Harlow is a nice little town, very small.

OK, so I lived at a friend's place in Morehead City for about 6 weeks before we headed to Iraq. I like Morehead--in fact, I prefer it to the other options, but if I buy a house, I don't want to spend very much....as in the $160-170k range, or a little less depending on how much I can negotiate them down. I want a 3 br, 2 bath, and a 2-car garage. Considering that I'll spend a fair amount of time gone over the next few years, and that I might want to keep it as rental property after that, I don't want an expensive house. I don't think I'll find anything in my price range in Morehead/Beaufort without it being a dump, though, or located right next to one.

Newport might be an option...I drove through there on 70 every day, and through Newport proper a few times. Haven't checked the prices too much, though.

I think I can find what I want in New Bern. It's further from the beach, which is a big minus to me, but at least it's closer to Raleigh (all my family is from the triangle area...fuquay-varina and the wake-forest/knightdale area, and dad lives in durham), and closer to my daughter. Also closer to Virginia International Raceway, as I intend to spend a number of weekends doing track days.

Also, most of my friends live in New Bern (not sure why...they all spent enough money to buy a nice house in Morehead, but for some reason, most people seem to like New Bern).

new bern sucks, it's nothing but old people and jews. of course since you're working in cherry point you don't really have much else to choose from.

yeah, Old Bern, I know...but that's the thing. It's the best of what's around, within my constraints.

IMHO, you were in the right direction looking at Harlowe.

If it was me, I would look in the Bettie, Otway, Straits, Harker's Island area. It is a comfortable 20-30 minute commute to the MCAS. Plus you are closer to the water and not in as much as a touristy area as Beaufort and Morehead City. My grandparents have had a place at Harker's Island since the 50's and basically split their time between there and Garner. When I am going down there, I NEVER take 70 through Morehead. It always adds about 30-45 minutes to the trip if I do.

BTW, Harlowe is where Brien Taylor is from. Standout E. Carteret pitcher who was drafted by the Yankees. He messed up his shoulder in a bar fight and never played a season in the bigs. I would not look at moving there if it was me.

^^ Actually, he's from North River, which is different from Harlowe. Harlowe is more near the county line with Craven County and North River is closer to Beaufort coming "the back way".

Both are shit holes bur North River is an order of magnitude shittier.
