I use the lounge rooms (like the one at Southpoint) when they are available. However, at most restaurants, they are not available. I absolutely hate taking my child to the restroom to feed her. Not only is in uncomfortable, but it's also gross to have to take your kid to the room where people put their urine and feces so that they can eat. For everyone who said to bring a bottle--I don't usually give her bottles and she really hates it when I do. I might as well not feed her as to give her a bottle. She usually wont take it and winds up screaming. I occasionally do pump, but I can't do it very much (without going into detail, let's just say it hurts if you do it too much). Even if I did pump, we go back to the whole bottle issue.

if there's no other place to go then do it where you are. it's legal. when you can, go where there are less people.[/thread]

I have no problem as far as the topic goes, "Breastfeeding in public places". It doesn't offend me; it's a natural thing. With that said, I don't know how I would react if it happened at a nice, sit-down restaurant. I wouldn't be offended, but might feel a little uncomfortable. It's almost too "real", seeing a baby sucking away while I'm eating. Of course, it's 100x better than having the baby cry, and it's easy just to look away. And I can't expect the mother to squeeze into a bathroom stall to do it. I'd just rather the baby not be in the restaurant at all if I'm there

TheTabbyCat why do you just not feed your baby before or after you leave the restaurant?? Feed your kid in public if you want but please do not if you are in my line of sight at a nice restaurant paying $20 for a meal.

I've woken up in a plane and found a little kid peering at me from between the seats in front of me. After making a few faces and laughing with him, I readjusted my posture and noticed a titty in his mouth. True story.

It doesn't bother me at all. Hey, the kid's not going to be screaming with a titty popped in his or her mouth, am I right? Thus, I can enjoy my meal in peace.

You people against breastfeeding in public are morons. It's how a baby eats. Do you want to keep a baby from eating? Don't say that they should pump and use a bottle until you see what a pain in the ass that is for a mother to go through. Besides, how would you like it if I told you that you could eat all of your favorite food you wanted, but you had to suck it through a coffee straw? How about if you don't want to see a baby eating, you leave the area. The mother and baby obviously aren't uncomfortable, it's your ignorant social stigma that is making you feel feel that way. Some people in this thread should never have or be allowed near children, I can't believe some of you people are in college or are graduates. Many of you act like parents are idiots and are going to take their kid to fucking Melting Pot or something. No parents I know would do that, they would get a sitter or just not go. I'm not saying there aren't people out there who wouldn't take their kid to a nice restaurant, but in my experience those people also don't have the sense to breastfeed their baby either.
6/8/2007 4:22:13 PM
the human body is not indecentnudity shouldn't even be considered indecentbreastfeeding CERTAINLY is not indecentdoes anyone understand how important it is for the bond between a mother and child to be formed through breastfeeding? I don't even like the fact that some women bottle feed their babies, unless they simply can't breastfeed. "it hurts! they bite! nyah nyah nyah!"You had a kid. Deal with it and feed the little bastard. The continuum concept ftw. [Edited on June 8, 2007 at 4:41 PM. Reason : j]

6/8/2007 5:26:42 PM
Don't turn this into a formula vs breast milk debate, because that it is not. Plus I think that there is more than ample evidence out there to prove that baby's should be fed breast milk if at all possible, so any mother who physically can do so should.
6/8/2007 5:26:57 PM
Last time we were out in public, my wife took our son to the restroom and breastfed him there with no problem. SHE gets kinda weirded out by doing that shit in public, and I'm just fine with it like that.BTW, breastfed babies sometimes don't take to a bottle well, but sometimes they are just fine with it. When my wife works at a restaurant one or two evenings a week, she has a handheld pump that she gets some food with, and the baby eats it up like a champ. If we have plans to go somewhere that it may take longer than 2 hours (his usual eating interval) then she will pump in advance, or if thats not possible go feed in a bathroom, car, or somewhere private, or just not go. I personally don't care if a woman does it in public if properly covered up, but I kinda like that she doesn't go whipping her breast out in front of people like that to feed. I guess some women don't have the luxury of time to plan, or don't have any issues with modesty.
6/8/2007 5:41:29 PM
Sheesh, what a ridiculous argument.Breastfeeding baby is ok in public--just don't wipe the baby's ass in public.Breastfeeding in public >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> wiping baby's ass in public

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE breastfeed your baby whenever she is hungry, in public or otherwise. Cover him if it is more comfortable to you and her, but if I happen to see you breastfeed in front of me please be assured that I would not be offended. IMO, Breastfeeding is NOT some beautiful moment between mother and child, it's just a moment-- it happens. It's not to be thought of for more than a second by a stranger. If you saw a person at a food court eating chick-fil-a would you even think about it? NO. It's just a child eating, from a breast (OMG it's a TIT!!!!!)If I was at a restaurant and my waiter or another waiter at the establishment asked a woman(me or a stranger) to leave because she was breastfeeding I would complain to management (if the woman approves of me voicing my opinion on her behalf) and I definitely would not leave much of a tip if it was my own waiter who was rude to her.If you are offended, here's an idea: Don't look. There are plenty of times something I see grosses me a little-- I just don't look back and avert my attention elsewhere. It's common sense.Everything Opstand said is perfect. With all that said: The summer between 3rd and 4th grade I was at the mall with my mom buying new sneakers for school when we ran into my 2nd grade teacher. I hadnt seen her for a long time because she was "sick" for a long part of the past year and hadnt been teaching. When I saw her she was sitting on a display chair breastfeeding her baby. I couldnt understand, why there was a baby on her chest and what she was doing. All I remember was my mom acting very disgusted and shooing me away. My mom never breastfed me or my sister and always said that "she couldnt" Anyways, I kept asking questions about it, even after being yelled at for being "inappropriate" so my parent gave up and I finally learned where babies came from. I can't stand how people think that this is "inappropriate" [/story]Good luck with your father-in-law, I hope he realizes how much of a dick he's been to you and his own granddaughter.[Edited on June 8, 2007 at 7:49 PM. You people have GOT to be fucking kidding me. Breast feeding is inappropriate and disgusting? It's no wonder we have some of the most uptight assholes in this country. When I have children, my wife will be more than welcome to breast feed them anytime she pleases. If someone has a problem with it then they can kiss my ass. It's a BREAST! That's WHY women have them. Half of the people in the world have them. Pretty much everyone over the age of 12 has seen them. Hell, I get disgusted when I go out and see slobs stuffing their faces and talking with their mouths full. I guess I have a right to tell those people to get the hell out? You people need to grow up.

Breast feeding is not offensive to me. But let me warn you... some people out there are pretty perverted. You may draw some unwanted attention from wandering eyes. I remember a few years ago my cousin was breast feeding her baby at a park and some guys came around hootin' and hollerin'. She was pretty embarassed and never breast fed in public ever again.
