I joke with my friends all the time, but for christ's sake I don't tell them I have cancer to get a rise out of them.

Not an asshole.Your wife needs to get a sense of humor about it. I bet she doesn't have brothers. In fact, I will donate $10 to leukemia research if she has brothers, because if she did then she would understand.

^^ My wife does have a brother, but he's nothing like me. He's the more sensitive type. Or as I like to call him, a big soggy vagina. But if you still want to spot leukemia reseach the sawbuck, you'd be doing some good.

so how do you know he's not messing with you this time?

I visited him in the hospital. He's telling the truth.

i'm sorry that sucks. hopefully he'll recover.. leukemia isn't the death sentence that it used to be.

Honestly, when people are sick, they really want people to treat them normal and not dwell. I have also been on the receiving side of the joke and speak from experience, he knows that you did not believe him at first and was joking. Honestly, your friend most likely is not dwelling on it, so you should not dwell either.Take the family dinner at the hospital or gift cards for food. If he has family staying at the hospital with him, it gets expensive quick and you often forget to take care of yourself.
