I love how the people in this thread arguing for these changes have either:A) never lived in a big cityorB) know jackshit about traffic flow.Loneshark, joe_schmoe and a few others have some sense thank god.[Edited on July 17, 2007 at 1:44 PM. Reason : k]

It's not a fucking loop. It's 3 highways. Why not just keep I40 e/w, stick to US1 n/s, and I440 e/w? (kind of like the "inner loop" in charlotte)I540/640/840 is an actual loop. It should retain 'inner' and 'outer'.I have lived in a large city and traffic engineers don't know shit about building neighborhoods/communities.

^Look if you can follow the 440 signs, which is something a 5 yr old can do, then you're just dealing with semantics.
7/17/2007 8:45:50 PM
i guess its a moot point. the decision to change it has been made. all thats left to do is finish changing the signs.since theyve removed the part of I440 concurrent along I40 south of raleigh, it makes sense to call it I440 E/W, since it only exists across the northern half of raleigh now.i didnt have any problem with it being an inner/outer loop but i can see how it might confuse the fuck out of visitors. especially with the new 540 being continually referred to as "outer"

Oh shit, so these "suggestions" are being carried out? Or just the I-440 one. God help us if they take away the one way streets in downtown.
7/17/2007 11:23:28 PM
^ im just sayin about I440 the decision has (apparently) already been made and is being implementedhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_440_(North_Carolina)....but one way streets downtown are vital for relieving traffic bottlenecks in any moderately sized city. any second-year civil engineering student knows that. i cant believe that was a serious suggestion.[Edited on July 17, 2007 at 11:33 PM. I'm not trying hard to be the next anyone. You don't have any more of a clue what the actual report contains more than I do. However, having worked for a firm that does this kind of work, I can tell you that the numbers back up these kinds of expenditures time and time again. Government agencies especially, hire out consulting firms to do these reports because they have a track record of high ROI from them.

these plans cost a little more

No light rail! In raleigh such would be a waste of money. If you want, expand the bus network with perhaps dedicated roads, but rail costs a shit-ton of money and only goes where it goes.
