I'm not saying they spent money all day, but I would much rather go to bball practice than go to the office, a school room, etc... I was just using the example of a teacher, if you would like, you may interchange it with whatever career choice you prefer. Why's er' body always pickin on me!

a cap on the amount an athlete can make off of endorsements? that's radical. teachers do not work anywhere near as hard as athletes. as long as people are paying a buck fifty to see agent zero play lebron, they will continue to charge it. welcome to capitalism.

I think it's just ppl don't like to see the black man make money. Noone whines when some guy makes millions for owning shares in a company they don't do shit for.

I don't have a problem with capping salaries for sports teams. As long as the players get a fair share (which is why they have unions). That keeps parity among the league. The league benefits when all teams are on par as far as talent goes. The same doesn't work in a free market economy. The problems with capping salaries in a free market economy are too numerous to discuss in a sports board. But, if you can reach a point where you are no longer financially rewarded for out performing the next guy then where is your motivation to excel? The consumer will always lose out when that happens.

Look, if pro sports had low salary caps like the people here are wishing they had, then multiple things would happen:1. The level of competition wouldn't be as good, the gifted young star wouldn't be as driven to succeed in pro sports, if the pay was down to where some of you want it (below teachers/doctors) they may choose to do something else.Besides, in most professions you can start work in your early twenties and work until you are 70 years old or more. Most athletes can only work until 35-40 maximum, and therefore need to make more money per year in order to live after they retire.2. lower pay for the athletes, who are the ones pouring their sweat and heart out attracting the fans and generating the profits for a sports team, would mean more money for the team owners, who sit on their fat asses and smoke cigars.

What the hell does she teach? The teachers I know go to school around 7:30, get off at 3:30, and grade papers during their planning period. If she is grading papers for 2 hours a day, she needs to be doing way less testing and way more teaching.Half of my family is teachers, and I doubt any of them work as hard as Pro Athletes have to. Not to say it isn't stressful or difficult, but the sheer hours isn't so bad.[Edited on March 29, 2007 at 3:00 PM. Reason : unless she is also coaching something, then I can see it]
3/29/2007 3:00:05 PM
i dont think anybody is dissing on how hard teachers work or the necessity and honorable nature of their workbut i'll bet you when your wife was in high school, she didnt spend every minute of her free time practicing teachingthe other point is that lots of people can study and become teachersALMOST NOBODY can do what Lebron does
3/29/2007 4:32:14 PM
^^ My wife teaches third grade at a VERY low income school. Most of her kids can't even read yet. She spends most of her time trying to figure out how to teach these little illiterate fuckers and then a bunch of time trying to understand how they screwed up their homework so bad. Half of them are illegals and don't speak English at home. And yes she is the high school cheerleading coach too = more timeAnyway I am not arguing that teachers should be paid more than LeBron, but acting like pro athletes work harder than teachers is stupid. Shooting 1000 jump shots after game does not constitute hard work in my opinion. Maybe working out, running, and practicing is work, but it's a lot less stressful work IMO.[Edited on March 29, 2007 at 4:45 PM. Reason : gf]

there are tens of thousands of teachers in this countrythere are dozens of NBA superstars in the worlddevils advocate: grading 20 multiple choice tests isnt hard work eitherobviously her job consists of much, much more than thatbut lebron does much more than just shoot 1000 jumpshots a daylet alone, even though a lot of his work might be less stressful...you cant forget that if nike or sprite or somebody calls and is like "we need you in LA tomorrow morning for this event" he's gotta gocourse both jobs are pretty slack...with your multi-month off-seasons/summers...i get like 2-3 weeks off a year (plus christmas, thanksgiving, etc) [Edited on March 29, 2007 at 4:51 PM. 3/29/2007 4:58:32 PM
^^^ don't ever tell a teacher that they get the summer off. Many teachers especially young ones take up a second job during the summers. What would you rather do - take a private jet to LA for a commercial shoot or grade papers for two hours? Athletes have to keep their bodies in shape and sacrifice their bodies as part of their profession, but there are tons of people who would do that shit for $50 K/yr for a chance to make a living playing sports.Anyway this thread is supposed to be about his ridiculous house, not a lounge topic.[Edited on March 29, 2007 at 5:00 PM. i'd obviously rather jetset to LAmy point was that some of your wife's 60+ hours are RELATIVELY easy...not having to deal with the kids or some of their problemsand some of the NBA lifestyle is easy as well...but not something like going to the FT line down 2 in at the end of a playoff gamei'm not disagreeing with most of what you're saying because i respect teachers and think they're underpaidbut i do think people like to think just because athletes make a lot of money by playing a sport, that that means they dont work hard as much as anybody
3/29/2007 5:01:47 PM
being a pro athlete is just as stressful as being a teacher.....the hours may or may not be comparable....though both jobs are seasonal. not all teachers work 60 hours, actually I'd bet that's a minority. But if your wife doesn't work 60 hours and put in all the extra work, she wont be cut. If you don't work out in the NBA, you lose your job. May be a different kind of stress. pro athletes have the pressure of an entire city, plus family and teammates. Teachers have students that are being forced to be there.^^those teachers CHOOSE to work summer jobs, probably because they are underpaid...or they are bored in the Summer. I was simply replying to the post that suggest athletes do not work as hard as teachers. that's just nuts. Becoming a pro athlete is a life-long struggle. Becoming a teacher is.....But obviously, teachers are way underpaid and think they choose an admirable career path.It isn't about what is more enjoyable.....flying to LA is much more of a sacrifice. grading papers for two hours isn't exactly a special skill. I don't get excited if I see a teacher at the supermarket, but if I see Tim Duncan at Food Lion it would make my day.[Edited on March 29, 2007 at 5:19 PM. Well since this isn't exaclty a ST thread anymore I'll still offer my thoughts. Lebron doesn't work harder than a teacher...he works ten times harder than a teacher. Guess what, just as mentioned with grading papers at home, Lebron lifts weights, does more philanthropic work than 95% of the league (exec's included), is on a plane/airport 12 hours a week, and tries to keep his Mom out of trouble with the law, which is difficult etc etc. Tell you what....Give lebron 12 months to learn how to become a teacher and give a teacher 12 months to become at least a D league player and then see how that turns out???? And for whomever mentioned he is fifth in salary on his team, this is his 4th season, he's maxed out as far as cap goes. Think athletes make too much money, stop going to games and buying their shoes = problem solved. I think the NBA is a joke, but their are obviously some folks that don't and enjoy it, so it's not like Lebron is stealing from others to get his.[Edited on March 29, 2007 at 6:49 PM. Reason : .]
