parking garages in the city are about $50-$60 a day to park."

more like 30 but thats still high.

you can park in a port authority garage in new jersey for either free or really cheap i forget then take njtransit to nyc.

if you drive to nyc and want to save money get off of 95 in deleware and go through philly via us 1 (capital blvd). It takes you straight up to nyc toll-free. the length of the nj turnpike costs like 20 something.

i've gotten garages for $20/day in the 90s. i live on W 47th St and there is free parking on it... you gotta switch sides every other day. there are plenty of areas in the city with free street parking if you know where to look. you just gotta read the signs to know what side to park on that day b/c of street sweeping.

gotta be up early if you're trying to find a spot though. it's tough. i don't have a car in the city b/c i don't need one... i'm also glad i don't have to deal w/ the hassle of having a car in this city. i know some others that do though and they don't pay to park.

All those bars are good suggestions. Here are a few more: Off the Wagon & Down the Hatch in the village, Brother Jimmys & Mo's Caribbean on the UES in the 70s, Hotel Gansevoort down in the meatpacking district (another $$$ rooftop bar, with a great view of NJ), and I've heard the Boat Basin on the UWS is pretty sweet but I haven't been there yet. You can pretty much find kickass bars whereever you look down in the East Village, Greenwich Village, & SoHo. Oh, and there's a revolving lounge on the 48th floor of the Marriot in Times Square thats pretty sweet. There's also a nice beach bar right on the East River in Long Island City. Its all outside, the ground is covered entirely with sand, and they have volleyball courts set up all day.

If you want a really good authentic italian meal go down to Mulberry St (heart of little italy) and walk up and down the street and pick a restaurant that seems to suit you.

For a good view of the city I'd recommend going to the Top of the Rock, 30 Rockefeller Center.

Off the Wagon is cheap as shit but way to many frat doods and college kids to be fun. Ive been in when it was less crowded and it was good.

Go to all the 'little' areas. Little Italy, Korea Town, China Town, St. Marks street. Take a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and go to Grimaldi's one of the best area pizza joints (Coal Fired oven). Visit the Museums. Go to Clinton St. Bakery for some good breakfast (sugar glazed bacon!). I liked the MOMA and Guggenheim. Central Park. Get a hot dog in a pita. Go to Macdougal street (NYU area) for cheaper drinks. A lot of the places are pretty upscale unless you want to drink at chains or something. Be ready to spend money and keep cash on hand for Taxi's and vendors that don't take cards.

Yeah like others have said go to Chelsea Market, Pier 17, Union Square Park (lots of places to shop, eat, and relax). Go to the giant Macy's, Bloomindales, and Saks (you're bound to find a good deal). Don't be stressed you won't be able to see everything.

47th and 9th. 500 sf + a small private backyard.

^ cabs are the way to go imo... especially in the summer. i take the subway when i can, but the platforms get really fucking hot and humid. cabs aren't crazy expensive or anything, especially if you have a few people. i ride the bus a lot too... good for going crosstown or to get out of the rain.

$1600 split w/ my gf. it's a 1-bedroom... works for us, but not good for roomates unless you don't mind sleeping in the same bed w/ them. our couch in the living room folds into a bed when we have guests.

I was over there yesterday and was looking at a real estate office window and there was a 900 sf 1bed for 2300 and that was incredible. Everything else was upwards of $3000 for 700 sf 1beds. Of course they always lie about that shit so god knows what the actually square footage is.

Yeah that is a damn good deal! On my street there is a 2 bdrm for rent, $4950. I have no idea how big it is, but the places around here are for the most party tiny.

The 3 bdrm I live in is probably ~700sq ft and rent's around $4300/mo.

I'm gonna be there Saturday-Tuesday. Staying in midtown (near Grand Central Terminal) but most of the stuff we're doing is on the lower east side. Any suggestions for good bars? I'd also like to check out some badass thrift stores when I'm in town if they're not a pain to get to. Anything else cool to check out? We're not really into plays or tours of things.

We're going to shows on Sunday and Monday, but don't know what we're doing Monday. Hitting up Orchard Street to shop, I guess, in the afternoon. I dunno. I haven't been since high school.

spooky,

check out Rififi's which i think is on 9th or 10th around 1st ave. They have random comedy and bands along with go go dancers. Try and go to a show at Cake Shop if theres anything good. Its on Ludlow st and they have a stage in the basement similar to The Cave.

food..

go to Fried Dumpling on Allen right below Dalancey. They have 5 pork dumplings for a buck along with other random meat filled shit. If you can get there go to Prospect Heights in brooklyn and pig out on Jamacian Patties. Also check out the vietnamese sandwich shops in chinatown. Theres one called Siagon bakery which is a silly nik nak store in the front and the bakery in the back. I think its at the mott and grand intersection.

ive got a ton of shit you could do so let me know what else you're looking for.

Always good shenanigans to be found in Greenwich village, specifically just south and west of NYU. Around West 3rd street, Bleecker, and MacDougal street you can't go wrong. Most of those places are relatively cheap too.

I'm definitely trying to check out a comedy show or two while I'm up there. Is there any general comedy shows web site? I can't really find anything. I'm checking out assorted venues, too.

Gonna have some time to explore Brooklyn, too, so that should be fun.

Under St. Marks is a pretty good place for cheap improve comedy. It's BYOB and the $5 cover charge includes a shot of SoCo... at least that is the way the 10:30pm Friday show is done. Located at 94 St. Marks Place.

Rogue Elephant is a good act at Under St. Marks. I've seen some other good groups there, but can't remember their names. Rubin Williams used to be there, but they are now at Uprights Citizen Brigade.

My wife just interviewed for anesthesia residency at St. Lukes roosevelt.

At first i was adamant against living there b/c of cost of living, but the hospital subsidizes rent, and we'd be in a 2 bedroom on 58th and 10th avenue for $1700/month.

so now, i'd be down.

i split a $1600 1bed in brooklyn with my gf so my rent is ok. I guess you realize that your rent also means you wont need a car payment, insurance and gas.

I guess I never even considered moving to Manhattan b/c I cant afford splitting a 1 bedroom apartment with my gf unless we moved to harlem or by the river in the UES. Queens and Brooklyn are cheap if you find the right spot even if most of the cheap spots arnt exactly safe.

also its snowing

also the majority of people working in NYC and buying places arnt normal people

I wish I didn't have to My f*cking company moved to a new location in Qns over 2 miles from the nearest subway stop. So with the subway and bus my commute is 1 hr +. So I DO drive to work, DO have to pay for gas, and DO have to pay insurance.

All good though, as soon as I find something good around Ral I'm gone
