Hey a friend of mine has never seen the ocean before and I was thinkin about either taking her down for a day trip or spending the night somewhere. I went to emerald isle alot growing up so I know that area but I wasn't sure if there are any other swanky public access places to view the water

Havent read the thread, but there are alot of good restaurants in Beaufort. Front Street Grill at Stillwater (aka Stillwaters) is my personal favorite. Spouters, Beaufort Grocery, Clawsons, Ribeyes, Sharpies, and Finz are also pretty good places. Amos Mosquitos is a tourist trappy kinda place in Atlantic Beach but it has pretty good food. The Sanitary is a tourist trap with shitty food.Fort Macon is Atlantic Beach is a pretty good public beach access. From there, you have a pretty good view of the harbor and the inlet. Taking a ferry over to Shackeford banks is an option as well. There is nothing over there, so make sure you take a cooler with beverages, sunscreen, that kind of thing. I think you can get a ferry ride over there for ~10 bucks or so. You could also drive to Harker's Island and take a ferry out to Cape Lookout. If you want to spend more $$, the fishing out of that area is awesome.

This thread makes me want to go to Harker's Island...I grew up going there every summer. I love the slower pace of life. My wife and I have actually discussed moving there. Other fun things to do:- If you don't want to take the ferry to the lighthouse, there is a park at the east end of Harker's Island where you can have a picnic and see Lookout really well.- The aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is awesome. We went on opening weekend with my wife's family. I would have loved to spend more time there, but my brother-in-law's attention span is kinda short (being that he is 5 yrs. old).- Early in the afternoon, hang out on the waterfront and see the sportfishers come in with the day's catch. If you haven't already noticed, the reason I love going there is because there isn't much to do other than enjoy the weather and the views.(the weekend before the 4th, my wife and I were down there hanging out with some family at "the Cape" and saw a wedding on the beach. The bride was brought in on a boat right up to the shore.)

^I got married in May at a house on Front St. in Beaufort. The reception was at Beaufort Grocery, and instead of a limo taking us to the reception, we got on the Diamondgirl (a 61' Sportfisher and went down Taylors Creek to the Beaufort Waterfront. It was awesome.

Raps is a pretty good choice, esp. if you are looking for more of a restaurant/bar. Sit at the bar downstairs, order a broiled shrimp burger, profit.
