Yeah exactly, and the only thing I can think of is if it causes bronchial dialation then it's possible to have the same effect on the ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses, but that's not my field, i'm an engineer. I can note though that my friends always comment that I sniff a lot less after smoking. (My allergies cause me to usually have a stuffy or irritated nose all the time.)[Edited on May 29, 2007 at 3:30 PM. Reason : :]

I know most nasal sprays work bc they have a vasoconstictor, so they attach to different receptors.. a vs. b.. if i remember my pharm correctly. I think the vasocontrictor is what aids the decongestant and helps with sinus, vs a bronchiol dilator.

Yeah but most vasoconstrictors are drugs like amphetamines, heroin, steroids, and cocaine which cause a hell of a lot of trouble on the body. So i'd rather not take any of those drugs in excess, whereas marijuana has been known to decrease cerebral and sinal swelling in studies i've read. So if it works for me, then i'm okay with that. I'll continue to find out why.

Steriods are safe to use, but like all drugs have side effects. I certainly wouldnt recommend you use cocaine when you have other drugs, less addictive and legal as alternatives. I believe the most commonly use decongestant is phenylephrine. I also use it to dilate eyes. Id also be interested if you would ask your doc how it works to relieve it. I enjoyed the discussion. You have a good one.[Edited on May 29, 2007 at 4:24 PM. Reason : >]

Yeah but aren't there recent studies that show phenylephrine might not be any more effective than a placebo? And it causes hypertension. For example alot of doctors say that companies are switching from pseudoephedrines to phenylephrines, and phenylephrines arn't as effective. Also many doctors say that using phenylephrines in a nasal spray are fine for short term stuffiness because of a cold, but should not be used long term because there's a rebound effect which might worsen cogestion.yeah you too, and i'll ask him about that. A close friend of mine works at Duke Med and they're banning smoking by employees even outside the building. She thought it was because they were trying to be PC or influence the lifestyles of their workers, but I pointed out that most companies who provide health coverage probably get a big incentive from the health care provider to do something like this. In the end it's all about the money.
