I'm a member there and I like it. However, once I started going to the one on Millbrook, I don't like the one on western anymore. Everything at Millbrook is brand new. Overall, for $10 a month with no contract you can't beat it... and, no, there's not a catch.

Is the one on Millbrook located at the intersection of Atlantic Ave. & Millbrook Rd. near Char-Grill?

I go to PF on Western, never any problems if you go at 7am on the weekends like I do

Of course its empty when I go too

Not the best gym, but if you getting started in all of it its not bad, but there is not much room sometimes you do have to wait to use certain machines

eh worth $10/month I would say. Just got to know when to go. Right at 5-6pm M-Th its packed of course, Friday night not so much and weekends not at all. During the day is nothing either.

I go there, it's a nice gym if all you need are some cardio machines and the weight machines... few frills (just the aforementioned tanning booths, and some nice/clean shower areas)

"but if you're lifting heavy, you're going to grunt or drop a weight from every now and then. it happens. asking someone to leave if they do that is bullshit (never been there, but i've heard that's what happens)."

There seems to have been some misinformation about that incident. The person who was asked to leave (according to the article about it that i read) had been yelling and generally making an ass of himself. They won't kick you out for grunting because you're on that last rep and you just want a little more, hell I do it myself (low-level grunter, i keep it quiet). And they don't care if you drop a weight once in a while, but doing it habitually like deadlifters do can hurt the weights, the floor, and the person doing the lifting.

And in today's society, the last thing a gym wants is to encourage behavior that gets someone hurt on the premises. If you can sue McDonald's for having hot coffee, you can sue a gym for letting you hurt yourself there.

I've been going there for 6 months, I've heard the "lunk alarm" go off once in that time and everyone just kinda looked like it barely believe that it actually was on.

"Planet Fitness, which has 120 locations across the country, markets itself as a place where anyone can feel comfortable in its “Judgment Free Zone.”

Its rules, posted around the gym, state members cannot wear bandanas, grunt or bang weights on the ground. When an offender is spotted, a “lunk alarm” sounds to warn the member.

Across its locations nationwide, there is at least one expulsion every two weeks, said Mike Grondahl, CEO of Planet Fitness. He said grunting and dropping weights are the most common offenses.

RULES OF THE GYM
Quote :
"Rules
Planet Fitness gyms have become a source of contention amongst serious strength athletes and bodybuilders due to a series of rules prohibiting many practices favored by these heavy lifters, as is demonstrated by the New York Times article cited above. The franchise says however that it does not cater towards bodybuilders or powerlifters and makes that clear in their tours of the facilities.

These rules include:

The restriction of dumbbell weights to a maximum of 80 pounds
The banning of chalk, often used for heavy lifts such as deadlifts.
The banning of grunting, swearing and psyching-up-rituals.
The banning of excessive noise from bar drops etc. e.g. Olympic lifts.
An alarm (referred to as the "lunk alarm") is set off when individuals drop weights or "grunt" when lifting.
No cell phone use on the gym floor.
A minor dress code for proper workout attire. "

Different gyms cater to different types of people and trainees. Just go to the one you like. PF is perfect for the casual/amateur trainee and lifter, or someone who just wants to work out in a casual atmosphere.
They make it very clear that they aren't for the bodybuilding type or the serious trainee. There are other gyms that cater to that type of thing.

If you are going to do this, record a video of this. Actually, do some highpulls, snatches, or clean and jerks, and then drop the bar--more dramatic.

"I go to the one near jones franklin/western, no real problems with it since I started there in the summer. However, don't expect it to be fucking a+ first class especially for how cheap it is. Did the 10/month deal too, but they'll try to push a $50 initiation fee at first, they 'dropped' mine to $30 but I've heard they sometimes waive it altogether. Only real issue as described before is overcrowding 5-8 or so on weekdays, but that happens everywhere. The real pusher is they're open 24 hours a day during the weekday and 7-7 on weekends, since I'm a night owl. It's pretty clean, modern machines, and plenty of 'em, especially cardio. Free weight area is decent but can be the most packed."

^word.

It's definitely worth my ten dollars a month. I go 5 times a week (although I'm gonna start going every day). If you're looking for all these available features like personal training, classes, more machines, etc etc then this obviously isn't the place...you get what you pay for, just like anything else.

I totally agree. If you can go when there is nobody there, or when its not jam packed, for $10/month its great. You figure you use 5 or more machines every time you go, and you would spend probably $5000+ on this equipment at home- which would probably end up being coat hangers after a while.

Thats 500 months of membership, or 41 years worth of membership. And of course you don't pay to maintain the equipment. Just saying its a good deal- of course its not for everyone. If you are severely overweight and/or need personal attention, this is NOT the kind of place to go to. Pretty much you are on your own, they do have once a month progress things they can look at, but mostly stuff you can check yourself.

I went 6 days a week when I had a membership and lived close. I used to go either in the evenings after work (8-9ish) or in the early AM before work (5 AM or so) and rarely had any problems with it being too busy or inadequate for my needs. I did deadlifts, cleans, and clean and jerks there with no issue.

they have 2 squat racks at the one on Western, and you only need a bar to do those lifts. You can snatch a bar off of a bench if you wanted to.
