I am one of the Catholic raised peeps who kinda doesn't believe in the whole religion thing... but it is just easier to tell everyone you are still Catholic. My older bros marred in the girls church so I ever really knew what the rules were. But again, if you are limited on who you can marry... that is a retarded rule to abide by and you should quesion the people who believe in that rule.

As far as us going atheist/agnostic: I think Catholics just tend to be more logical and realize how dumb organized religion is sooner than others

I'm so glad I was able to be part of a church before my mother formed anti-religion views.
My youngest brother was baptized in the Catholic church, and soon after that, she stopped attending church, and then she stopped taking us to sunday school. So yeah, I was raised catholic, and it was great.

bwahaha, that was some funny shit. he seriously got pissed off midway through the night. He started the story with "well I'm a michigan fan because I was out fishing with my uncle one time..."

I just cut him off and told him to stop there. I also started asking if he caught a blue and yellow striped fish that reminded him of a michigan helmet. twas quite the funny

Why would you want to get married in a church that you don't believe in? Any church has restrictions on who you can marry, just go down to the courthouse or in a park like other people do if you don't like it.

haha, I'm gonna have to side with them

wanting to be catholic is just horrible

there are better "social clubs" than that, trust me

Quote :

this scares me from having kids , but is evidence that "atheist churches" may grow and succeed

my parents and sister (and family) still go to [protestant] church, despite my quitting at 13

and they initially tried pretty hard to get me to reconsider

you know,

you always hear about the pacifist hippie child of militant republicans parents

or the the baptist nazi child of atheist multiracial parents

etc.

I will think twice about banning my future children from religion

but not because religion has any value

but that I'll want them to rebel from it and reject it 100% as adults

ya see?

religion is dying

it's just a bunch of leftover traditions and crap

that don't really mean anything except the meaning that's put into them

IOW, god/worship/prayer is absolutely not required for these social clubs to exist

if you ask me, religion continues mostly out of pride (and a lack of a secular alternatives)

people just don't want to admit that they and their parents and their parent's parents etc.

were all a part of a false ideology that believes lies and fairy tales

but they still like going to pot-luck dinners and being in a "club"

you can have faith in God and not have faith in any church, its a matter of believing in what the church teaches. ie: a baptist would not have faith or believe in the catholic church, but clearly believes in God.

so, if church doctrine involved something that you felt was questionable or were uncertain about, would you accept it anyway?

it depends on the situation. ie: i am prochoice. the catholic church is very clearly against abortion, as am I, but i dont see how it is my place to tell other women what they can and cannot do.
I have yet to find a doctrine of the church that i dont agree with on a spiritual level- though in a purely political or social context i may disagree with it.

i went to a catholic school. The majority of people dont care but there are always some crazies. Most of these catholic school kids usually grow out of this and become dedicated people of the church, not insanely dedicated but when you have a family the "church" thing is always a good thing to do.

Its a cycle. Otherwise there wouldnt be any members at all.

and damn, I havent been to mass in over a year. Confession in over 2 years.

the only thing worse then people trying to get you to believe in their religion are the people who try to convince you that religion is a farse.

^yeah, cause you can't have knowledge of something without first-hand experience with it

you guys can get off your circle jerk now

I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, I'm just speaking my mind

so fuck off

you see where I said "I you ask me"?

well no one fucking asked me

I'm just saying what I feel like

If I were trying to convince anyone of anything, do think I would be so preachy about it?

gawd

Wasn't there already a religious discussion thread?

I was raised Catholic, as are my children. I think that religion forms a good basis for moral beliefs. Yes, I know you can have good morals without being christian, or bad morals while being christian, but I think in general, the fundamental teachings of any religion help build on what I do as a parent at home.

That said, the Catholic church isn't as bad as it used to be. They have realized they are losing members because of archaic laws. So yes, now you can marry someone of a different faith in a Catholic church and get away with it. They do expect you both to go to classes beforehand and generally want more money for letting this happen.

And Catholics are okay with oral sex if it allows the man and woman to climax together.
