http://www.wral.com/sports/basketball/ncaa/story/2280146/Fells Injured In Sloppy State Win Over N.C. Central By J. Mike BlakePosted: Jan. 9 8:57 p.m. Updated: Today at 12:36 a.m.RALEIGH, N.C. — N.C. State might have been playing the team with the most losses of any Division I school but any positives after the sloppy 54-29 win over North Carolina Central were hard to find. The Wolfpack (11-3), already playing without key reserve Dennis Horner, lost starting shooting guard Courtney Fells to an ankle injury with 4:35 left in the first half.Coach Sidney Lowe confirmed that Fells was on crutches after the game, and the prospects of him playing against North Carolina on Saturday are unknown. Initial X-rays of the ankle were negative. In his place, reserve Trevor Ferguson played 18 minutes and connected on just one of his seven 3-point shots. His problems finding the hoop were shared by the rest of the team. State scored the fewest points of any of the Eagles’ 22 opponents, including Houston Baptist University, Concord University and North Dakota State.Once again, perimeter shooting was the main culprit of another ugly win by the Pack, as State clanked all 10 of its first half 3-point attempts. In the last two games combined, the Pack has hit just 1-of-21 first half 3-pointers.With the top team in the country and archrival up next on the horizon, the Pack knows it must find a better shooting stroke before Saturday.“On the offensive end we just have to hit more open shots and trust each other to hit those shots,” freshman J.J. Hickson said. “If we just hit our shots, everything else will take care of itself.”In the second half, Brandon Costner came out firing and connected on each of his first three shots from behind the arch. He led all scorers with 18.“We had the ball moving quicker and Brandon was able to move faster,” Lowe said. “In the second half when we’re playing offense at our end, we move quicker. I don’t know if it’s because I’m down there calling out to them, but we’re able to move and get into position.”Defensively, State harassed the Eagles players from start to finish. The result was the lowest point total by any of the Pack’s 14 opponents. Lowe praised his team’s efforts as State forced 12 turnovers, and had eight blocks and five steals.“As of yet, defense is our main goal. Coach always stresses defense,” redshirt junior Simon Harris said.Although the Pack may have won its seventh straight game, it will be hard to duplicate holding its next opponent to 20 percent shooting from the field and seven percent from three as it did with the one-win Eagles.North Carolina Central, in its first year of Division I play, now has 21 losses, while the No. 1 Tar Heels still have none.Although his team has struggled shooting in recent games against teams playing zone, Lowe pointed to UNC’s man-to-man defense as reason to expect better results on Saturday.“It’ll be a different game, a different style of game, bigger team – we’ll have to see,” Lowe said. “It’s a new day. Today we didn’t make [our shots]. On Saturday we could make them. But I don’t think we’re going to get 21 three’s against a team playing man-to-man defense.”Lowe said the team would find out on Thursday how Dennis Horner’s left ankle will be good enough to go this weekend. But whether or not the Pack will be without Fells, its fourth-leading scorer, will be determined at a later date.“The way [Fells] was sounding was really positive,” Harris said. “The way he made it sound was he was positive, but you have to stay positive when you’re down. I hope he’s ready and he hopes he’s ready.”

thanksEugene out for the SC game with an ankle
8/26/2008 7:10:28 PM
I blame those stupid threads saying that a big name player from an opponent will miss the game. I know they are in jest but you just don't fuck with the sports gods. They rain hellfire and brimstone on your program. Also our strength and conditioning coach should be let go he isn't working out apparently.
8/26/2008 7:20:47 PM
^You're right. I say we nix the "**** is out with a hammy injury" threads. We are being smited.
8/26/2008 7:50:33 PM
probably one of the most dispiriting stories i've ever read.

Can't believe Curtis isn't even traveling...
8/27/2008 2:03:14 PM
that can't be true... we're only taking 1 RB?
8/27/2008 2:26:56 PM
curtis crouch isn't travelling
8/27/2008 2:32:26 PM
oh, i thought he meant underwood
8/27/2008 2:33:42 PM
from above:
8/27/2008 2:35:26 PM
I hate to see Curtis not travelling for the game, but at the same time, being that TOB said, "Curtis Crouch will not travel this week... and that's my decision," eludes to a discipline issue (just a guess). Although it'll hurt our team, I like to see a no-nonsense coach who will instill some discipline and pay dividens in the future, instead of just putting up big banners and having a team motto of "DISCIPLINE."

^c'mon man, cut me some slack. I was being cautious, knowing that if I'd stated it as "fact" that some a-hole would give me shit for assuming. Oh well, can't win for losin'
8/27/2008 7:32:41 PM
ok, i'm sorry but this is not a normal injury season for any teamby the end of the game tonight we had at least 6 starters out: wilson, morgan, johnson, byers, eugene, bowens
8/28/2008 11:15:32 PM
blame ta he brought the curse to the school
8/29/2008 11:38:00 AM
There is no curse. Lots of injuries happen in sports. We just happen to be NC State fans, so we watch our own injury report while not paying any attention to other programs around the nation.
8/29/2008 11:55:38 PM
^aha. right. every team loses their best receiver. and their best running back. and their best quarterback. and a million other starters.
8/30/2008 1:11:37 AM
^ no... ^^ hes rightit may not be every team but there are a great deal of teams that lose just as many important people as State has.
8/30/2008 1:25:28 AM
^^Even USC lost their starting QB last night after he got hit in the head. You'll see plenty of players get hurt this year on other teams.
8/30/2008 1:29:07 AM
i haven't seen any D1 team take this many hits on injuries, and naming teams that lost one or two doesn't really disprove my feelings about it eitherthis whole thing is just plain ridiculous
8/30/2008 1:39:33 AM
Florida's lost 5 guys just to knee injuriesSyracuse doesnt have any players left
8/30/2008 2:21:53 AM
^The only difference is they probably have some reserves to back them up.
8/30/2008 11:12:34 AM
yup...thats why State's stands out more, much bigger drop off from 1st string to 2nd.Although Syracuse is pretty shitty too
8/30/2008 11:16:04 AM
8/30/2008 11:16:47 AM
it's not just that we dont have the players to back them up, it's also that we lost KEY players everywhere. To lose your starting QB, your best receiver and 2/3 of your running backs will make your offense pretty inept... especially with our starting offensive line
