, so read up on that. I think I remember vitamin C and B6 helping with iron intake.

[Edited on October 18, 2007 at 6:32 PM. Reason : ^100% of a fortified cereal doesn't mean your body will absorb anywhere close to that amount]

^^^^increasing intake of vitamin c (to help absorb the iron) and eating more legumes and grains. also, gluten free diets sometimes help with iron-deficiency

note: spinach actually isnt a good source of iron- it has some, but not a lot. and it can sometimes inhibit absorption

I didn't mean that any of those are a good single source to get ALL your protein. But eating a variety of foods from that list (especially beans) will be plenty.

And I've read that protein combining isn't really necessary. I know wikipeidia isn't the best source, but here you go.

I've read some crackpot assumptions about how you can get away with little to no protein intake before, but that wikipedia article takes the cake.

(thanks nerdchick)

Most people are unfortunately raised (often by religious types) to believe

that there is only ONE correct or best way for everything in life.

therefore, everything else is somehow wrong and must be opposed (bigotry)

it's truly sad how many people have this worldview

especially living in a multicultural and morally-relative society such as ours

Quote :
"And you don't have to be a vegetarian to eat vegetarian meals occasionally."

exactly

and you don't have to NOT be a vegetarian to eat non-vegetarian meals occasionally.

the attitude that vegetarians must NEVER eat meat, and non-vegetarians must ALWAYS include meat

are just further evidence that vegetarian intolerance is simply bigotry:

HEY! VEGETARIANS ARE X. NON-VEGETARIANS ARE Y. NOW WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?!!!1

Quote :
"beans, rice, and corn have incomplete protein makeups and must be used in conjunction with other foods"

OH NOES! THAT'S WAY TOO HARD!!!

I ONLY EAT MEALS THAT ARE COMPOSED OF ONE INGREDIENT!!!

not to mention:
Quote :
"this actually is not entirely true. soybeans, and something else (cant remember what food it was at the moment) have the complete protein makeup you are referring to and need nothing else"

(hemp seed)

Quote :
"So are you vegetarians supplementing your omega 3's a shit ton?"

fresh hemp seed
Quote :
"Hemp oil contains 57% linoleic (LA) and 19% linolenic (LNA) acids, in the three-to-one ratio that matches our nutritional needs........The best sources are oils from freshly ground grains and whole seeds, but EFAs are fragile and quickly lost in processing.......it's better to get your essential fatty acids in foods, and I worry about toxic contaminants in fish oil supplements...........Hemp oil contains more EFAs than flax and actually tastes good........Unlike flax oil, hemp oil also provides 1.7% gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)......."
Therapeutic Hemp Oil by Andrew Weil, M.D.

I didn't eat red meat for over 15 years

(red meat means meat from mammals, not that the actual color of the meat is red, like salmon)

that decision earns more bigoted remarks than any other vegetarian-related diet

even vegans get less shit talked about them than non-"red-meat-eaters"

before I explain my reasons, let's hear some bigotry about it! (I know some of you can't resist)

squirrel meat = tastes good
racoon meat = tastes good
opossum meat = tastes good but a bit stringy/greasy, but that could have the way it was cooked.

I call bullshit on that. If any meat tates good then eat it without all the seasoning and other shit you put on it, in fact, eat it raw. This is how carnivores do it.

yeah, I never understood the hate towards vegetarians. Meat eaters seem to take it so personal. I'm a meat eater, although I do eat mainly turkey, chicken and fish, but I have no problems with vegetarians whatsoever. More power to em

vegetarian food is often delicious

I'm omnivorous but I don't eat tons of meat

however, if you go a long time without eating beef when you finally do you'll get the diarrhea

your thinking is counterintuitive.

sensible vegetarians would get ample amounts of omega 3s in their diet. it is the "meatatarians" who should be supplementing, unless they eat adequate amounts of oily fish.

but unless one eats oily fish 2-3 times a week, no matter what one's eating mode is, one is advised to supplement one's diet with fish oil. plant sources of omega 3 FAs contain LA and ALA, which have to be converted into DHA (the kind found in fish). and typically the ratio of conversion is 10:1, so you would have to get a lot of plant omega 3s to convert to enough DHA, which is what your brain needs. and i believe EPA can't be made from LA/ALA, so it has to be gotten from fish.

not true- i am a vegan and one of my closest friends is a non-red-meat-eater, and she gives me shit ALL THE TIME about how my choice of diet is unhealthy (despite the fact that i eat much healthier food than her, and most people i know). in fact, i have yet to hear anybody give her crap about not eating red-meat. when we are in a group and the topic comes up- being a vegan is always the "taboo", not the red meat issue

most vegans look like death warmed over yet claim that they are healthier than everyone else. I've only met a couple of vegans who looked remotely healthy, and one of them supplemented his diet heavily in order to keep it balanced.

ex vegetarian here. i had a long time in the service, about 8 years, a good 3 totally vegan. it's definitely a culture of guilt, which i now resent.

now i like to eat raw red meat. maybe sear the outsides so nobody watching throws up, but tatare is pretty good. i have also taken it upon myself to try horsemeat. i gotta say, those beautiful animals are totally DELICIOUS.

my heath was better in some respects, but i couldnt' get enough iron without supplements. also, i believe one good reason to eat meat is that cows do the farting for you. its not fun to have 5 liters of farts a day like one of my vegan friends did (he had a fart study, haha).

the biggest issue is that if you let yourself care about one injustice in the world, you are suddenly weighted down by a whole lot more of them. my body may have been in slightly better shape but i felt dour and morose constantly and harbored dislike for nearly everyone i met, because they're all fuckups. most of the similar people i knew had some sort of mental issue too, be it depression or misanthropy. so what if you're vegan and better than everybody else, whoopty fuck, you're totally miserable too.
