it's just that I've been diagnosed add, and I don't see it. I asked my aunt (a doctor, works with cancer patients so not the same feild, but still a doctor) and she said that it's only diagnosed in the US, in other countries they just need more discipline. and there's the southpark episode

yeah, my mother still doesn't believe it's a problem either, but what can you do...

btw, the who does identify it as a disorder in the icd, so it's not just an americanism--

No.

Neither bipolar nor any other mental disorder excuses a lack of respect and basic decency. Sometimes in the midst of things, people do grossly misbehave, but many, many people have consistent patterns of unacceptable behavior and try to blame it on whatever disorder they have, regardless of whether it's a valid cause or not. That's kinda what goes on with many folks with ADD/ADHD

It really pisses me off when folks refuse to accept responsibility for their actions

most people dont really understand mental disorders. They think you are batshit crazy or sit around sad and crying all day. It reminds me of an everclear lyric that says:

"you are neurotic and depressed it doesnt mean that you're sad."

"do you think add or adhd are real or just excuses for those parents that don't beat their kids when they deserve it?"

yes yes yes it is real.
I was diagnosed and was on ritalin for at least 8 years or so when i was in school. they say some kids grow out of it when they get to puberty but i think thats just a cop out for kids that dont really have it. I have gone off medicine and I figured out how to manage it better but it still happens a LOT where someone will be taking to me and only me directly to my face and i will have to ask them to repeat what they just said because i was not paying attention i did not "listen to" a single word they said. i hear it but it does not register because i am not paying attention and i dont know what they said. sometimes it is just me and another person alone and i still need them to repeat it. It drives my GF NUTS!!!!

I feel embarrassed by it at work because im supposed to be a professional engineer and i cant listen to what people tell me or are saying. I hate asking people to repeat it but i have to a lot of the time. most of the time i just assume they said something and repeat it back to them like "so this and that is messed up in this way" and they will usually respond to whether it is correct or not. sometimes i wonder if that dosent make me look even more stupid than asking them to just repeat it.

discipline is all you need.

giving your undisciplined behaviors a name, is just a mental block to what truly is holding you back.

you dont need meds, you're not different ( biologically ) than anyone else.

im sure this bi polar behavior stems from insecurities that you try to shun. dont let these things define you, you must define yourself in order to overcome these things.

you've been brainwashed you think you are different, that you are somehow less appealing, somehow not as good as others. Define yourself, discipline yourself, give yourself some purpose and you'll see that bipolar is just another name made up to keep you on your knees.

Get up and walk. walk .

lamictal fucked me up for life.

^^honestly, i've found exercise to be one of the best things for me. i stopped taking depressant meds years ago, and now i only take a super-low-dose generic for chronic headaches.

i need to go back to the doctor but i don't want to. i hate being medicated. i took lexapro last year and i didn't like it...has anyone else been on lexapro? its supposed to be like the shit. but i thought it was awful. does anyone take any natural remedies for anxiety/depression/ocd? what about paxil...heard mixed reviews. is it really as bad for you as they say? i just don't like the idea of being on medication AT ALL. i don't even like taking tylenol unless i absolutely have to. but sigh...when i have super mood swings and panic attacks i always really really really wish that i was taking medicine.

bipolar disorder doesn't stem from insecurities

thankfully your opinion on psychology and psychiatry is fucking meaningless

I took lexapro because my ex gf forced me to after I got in a crazy fight at playmakers with some kid singing karaoke lol

took it for 2 weeks, made my pecker quit working, so I put them away

the problem wasn't me it was her

I still have the pills if anyone needs them

dumbshit

couldn't those things be correlative, or even stemming from, the disorder?

You could probably go see a shrink and get benzos for as-needed basis.

fuck man, the name is the disorder.

Define who you are, and you define what means what.

get your shit together. and stop giving your faults a name to blame.

benzos aren't necessarily the best choice
especially not long-term

high chance of abuse coupled with the possibility of memory disorders from long-term use

try something else first

^ how about you read my posts from earlier in this thread before you tell me how to define myself?

bipolar disorder isn't an excuse

Klonopin works wonders for panic attacks. That's probably the one to get over anything else like xanax or ativan.

"Some studies have suggested a significant correlation between creativity and bipolar disorder. However, the relationship between the disorder and creativity is still very unclear.[3][4][5] One study indicated increased striving for, and sometimes attaining, goals and achievements.[6] While the disorder affects people differently, individuals with bipolar disorder tend to be much more outgoing and daring than individuals without bipolar disorder. The disorder is also found in a large number of people involved in the arts. It is an ongoing study as to why many creative geniuses had bipolar disorder."

the worst part about bipolar disorder is battling ignorance

I hate how people stare
and how I can only drink from bipolar water fountains and sit in the bipolar part of the bus

if you don't wanna take meds for anxiety and so forth the best you can do is go to behavioral therapy. the worst you can do is ignore it, because it will get worse and worse as your life progresses.

like i said, you can try klonopin. if you've never taken any of those drugs it's a lot different than an SSRI like lexapro.

therapy is good

if you have a specific anxiety source you can learn to mitigate it

also consider biofeedback therapy to control your physical response to stress
