Sounds like a brilliant list of techniques. I'll try to remember them. You might even go a little further by removing the breaker to stop them from turning it back on (hope they don't figure out the paper-clip trick). And of course, hide everything outside the apartment, such as at a friends house; if they believe you then they won't waste everyone's time ransaking the apartment.

If they have moved out, then change the locks and find a new tennant (Raige, is it legal to change the locks on a fellow tennant whose name is on the lease?).

They wont cut the cable off, that shit has to be like 3 months late before they cut it off. Since he is never home I doubt he would notice if you had it cut off it would be an inconvenience for you.

If he lets the power get cut off they might require a deposit to turn it back on. That would really suck. I would really try to avoid that if possible. I guess your best course of action on that one would be to get it turned back on in your name if they really turn it off. (Tell them you just moved in or some shit) Then just don't ever give him your money on that bill since he fucked all of you on it.

As far as the rent its definitely a good idea to let your landlord know what is going on. It wont absolve you from any responsibility for it but at least they will know who the culprit is and if you offer them a partial payment they might accept it and continue to call him for it. My GF's ex roomate fucked her on the last three months of rent. She went up there and talked to them and they accepted her half of all that rent and a bunch of fees, then released her from the lease and filed an eviction on the roomate. They did not have to do that but some money is better than nothing so they did.

When your friend signed the lease, did you guys have to have a co-signer? I mean, there has to be SOME documentation to contact his family.

My roommate did this to me sophomore year and I called up his mom. She came down and reamed him out in front of me and our other roommate, and made him apologize to me since all the bills were in my name.

Ha ha I dunno where he goes.. I assume he lives with his girlfriend... But he has a stack of mail a foot high that hasn't been touched...

Also.. I talked to the renting place and they understand... They are more pissed off at him because he hasn't even called them to let them know that he understands that he needs to be out by the end of the month... I tried telling him this

And if he doesn't contact them they will evict him.. which i dunno if that goes on your record.. but honestly I am tired of tryin to take care of his shit and keep him on the ball... its not my responsibility

I don't think he's all that bad... Just not very responsible... I mean he's 23 or 24 and still relies on other people to make sure his shit is taken care of for him. I mean when my mom shoed me off to college, I pretty much had to grow up and figure life out. I have never neglected ANY of my bills...

I had an August->August lease and one of the roomies went home for summer and never came back. The other 3 of us were responsible for the rent but we also kicked in to go to small claims. Never got any $$$ but we did get a judgement to show up on his credit report for 7-odd years.

After 2 months of that I told him he was free to call BellSouth and get his own phone line installed and disconnected all outlets but mine. Every time he complained I threw a quarter his way and told him to go to the corner pay phone.
