there was a huge breakdown in communication, code-breaking and delivery on that day in Pearl Harbor and Washington DC. the decoded message arrived, it had just arrived too late which ultimately cost the lives of 1000+ military personnel.

for the "letting it happen on purpose" argument of Pearl Harbor, there were no reasons for the US to go to war on another front. men were coming home after enduring long tours in Europe and up to that point before Pearl Harbor was bombed, there was no reason to even consider going to war with Japan. they were no where near the US and were not a potential risk. in fact, Japan and US had a standing "agreement" that no hostilities would ever be taken towards one another. unfortunately, Japan used that to throw off the US and catch them unprepared.

At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. was not at war on any front. Germany declared war on us after we declared war on Japan.

I think that FDR was highly motivated to get the US into the war. He had to find a way to push a highly isolationist country towards his goal. The Japanese already had a history of sneak attacks. His people simply tied things up here and there to allow the attack to be carried out.

I could see a politician "sacrificing" lives in order to consolidate power and control. All he had to do was let some strangers die. FDR had his Pearl Harbor, Hitler had his Reichstag fire ...It's the same old story through-out history.

there is no evidence he simply had his people tie things up and allow the attack to happen. this is what did happen:

Well that could've happened as well. Since we were not there in the inner circle of FDR and his staff at the time...since we cannot read his mind... either theories could be true.

Pro-FDR historians will write it one way while those on the other side will write their version. The point is there is no way to be 100% sure on any theory when it comes to many of our political leader's motivations and actions.

i'm sorry, but even "getting your dates mixed up" isn't sufficient. When you hear the words "Pearl Harbor," you should think "propelled the US into WW2." There really is no excuse for that, man

I highly doubt FDR allowed Pearl Harbor to happen.

If the goal was to really get the US involved he could have done so without sacrificing so many sailors and losing a few battleships in the process. He could have intercepted the Japanese fleet on the way to the attack which would have easily have been seen as a motivation to declare war.

If he really wanted to FDR could have used the sinking of the Panay as a pretext for war with Japan and the numerous U-boat attacks on American supply ships as pretext for war with Germany.

Either would have provided ample excuse and wouldn't have crippled the American navy.
