i've always wondered what that must be like

I, and I would guess a lot of others here, have been rocking the Civ hard since the original.

this also goes as a general wondering of video games... my first system was the 2600... can you imagine your first system being the PS2 or PS3 or equivalent... crazy

I don't know about different age groups, I played the original Civ on my 386, and I am 25.

i'm saying the people that are now 18 or just coming into college probably didn't play the original Civ cause they would have been too young to really understand the game.

today's civ has so much fucking micromanaging going on that it's not really the same game. the way they changed combat (promotions in civ 4) and espionage is so weird

Civ 2 was the pinnacle despite the flaws. Those advisor videos were hilarious, and my throne room was always pimp

I just wish the UN was more useful besides the new resolutions. Like in order to join the UN you had to offer up some military units under the UN control and the Secretary General gets complete control of the units but can only be used vs. nations that are at war but not at war with the Secretary General's nation....

i still love them all and appreciate civ4s newness (although you should be able to go against the un with consequences like real life)civ 2 was truly the best. Sea units being able to attack land was realistic as well as loading up cruise missiles and aircraft actually moving around. an airbase actually meant something.

i have warlords and beyond the sword and a new computer. Would installing warlords do me any good? Can you have both at the same time or do you have to pick or does beyond the sword have warlords incorporated into it?

I installed both warlords and BtS cause warlords adds some scenarios but you can't play both together. For example things like the Warlord unit are now called The Great General

I really hate what they did with combat in civ IV, like totally rewarding fortified units... it's lame these days
build a bunch of specialized units.. then send in your catapults to do collateral damage and then send your stack in. it really just made it more of a pain in the ass to swiftly sweep a continent.

there is also no way to really sneak attack and there's no bonus for attack a city from behind enemy lines all nazi style

I thought sea battles in Civ 2 were the best, epic. The later games really de-emphasized it, which is a shame. Nothing like having a fleet sweep across the earth.

Flying stuff to airports is obviously better, but it's not as romantic.

The game isn't command & conquer either. Adding obvious military mechanics like that would make the military victories broken. Civ IV is incredibly well balanced.

NO SHIT it's not command and conquer. it's simply too "well-balanced" to allow war-mongering societies. it acts as if a superempire like rome in 150 AD could simply never exist because of the superfortified soldiers in the cities of every fucking other society in the world. apparently everyone at that time was out building fucking libraries and marketplaces

i didn't pirate the game. i bought civ4 and warlords and sent in my vassal funded privateer to go get BTS. It didn't work out cuz it kept asking for a cd so i'll just buy it probably fall break or something.

^^simply not true. I consistently win on Noble and Warlord before 1AD by domination and conquest victory. It CAN be done, just not systematically or easily. If you have the right starting location, leader and conditions you can WIPE people fast. A 5 or 6 axeman rush + a leader with automatic combat promotion and barracks will wipe archers out no problem. ive cleared 5-6 cities in a row with a 5 axeman rush plus continued production.

Better yet, Dog Soldiers. I had my earliest victory with those guys.

Though I think Praetorians are still the most powerful early rush. If you beeline to iron they can be unstoppable even without cats. (though there is a point to be made that city defenses can get a bit ridiculous).

if you wait to the point of walls/castles and longbowmen you can forget about it unless you go for a HUGE tech rush to cavalry/cannons.

Then you can pull a early AD rush too. Sending in like 10 cavalry and 4-5 cannons against longbowmen and macemen is another quick crushing victory.

japanese samurai I've found are the best since they fare pretty damn well until calvary. musketmen are almost worthless

been playing this with a good friend the last couple of days. it's pretty goddamn fun to play on pangea with an unnecessary amount of competitors on prince. the berserkers are probably the best special unit in the game, IMO.
