This is one of the more awesome things you will see. Not really in a good way, awesome doesn't always mean good. Like when the twin towers collapsed. That is by far THE most awesome thing any one of us will ever see in our life time. But this bridge thing, its kinda up there, but not as close, but it is randomness, death toll, and just overall wtfedness rates it up there as being awesome. I mean, what if you were just driving home from work over any large bridge that crosses a river in a big city, and all of a sudden!!! BAMMMM!!! Shit just falls!!!! Fuck that would be AWESOME!!!

sad day, sad day indeed.this will have an effect on all state DOT's now. the DOT will be pressured into replacing structures quicker, but the DOT does not have the money to do it. so, then the budget will reflect the peoples wishes of replacing bridge structures. once the dust settles, and no more bridges callapse for a couple of years, the people will forget this collapse and need the money somewhere else. this is a viscous cycle.

This reminds me back to when I did bridge inspections w/ the DOT for my internship.A lot of those were rather scary to look at looking from underneath the bridge.I'm thankful stuff like this doesn't happen more often.Damn shame about what happened in Minnesota though. Whoever was the engineer on that project is probably halfway to Mexico by now.

Maybe now would be a good time to write your senators/congressmen/women about the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge on the NC Outer Banks.Since 2002, NCDOT bridge inspections have rated the bridge a 4 out of 100 (100 being the best score). Over 6 million vehicles have passed over the bridge since the 2002 inspection.http://www.replacethebridgenow.com/I feel like one of those antigun zealots right after VT now

^ No really dude that's not being crazy at all. There are some seriously shitty bridges in this state that people drive over every day.Hell, while I was working there we rediscovered a concrete box culvert bridge that wasn't marked on the map. We just pulled over and my boss was like "What the hell is this? It's not on the map." Turns out it had something like 6 feet of gap between the base of the edge of the culvert and the soil underneath it (basically the edge of it was unsupported, which means that there was no support under what looked like 10-30% of the bridge to keep it from "tipping" over). Had somebody go out there and fill it in with rocks the next day. There's bridges out there on the highway that you drive over that would irk the shit out of you if you saw what condition they were in underneath. There's probably going to be a lot of bridge construction projects picking up in the next 20 years as inspectors report more of the bridges in this state as being old and shitty. Same with everywhere else. A lot of those bridges you drive on on the interstate were built 30-50 years ago, and they're getting towards the end of their service life... Hopefully none of them were built poorly so that we can avoid a serious incident like what they had in Minnesota.

yeah, I have a friend who is very scared of driving over bridges. Now I understand why that is a reasonable fear. This seems like something that only happens in people's nightmares, like dreams of falling. Too bad this is reality.
