The only people who say golf isnt a sport are the ones that really suck at it or dont play. Go try to hit a golf ball as hard as you hit a pool ball and see how you do in 18 holes dumbass. Is baseball a sport? Fuck yes it is, but the players sit on their ass for over half of the duration of the game. That doesnt diminish the fact that its a sport.
4/8/2007 7:11:15 PM
^Call it what you want -- it doesn't take any rare physical ability. That's the point the poster earlier was making.Golfers are protected from real competition because the sport is too expensive for most people to do. So, they shouldn't talk a lot of shit about how their skills are elite.

^^you can play lots of sports without rare physical ability. I dont disagree with the rest of your post. The best in the world in any sport have rare physical ability....thats why they're the best. But you can be a sloppy fat ass and play football, you can be short and slow but play basketball....Just as examples...yes the average golfer is not considered an athlete...probably the reason they're not very good at their sport. Can you fish when you're 80? -- yesCan you play billiards when you're 80? --- yesCan you play a round of golf when you're 80? ---yesCan you hit a 90 MPH fastball when you're 80?--- Hell NoMany baseball players are not in the best shape in the world, but it's a sport. It's not a leisure oriented skill game like golf is.(and here's where someone comes in saying 'you try carrying your clubs for 18 holes' --- because Tiger Woods carries his friggin clubs in every tourney. )
4/8/2007 7:46:46 PM
You can still swing a baseball bat the same way you swing a golf club when you're 80. 80 year old golfers suck though...as would an 80 year old baseball player. You just happen to be able to play golf without being powerful...just not well.

Tiger Wood's is the only athelte today that has a video game of his sport named after him, besides bmxing and motocross. DOMINANCE

if baseball is a sport then golf is a sport

10 percent of golfers can consistently break 90. That number is damn low. I'd be willing to bet that 90 percent of the people that shoot in the 70's or better are athletic people. This doesnt mean you have to be in good shape cause there are a few fat bastards that are good at golf. The good ones are usually very athletic people in general though....even the fat ones. I'm just saying...you dont find too many limp wristed people that can consistently play golf in the 80's or better.

Golf isn't a sport because you don't dribble a ball and dunk it in a basket.Tiger is only good because his competition is weak. If they let every hobo that has ever touched a golf club play in the PGA then we'd see who the real golfers were. [Edited on April 9, 2007 at 7:28 AM. Reason : -]

My opinion: a sport has offense and defensebaseball is def a sport, offense and defense are obvious.golf is def a sport, offense is the golfer skills and defense is the course itself.also, good observation that golf only allows the rich in, therefore, we are only seeing a select few in the field. never thought of it that way. i guess, with that argument, tiger may only be average. the real MJ of golf may be in harlem right now, where he will only be average at basketball.
4/9/2007 10:34:19 AM
but that eliminates all varieties of racing (not counting many other things)i think golf is a sport, just not a very athletic one.[Edited on April 9, 2007 at 10:38 AM. Reason : .,]
4/9/2007 10:38:15 AM
^good call on the racing...not much defense in track and field, yet still a sport.

Tiger choked?
4/9/2007 4:35:43 PM
?
4/9/2007 4:56:41 PM
I don't think Tiger choked either. I think Zach Johnson just won the tourney.
4/9/2007 5:08:18 PM
3 birdies in the last 6 holes = winning the tournament. I personally thought Tiger would win if he posted +3...and if Johnson doesnt play out of his mind on the back 9 phil would have put the jacket back on tiger in all likelihood.
