Just got back from it. I thought it was pretty good, myself. I couldn't have asked for a more fucked up ending. To the people who said that it seemed "too easy," what exactly made you think that? What would you have preferred to see instead?

I really do wish they would have explained the mist and the creatures in more detail, though. All we got was some throw-away line about scientists doing extra-dimensional research. It would have also been nice to see just how far the effects of the mist spread.

*****MINOR SPOILERS*****

I fucking cheered when the luddite preacher bitch finally got some hot lead shoved through her skull. My only regret is that she didn't suffer more horribly.

Also, does anybody know what became of the black lawyer dude and his band of merry men? We never actually saw them die, and since the mother at the beginning made it out safely I take that as meaning that the lawyer and his crew might have also survived.

*****END SPOILER*****

I think that this movie is dead-on with its cynical message about humanity. Take away a civil society's basic utilities, city services, etc, and suddenly it's not so civilized anymore. Reason also seems to go out the door as well. When shit hits the fan people will do anything if they think it will make all the bad things go away, even if doing them is actually detrimental from a rational stand point. As an example, think about all those people in the Middle East who are starving, have no water, are afflicted by disease, have loved ones die every day, are slaughtered by their own leaders, etc. Then everybody wants to know why it seems like all of the fundamentalist nut-job suicide bombers come from that area. No shit they'll turn to a religious interpretation that promises to take them away from all of that and put them in paradise with 72 virgins for all of eternity. As somebody in the movie put it, people will turn to whoever will offer them some kind of solution.

It really reminded me of Lord of the Flies... and the ending wasn't horrible. I just didn't get the desired effect from it because I felt like I had already seen it before... but I definitely think that an elaboration or more in depth look at the explanation of the mist would have made it MUCH better movie for me.

the damn suspense comes from not knowing much about it at all.

This story has been done before: It was called Half-Life.

******* SPOILER ALERT **********

I really liked the movie. I think more could have done to demonstrate why the preacher lady gained such ravenous followers. But overall my only objection is with the ending. The characters did so well until this point where they suddenly lost their minds. They did not try anything! They did not think of siphoning gas from other vehicles, they did not try to switch vehicles to one with more fuel. There were wrecked cars on the road, presumably the engine stopped and the driver eaten, but the keys should still be in the ignition. It would be better to die trying anything than just blow your brains out.

If we want the occupants to shoot themselves then it can be done. If the vehicle became swarmed by spiders or stinging insects and there was no way to get out, then shooting yourself becomes reasonable. After the deed, the character screams and gets all emotional, and then flames engulf the car, burning off the insect creatures. Then, out of the mist, a tank rolls by with troops carrying flamethrowers; unaware anyone was in the car. The character steps out of the charred vehicle to witness the convoy roll by. THAT is how I would have ended it. Comments/suggestions?

hahaha

It's funny you mention that, because during the movie I was thinking "what caused the rift to this other dimension? Did Gordon Freeman put a bad sample of crystal into the machine?"

Oh, I know. But the explanation given in the movie and the one from the story published in 1980, as I understand it, had very little to do with each other. In the story there was no hint that the creatures came from another dimension because of a government experiment gone awry, not that such a concept would have even been new in 1980.

Similarly, some of the creatures in the movie were somewhat Zen-esk, such as the big walker.

i liked it, surprisingly enough. does make you feel like shit. In fact, the last movie i saw in the theatre made me feel like shit too, that's two in a row (no country for old men)

both great movies, especially the latter- but both bummers

so i saw this movie with my fiancee, and afterwords she said something about a "giant spider". i didn't remember any giant spider, but she was talking about the big walker thing. i said "oh, the brontosaurus thing?" and she thought i was crazy.

so, big walker: more spider or more brontosaurus?
