you want to see ridiculous, check out Chapel Hill resident (UNC 04 grad) Shalane Flanagan's recent times.
So far this year, she's set new American Records in the 3000m@8:33 (4:35 pace) and the 5000m@14:44 (4:45 pace)

You can see her training out at Umstead sometimes

hell, I can only barely beat out a six minute mile. that's ridiculous. my legs are too damn short and I'm too damn lazy to do any better.

that's not all that fast, actually--i mean, not that i could do it faster, but the winner in most 5k's is atleast under 16

oh no you didn't. NO YOU DI-N'T.

anyway, yeah, I like running but I don't enjoy it. humans were not made to run, at least not well, and that's a fact.

I AGREE...I DON'T "ENJOY" RUNNING AT ALL....I ACTUALLY GET PRETTY BORED....I DO LIKE THE FEELING AFTER I FINISH A RUN BUT THATS ABOUT IT

^^ ok, i guess, but that still doesn't have anything to do with enjoying it. I mean, humans weren't "made" to play video games either, but people seem to enjoy doing that a lot.

^ concerning the "good feeling" that a lot of recreational runners talk about, or runner's high or whatever. I think you'll find that serious, competitive runners don't share those feelings. Someone who runs 10-12 miles a day and does 3 track workouts a week isn't just doing it so they can get a quick rush at the end and feel good about the rest of their day. When I ran, I rarely if ever felt what I would describe as a "runner's high". It was actually the act of running that was enjoyable.

that's an awful analogy, and it's not even correct. humans were made to use tools. a video game controller is one of them. we are pretty good at using our digits to do things.

now, running outdoors... not so much. this is evidenced by our slow maximum speed. I'm not saying humans can't or shouldn't run--and I even think some humans are very good at running, I'm just saying evolution didn't really favor running for us since humans stopped needing to be fast when they came out with tools to do shit for them. and quite frankly, it's pretty damn hard for a human to be good at running, and that's after a ton of practice and training. it's real easy to get hurt, and it's real hard to be fast, though this lends to the fact that people do run: it's automatically competitive. I don't think running fast is very natural, either, but that just might be how we're conditioned either by society or by nature.

and yeah, I dont get a runners high but I do tend to feel a lot better after a run, physically and emotionally.

Anyone racing this weekend? I'm running the Capitol Hill Classic 10K tomorrow. I hate that racing costs so much, but it's hard for me to stay motivated when I don't have a specific goal.

Run a marathon. Much longer build-up. Lower cost per mile raced.
