i was in an 800 class when the first plane hit, someone must've pulled the fire alarm to "evacuate" everyone from the building because one went off, and we all went outside, then the moms called me and so i walked to the nearest big tv's i could think of (left right wings) and watched the second plane hit live, watched a while longer, and then went back to my apt to watch tv the rest of the day

I was in the atrium, eating breakfast before a history exam my freshman year. That was back when they played some college channel, and I remember it cutting to CNN coverage. Everyone started joking around, thinking a small plane hit the building, but then the second one hit and the whole atrium got quiet. It was the eeriest feeling in the world, and I still get chills everytime I think about it.

I was in back to back classes all morning at NCSU...I remember being in Chemistry and there was a fire drill (about the time the planes hit), and I remember seeing alot of people talking on their cell phones, and a few people crying, then when I got to my next class in Harrleson, some people behind me were talking about it, and they told me that some planes had hit the Twin Towers, then after that class (this was ~11am) I went straight to the computer lab and watched the whole thing on the computer, both of the towers had fallen by this time I think...They were saying at that time there were an estimated 10,000 people dead...I will never forget that overwhelming moment of shock.

So essentially it was from some random guys in my math class...

I remembered some other stuff from my day at highschool. We were in math class and watched the TV, I think we still went over material. The conversations at lunch were crazy, people saying they were more than willing to enlist and go kick some ass. The principal came over the announcer and said a prayer and had a moment of silence for the event too.

For going home I lived on base and I don't think personal vehicles were allowed to come on base (Alert level Delta if I remember correctly) so my Dad had to come to the front gate and have me walk through...got patted down to walk in. Traffic was intense.

I was at the beach.

My mom called me telling me she had talked to my dad and he was okay and when he got home they would call me back.

So I spent the rest of the day watching tv, waiting for my parents to call.

I was a junior in high school going to pre-cal. The class was vaugely abuzz as Dr. Lutz was late. Dr. Lutz had no reason to be late, really- her office was two doors away. She dashed in, ten minutes behind schedule (right after 9 am) and hurriedly said something to the effect of "...plane just crashed into the World Trade Center..." and ran back out. She then canceled class. I walked by the teacher's office, which had a TV, and realized that it was true. We spent the rest of the day on hall watching TV except for the school-wide assembly where they decided to play the footage on the SUPER HUGE screen in the auditorium.

I remember that thread. I think it was the first time I ever posted on TWW. (well, either in that thread or another similar thread.)

Was between classes in highschool, somehow, the class I was in hadn't heard the news, as myself and a friend were walking between classes, another friend ran up to us and said that two planes had crashed into the twin towers and another had blown up the pentagon and then just ran off. My friend and I looked at each other for about 30 seconds before we agreed that we had just been had and went about our business. Then they actualy made the announcement over the PA system. I had most of that day off and spent it outside chatting with other students about everything. I remember it being so wierd that there were no planes overhead (of course) and how clear and blue the sky was. It was such a beautiful day for such a tragic event. It didn't even occur to me until I got home that day that my father had been on his way into NYC. He was sitting at home, just watching everything on TV, had he left an hour earlier that day he would have been driving right through when the planes hit. The whole thing was very sureal

^funny that you mention that, it does seem like there were so many stories of people who should have been there but weren't for one reason or another. I knew a guy who was supposed to start an internship that day in an office on (IIRC) the 86th floor of one of the towers. His boss called his cell on the way in and asked him to pick up some coffee and bagels. He was standing just outside when the first plane hit...had he not gotten that call, he probably would have been dead.

I was drunk from lunch, just getting back to class, and this big mouth chick met our car in the lot and started yammering about some planes. And I blew it off.

When I made it to art around noonish, we watched the news and it set in. I sobered up right quick.

I was a freshman in college sleeping in cause i only had Scholars Forum that day...roommate's friend calls, wakes me up,
tells me to turn on the TV and says "it's the end of the world!"

i was like, wtf as I saw the 2nd plane hit live, then wandered down the hall to another suite and one dude who had been
in the shower dropped his towel in surprise as he saw the footage.

We were glued to CNN till I left to go wafting on the Eno, that was surreal.

2nd sophomore year, Green Hope High School, people clamoring about it in between 2nd and 3rd periods in the hall. My Latin teacher turned on the TV and couldn't teach class. All we did was watch the news.

Some people were worried that the Jackson 5 had died because they had just had their reunion.

I skipped class that morning (nothing unusual) and my girlfriend called me from class and told me to turn on the news. I immediatly woke up my roommate and we sat glued to the couch for hours. I remember seeing the second plane crash and then as the buildings started to collapse my roommate says, did you just see something fall? 30 secnods later the building collapsed. I had to go to class at 11 because I had an astronomy test. The professor was out and the TA was administring the test. We all told her what had happened and she thought we were kidding! We had to get her to call the professor before she would cancel the test.

What a crazy day, one we will all never forget.

Was in social studies class, one of the other teachers had just got off the phone and ran in telling our teacher to turn on the TV. One of the towers was smoking and the second had not yet been hit.

I was a junior in high school and in second period astronomy class. I remember my then boyfriend's mom (she was a teacher) running in my class and hugging me and crying but not saying anything. She was a ditz, so I passed it off as nothing. Before she could explain, another teacher walked in and told us a plane had hit the WTC. We spent the rest of the day watching TV except in my honors english class. My teacher in that class said that we weren't going to let terrorists interfere with our education, so we muted the TV and had class. Our principal was really torn up about it because his brother worked at the WTC. However, he had taken a vacation with his family to Disney World, but had been scheduled to go back to work that day. His flight had been cancelled the day before, so he was in Florida when the planes hit. I also remember all the rumors about other planes, including one heading for NC and all that.

i wonder how many stories there are of people who shouldn't have been there that morning, that day, or ever -- but some fluke event caused them to go there then.

I bet you dont hear about those stories nearly as much

i was asleep. TKE-Teg walked into my room and said something like "DUDE, AN AIRPLANE JUST CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER."

i'm half asleep and am thinking he means a light civil aircraft, like a Cessna or something. I'm like "That sucks" and went back to sleep.

Then I got up a little later and turned on the TV...

I was in HS social studies class
we watched it on the the TV in the classroom

my teacher sent me to the adjoining library to hit the internet to see what else I could find out and to see if there was any particular relevance for the attacks being perpetrated on that particular date

self-deprecating humor is tricky. you see, it's only really effective when the action or trait you are making fun of is obviously NOT indicative of your present state. kind of like pointing out an absurd difference between perception and reality.

in other words, for you to use self-deprecating humor to poke fun at yourself for being tragically ill-informed and ignorant in the past, just kind of falls flat when one considers that your normal posts on a daily basis aren't much different.

you know, I'm just sayin'

I was on my destroyer in port Norfolk, VA. We were conducting a general quarters drill and I was up on the bridge as the Officer of the Deck for the drill. The commanding officer came across our PA system and told us a plane had crashed into the WTC. We stood down from the drill and went to the wardroom to watch the news on CNN.

I think it was after the second plane hit that we got the flash message to set general quarters for real. I was the ordnance officer, so I sprinted down to the armory to start issuing weapons and ammunition. We got our patrol boats in the water, set up armed rovers on the deck and built machine gun nests on the end of the pier. The entire base went on lockdown and stayed locked down for the next two days. Half a dozen ships sortied out to patrol off the coast, up by Washington DC and NYC.

Needless to say, life in the military was never the same after that.

I was in my 10th grade English class and our principal made an announcement that two planes had run into the Twin Towers...the way she had put it made it seem like an accident and I remember wondering who someone couldn't see those tall buildings...the next period I realized it wasn't an accident.

I was a sophomore in college and sleeping like the dead because I had been up late the night before. My roommate woke me up on her way to class to tell me that she didn't want me to be shocked when I woke up, but that a plane had hit the WTC. It didn't register at first and I laid there for 10-15 minutes after she left the room. But I got up, turned on the news, and spent the rest of the day in my PJs with my suitemates in one of our dorm rooms watching the news.

Was in drafting class in high school when the principal came over the PA and announced something about it, but we weren't paying attention cause she was a bitch. Then someone turned on the tv and we watched for a few min. In my next class, my next teacher actually tried to teach us stuff, but all my other classes we just watched the news the whole time.

Heard about it on my way to chemistry sophomore year of high school.

I don't think anyone had a clue how significant it was, even after watching it on tv. Some people were, no joke, celebrating their opportunity to watch tv instead of doing work.

Junior year of high school, some guy came in late and told us that while he was in the office they were watching tv and he found out about it. My second and third period classes were with the same teacher and he was one of the few who had good reception on his tv, so people were coming in and out of the class all day to watch the news.

I actually heard about it in a thread on some message board around the 5th. thought it was just some wacko and blew it off.

then after my first class during usual homeroom announcemnts the principle came on (unusual) and asked us to pray for the people that died in ny today. still i thought nothing of it and nobody had a clue what he was talking about. it was a cat school so we were always praying about random people that died anyway.

then while classes were switching my friend who was probably the least credible guy and biggest joke back then was like omg omg we're under attack the pentagon blew up and the white house is on fire and he ran away

i asked somebody else what happened and he was like "yassa arafat and them done bombed us"

so i went to class and the teacher told us about it and then taught geometry with an ironfist. woulndt let us leave even though we begged her to watch. i thought it was a regular plane as well but she clarified and i asked did the building fall over and everybody laughed at me and said no like "omg how could a plane make a building fall you silly"

then i watched it in every class after that. saw the 2nd plane hit and both towers fall.

a friend of mine was hysterical and crying the whole day. she was seriously like "i've got family in maryland and from dc thers only virginia and then its nc and theyre gonna come after rtp and we're not far from htere boo hoo i don't wanna die."

Walking across the lawn between classes Junior year of high school, someone ran up and told us two planes had hit the WTC. I remember thinking they were cessnas or the like, and then commenting on how the hell two of them managed to hit the towers.

Got to class, a friend had it up on one of the computers, the the principal came on the PA and we just watched TV all day after that.

Probably the most surreal day of my life, everything broke down. I remember the intersection of Friendly and Holden (big intersection) was on flashy-stoplight mode and there were newspaper kids standing in the middle of the road handing out a special edition page with the news. Felt like the beginning of armageddon.

I was in flight school, doing a cross country from Tuscon to Denver. Phoenix control came on, told us to switch to 121.5 (the emergency frequency) and started to sequence us into a holding pattern to land. I was 23 to land, and when I saw Phoenix International, planes were lined up and down both taxiways. When I got out, I started walking towards the terminal, and that is when I found out everything had happened. Turns out the flight school I was at, Doublle Eagle Aviation was one of the schools a few of the terrorist tried to train at.
