Blue Sky and Statesboro Blues by ABB are two of my favorite because of Duanes tone and phrasing.

^^ Gotta love some TR. I saw him at MerleFest this year and also up in Asheville.I'd love to put some Rich Brotherton in here, but I can't find anything online or in my collection that comes close to see what I've seen him do live with REK. FWIW, he was a big fan of Tony Rice himself.I'm not sure how people missed Frampton on this one. I'm not wowed by his used of the synthesizer with his voice, but the drive at the end of "Do You Feel Like I Do" . . . well, yeah. Goodness throughout, but my favorite part starts around the 11:20 mark. Pretty slick bass line too.

First of all, KISS is mainly popular for their stage show/live performance moreso than their music even. Second of all, yes they have tons of fans but their music is simple. The songs were in no way musically complex or challenging, they were meant to be catchy and fun. Im not a KISS fan but they did this perfectly.HOWEVER, this in no way means we have to give them a nod for being awesome guitar players or something. Able to write catchy power rock? yes. Awesome guitar playing? eh Hardly. Definitely nothing to even remotely consider for a best solo ever thats for sure.In Music tons of fans = catchy songs and most certainly does NOT = technically sound all the time.

Almost anything Mark Knopfler
7/31/2007 8:31:02 AM
^^but from that point of view, if you take into account the catchy, simple song....it would need a catchy simple solo. Pop/Rock songs do not need technical solos. I would say to you that the right notes are played at the right time for the song at hand.
7/31/2007 10:29:20 AM
on some levels i agree. a lot of nirvana's solos fit their songs perfectly and were 'good solos' from the standpoint of filling that gap in the song. still very few of them i would consider for a 'best solos ever' list, theyre just serving their purpose.ace's seem to either be trying too hard and it doesnt flow well with the otherwise simple song, or its bare minimum, and no one should get recognized for that. and most of his solos werent very catchyits kind of like at your job. You can come in every day and do everything well, get 40 hours in and leave. And thats fine, youre doing what you are paid to do. But so is everyone else and it doesnt deserve any mention in the newspaper. There is the point just beyond that..but before overdoing it which is where the best work lies that gets noticed by managers, same goes for solos. A million songs have solos and Aces are as generic as they come. Just because a solo is simple doesnt mean it doesnt have to be creative or unique.see half of billy corgan's leads/solos. he has some ungodly knack to fall in that small niche where the best solos lie.oh and PS Yngwie Malmsteen is an example of overdoing it 9 times out of 10 imo. Amazing talent but doesnt write anything musically interesting.[Edited on July 31, 2007 at 10:53 AM. Reason : ]
