this question is equally as dumb as asking if we should have been #1 in the 1AA poll last year

did i just hear them say they changed the rule about D-II teams allowed to be ranked?

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/football/ncaa/09/06/appoll.change.ap/index.htmlnot Div II, but the Div I Championship subdivision (old div 1AA). They'd be lucky to stay in longer than a week though.[Edited on September 6, 2007 at 8:19 PM. Reason : ]

I bet App State clocks in at ~23 in next week's poll. Now, if I-AA (or whatever it is now) is allowed to be ranked, does that make them eligable(sp?) for a BCS bowl?if not then why do we let them be ranked?and that brings into question the formula that says basically a win over a I-AA team doesnt count toward anything[Edited on September 6, 2007 at 9:18 PM. 9/6/2007 9:18:30 PM
a bcs bowl?...a bcs bowl
9/6/2007 9:19:41 PM
They'd never make it high enough to get into a BCS bowl. They might make it to 24 or 25 but more than likely will be out the following week.
9/6/2007 9:20:54 PM
Its crazy to think that they are the 23rd best team in the country. I am sorry even if they were allowed to be in the poll they still haven't earned it.
9/6/2007 9:25:37 PM
you can only let 1 aa win count towards bowl eligibility so they won't be bowl eligible even if they were to finish ranked #1. They'd have to schedule 5 1a teams.
9/6/2007 9:45:48 PM
im not saying i agree with the BCS bowl thing, and I know it'd never happen. However, what is the point of letting them be ranked if they arent eligible for a BCS bowl?
9/6/2007 10:04:37 PM
just to make fun of michigan even more.
9/6/2007 10:07:17 PM
They shouldn't be allowed in the BCS. Just because a 1AA school has a perfect season doesn't mean they are one of the top 8 teams in the country. If they played a season full of all 1A schools then they might have a argument. This is just a stupid topic honestly. Its like saying a 1a high school team should get to play the 4AA school in a championship game.

The real question is, would a low-mid 1A team get ranked after one top ten upset? Generally that does not happen, so ranking App after this win would really only be for the novelty of it. If they filled their nonconference schedule with games against ranked 1A schools instead of low 1AA and Div II schools, and kept winning, then they legitimately would deserve to be ranked. Also, does anyone know how the academic standards of 1AA compares to the lower 1A programs? I know Div 2 is substantially lower but don't know about 1AA. If a program didn't meet 1A academic standards that would be a reason they shouldn't be eligible for the poll.
9/7/2007 9:38:30 AM
^ gotta disagree with you there... if a low-mid 1a team played as well against a #5 michigan team in the first week of the season (before everything else has settled down) they would, at least, receive a few votes for the top 25, if not slide into a 23-25 spot...doesn't matter, the AP Poll has effectively detached itself from the NCAA, operating as a completely autonomous unit and issuing their own arbitrary, non-NCAA backed, championship... they can do whatever the hell they want to, and if they want to put App State in their top 25 then by all means let them
9/7/2007 9:42:49 AM
^The pollsters have decided at this point that Michigan is not really a top 10 team, or even a top 25 team. We have to see more of Michigan before we know that, as I've seen Michigan ranked top 5 preseason before only to field an above-average football team.A little off topic, but what boggles my mind about the whole BCS discussion is that we had a relatively objective formula that worked pretty well, factored in the polls, SOS, records, computer rankings, and all the coaches had agreed on. Unfortunately, a lot of people were upset that USC didn't play a tough schedule and was left out (although they were still AP National Champs), and decided the BCS should be based almost exclusively based on polls, because the computer ratings and SOS were "fickle and arbitrary". I have seen nothing as fickle as the behavior of pollsters.People can disagree on whether we should go to a playoff system (and how it would be set up), but the BCS is many times better than what we had before it, and was a better system than it is today before it was "reformed".
9/7/2007 9:55:23 AM
i think the knee-jerk reaction of dropping michigan out of the poll was a little extreme... and probably unnecessary...they had a brain fart in the first game of the season, of course, this is college football so that derails any national title hopes, but i feel the pollsters were really just punishing michigan for losing so dramatically... they'll be back in the top 20 after 2 weeks...and yes, human pollsters are just about the most fickle things on the planet (see previous paragraph)... putting the national titles in their hands is fairly ridiculous... the computers were doing a much better job (and actually did their job by snubbing USC in favor of two teams with identical records and harder schedules)

9/7/2007 10:00:34 AM
^^^I agree the BCS is better than the previous system...but still...if you are not a top 15 preseason team, you have a 0% chance at playing in the national title game...the BCS formula wouldn't be that horrible if they didn't effectively determine the handful of teams with a shot at playing in the national title game in January based on potential hunches in August
9/7/2007 10:06:03 AM
Fucking stupid. One win doesn't make a team great, nor should rankings be based on it.Does anyone really think that App State is a top 25 team in America? I'm talking day-in and day-out. I love the fact that they won and it's a great story but I think everyone is getting all emotional and it's clouded the collective college FB common sense.
9/7/2007 10:24:03 AM
No I just think Michigan and the Big Ten are severely overratedOMG LETS HAVE AN OSU MICHIGAN NATIONAL TITLE GAME SINCE EACH OF THOSE SHITTY SCHOOLS PLAYED EACH OTHER CLOSE LAST YEAR

i loved the app state win, but it doesnt really make sense to rank app state. you have 2 ways to lean for the polls:1) Michigan was very overrated2) App State was very underratedYes, both can be possible, but as far as the polls are concerned, one of those has to be more important. You either go with Option 1 (which is what they did) and Michigan falls from 5 to out of the rankings, or you go with Option 2, where Michigan shouldnt fall out of the rankings, and App State gets ranked (im not saying they should, just going with the flow of people saying 23,24,25 spot for them). As far as the polls are concerned both cant happen at once imo. If you drop Michigan out of the rankings, this now means that App State only beat a team that doesnt deserve to be ranked in the top 25. still a HUGE win..but not enough of a reason to rank App.
9/7/2007 11:54:01 AM
I disagree. Both dropping Michigan out of the rankings and/or ranking App State are ludicrous.Does anyone really really believe that Michigan isn't a top 25 team or that App State is a top 25 team?IMO, a team should never fall from the #5 spot to out of the poll in one week. That pretty much admits that your poll is totally bogus if you do that.
9/7/2007 12:00:29 PM
preseason polls have been bogus from the beginning of time. and i also wasnt saying that either of those should happen, i was only referring to the extremists that seem to want michigan out of the top 25 AND app in it...if youre going to be that extreme you have to pick one is whati meant.overall tho no, michigan should have dropped to around ~20 imo and app should just get recognition and a chance to be part of history.[Edited on September 7, 2007 at 12:40 PM. They will eventually, then whenever UNCC gets a football team (they will), theyll move up to D-1 before too long. Then NC will have 7 D1 teams, which means in state recruiting wars will be that much tougher and more important.
9/7/2007 1:27:00 PM
I just hope they lose to a 1-AA school this season...so they'll finally have to stfu
9/7/2007 1:27:37 PM
^Why do you have some much hatred for ASU? Just admit that they are better than us and be done with it. You talk shit about all of this and you didn't even know that Edwards was not playing against us. It should have been pretty obvious. Old QB=white (Trey Elder). New QB=black (Armanti Edwards).

Fuck App. State if they want to be ranked in the top 25 then they should step up to the big leagues instead of squeaking by an overrated Michigan team one weak and then going back to JV ball. I still think if they came to Carter-Finley or even if we went to their pathetic stadium that we would still win. Until they play a talented team every week I have no respect for them. ^Exactly. Thank you. They have had nothing to do with the damn polls. People just troll.I believe to have a D-1A program you have to have an interstate to be exact. HWY 421 is 4-lane and they are making HWY 321 4-lane. So I am not sure if that would make them qualify or not. And Kidd-Brewer only holds 16,000 but they average 23,000 and there were 26,000 at the Furman game this past year. They are slowly building it up. They don't really have a lot to work with there. Sometime in the near future they are going to add about 5,000 seats to the "visitor" side to put them over 20k.
9/9/2007 12:22:17 PM
I was at the game yesterday, they had a record number (28,000).And I'm amazed that so many people stayed until the end of the game, even though it was 48-0 until the last minute and a half when LR scored. We got there early so we could get front row, 20 yard line. Right behind the dance team.
9/9/2007 12:36:17 PM
even though LR is more or less a high school team, look at this* Edwards didn't play* The backup QB led them to 38-0 midway through the 2nd quarter* they pulled a lot of the starters, and threw just 6 passes for the last 35+ minutes of the gamehttp://goasu.com/article/11006/

it was impressive. However I don't think Michigan will be ranked in the top 25 the rest of the season. They blow.
