^ He didn't like a book? This is the first time that's ever happened in the history of mankind?I don't really care what kinds of Christians didn't like the series after reading it: it's the ones who are absolutely rejecting it without doing so (based on misinformed hype) who piss me off.[Edited on December 4, 2007 at 10:30 PM. ^ Me too. At least read the books before you bash them.

I had a librarian at one school today tell me that when she was a teacher she had several complaints a year about the books she had the kids read. Two people complained about "The Devils Arithmetic", which if you do not know anything about it is a book on concentration camps in Nazi Germany and how the Germans seemingly picked the numbers of Jews to be executed at random. It had nothing to do with the devil but the title, but several parents complained. As a librarian she also gets complaints to pull books. On the forms they have to fill out to file a complaint, it clearly states "Have you read this book?" and "What exact sections of the material do you find offensive?" It never gets pass that.

That was so fucking bad it made my head spin.Horrible adaptation, strayed drastically from the book, and basically just sucked all around. They should have called it The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen 2.]

I think they tried to make the plot fit some sort of formula. It didn't work.

I'm sooooo disappointed by how this movie turned out. The only semi religious thing that was said was about 5 or 10 seconds from Ms Coulter and if you hadn't read the books it would make no sense. The acting though. Was very very good. Dakota Blue Richards is a perfect Lyra and Kidman and Craig are awesome as well. Did anyone else pronounce Lyra as ( Leera) as opposed to (Lie-ra) when you read the books? Also did anyone feel like this movie was pretty damn gruesome for PG 13? especially all the killing, even if it was softened up by the golden dust deaths of the daemons. Haha and the ending song! barf.

I usually don't like Nicole Kidman, but I have to admit, she was well picked for this role.
12/9/2007 9:49:56 PM
I definitely pronounced it Lee-ra, not Lie-ra.

You realize that's a fundamental part of the books, right?

Good movie. The song playing during the credits was the worst thing I've ever heard.
12/10/2007 8:23:34 AM
The first book doesn't have quite the level of religious undertones that the latter two do. I completely missed the religious references in Golden Compass when I first read it. To be fair, I was like 12 at the time.

I thought the movie was lame. I don't even know why I went to see this movie. God, I hated this movie more than Harry Potter. The bear fight was lame.
12/13/2007 9:34:09 AM
Blah blah blah *something about religion being bad* blah blah blah blah *magical talking polar bears* blah blah blah...Sounds like a cheesy movie to me But, my wife saw it and thought the polar bears were cool. So, I might go see it.

Dig the books wholeheartedly, movie was just okay. Still enjoyable though. I had good company.

The very end of the first book, when I was talking to my girlfriend about it, was the first time I thought that it could be pronounce Lie-ra instead of Leer-ra as I had been reading it.

The only good part was a bear getting it's jaw knocked off

You know, I hate to be one of 'those' guys - you know, the offended literary fans of a book that gets put on the silver screen, but The Golden Compass was so bad that I nearly walked out of the theater. I read the book in anticipation of the movie because my wife is gaga about the trilogy, and found it a surprisingly complex and neat read. Definitely recommend it.However the movie is a fucking mess! Plot all out of order, events happening totally different just so they can fit under a budget and in a certain time stamp for release....covering up elements of the story from the church, to the danger elements of the book. That's not even to mention the horrible cast and the 'fast food' feel to the story. Just UGH, not good. Those who have read the book but not seen the movie yet....caveat emptor... And if you do go anyway, my god, try to hold your disgust at the ending sequence and what they did with it, and cover your ears up at the song in the end. It's one of the worst songs I've ever heard.
12/16/2007 7:48:25 PM
i enjoyed the movie, i was an avid reader of it back in the day. knowing the books vaguely helps you enjoy the movie a lot more in my opinion. the ending was horribly early though.
12/16/2007 8:47:41 PM
it kinda sucked. i've read the book. the book kinda sucked too.
12/17/2007 9:32:48 AM
i saw it with the SOi mean it was cool to see bears fight eachotherbut other than thatmeh

While I was dissapointed by the movie, there's a Golden Compass video game out now! Has anybody played it?
12/18/2007 9:15:41 AM
Children, I imagine.
12/18/2007 10:08:55 AM
How does one knock a bear's lower jaw off with no blood flying everywhere?I started yelling at the screen when the movie ended, and I stayed until after the credits hoping there would be extra stuff that would off-set the horrible ending.
12/18/2007 12:32:52 PM
you make it a PG-13 movie, that's how
12/18/2007 1:25:44 PM
Unless I miss my guess, blood is allowed in PG-13 movies.
12/18/2007 4:23:23 PM
well, there's a difference between showing a little blood for a wound and a spewing geyser like Kill Bill when she cut people's arms, legs, and heads off.

Just saw the movie and i didn't enjoy it at all (although I do want to read the series now since I'm without Harry Potter and this should suffice). Sam Elliot was the best part of the film. I demand more Sam. I didn't realize how few films he has actually been in.

^^ There is nothing in the movie remotely "anti-Christmas". What are they smoking in the Vatican?
1/4/2008 10:31:39 PM
There is nothing remote anti-Christian in the movie in my opinion...at all. Retards.
1/4/2008 11:01:16 PM
His Dark Materials, as a whole has the anti-Christian theme. The Golden Compass does not get into it much because its simply setting up story.
