yeah because all NBA players assault the crowd
3/9/2007 3:45:48 PM
and all NHL players are thugs? Are there assholes playing in the NBA? Yes.Are there assholes playing in the NHL? Yes.

I don't understand how you stooping to the level of the vocal minority of people (who may or may not be hockey fans) calling NBA players thugs has helped anything. You just make yourself look as ignorant as them. There is so much ridiculous shit in this thread on both sides that I don't even know where I would begin if I tried to respond to it all.
3/9/2007 3:57:22 PM
if i make myself look as ignorant as them to people who are rational on both sides, then thats fine with me AS LONG AS i somehow strike a nerve with even one of them and get them to rethink their prejudicesI'm not turning the tables to point out the flaws of hockey to look like a smart fan...but sometimes people dont realize how dumb the stuff they say is unless they hear an equivalent that effects them or something they likeif me saying hockey players are pussies because they wear pads somehow gets one goofball to think to himself "you know what...maybe its innaccurate to label a 450-athlete pro league like the NBA as a bunch of ghetto thugs who fight fans just because of one isolated incident...then i have succeeded[Edited on March 9, 2007 at 4:01 PM. 3/9/2007 3:59:40 PM
The problem is you are striking a nerve with EVERYONE who is a hockey fan, including the people like myself who would have been on your side if you had, say, made a thread dispelling the notion by some that NBA players are thugs.
3/9/2007 4:01:15 PM
again, i'm not doing it for you or the other rational fans...think of me what you will...but
3/9/2007 4:02:06 PM
why is there more attention on the NBA? because of the fact that they receive a shit load more media coverage than the NHL usually...and to be honest theres a lot of media hype on the drama/rivalries of the NBA. Omg Kobe raped a woman? Shaq vs Kobe who wins? Dennis Rodman died his hair today, What color is it? Find out at 10!! etc etc etc. Why is there more media for the NBA?....My guess would be because the media/people can usually associate one player with a team. I'm not saying that one player carries the entire team, but the media hype makes you believe it. The prime example, Shaq with the Lakers, Jordan with the Bulls, etc. Without that one player, those teams wouldn't be as famous. Whereas hockey, its more of a team and most people don't follow one person's stats/life
3/9/2007 4:05:47 PM
When NBA players fight it seems like it's instigated due to a player's pride. When NHL players fight it seems like it's instigated out of comraderie. Then again, that might just be because a number of NBA come off as cocky in interviews, whereas hockey players just never talk to the media.
3/9/2007 4:08:18 PM
NBA players get the "thug" label as much for their off-the-court antics as what they do on the court.Of course prejudices and stereotypes are at play here as well.

I'm just curious though, can anyone who says NHL players arn't labeled as thugs, name more than 10-15 hockey players? I love hockey, I used to play and still follow it constantly, I can easily name a couple players who are thugs/"enforcers" who will sometimes go out on the ice and try to start stuff. The media doesn't really follow it unless you're up north or its something drastic like Jesse Boulerice or Marty McSorley. As far as off the ice? The media never really follows it.For NBA players, the media loves it and while some people rightfully earn their "thug" status, the media will sometimes blow things out of proportion and make things seem worse than they are. Hype is what sells the media.Do NBA players deserve this extra attention when its harmful sometimes? ::shrug:: In my opinion they do, when the average NBA salary is 3.7 million and the average NHL is 1.46 million.
3/9/2007 8:29:42 PM
salary differences definitely matter...higher wages in a sense mean higher responsibility...also since the nba is more worldwide than the nhl they might feel like their players are role models to more, or at least representatives of the league on a wider global scale, i dunno

Simon is suspended for the rest of the season + playoffs.

^^I'm not arguing with what you are saying, but without looking at the numbers I would say the NHL is more worldwide than NBA.

The NHL is the best hockey league in the world, period. While some teams do allow players to stay in their domestic leagues to develop instead of playing in the minors here (Henrik Lundqvist or Evgeni Malkin, for example), every player who can be in the NHL wants to be in the NHL, and people from other countries continue to follow those outstanding players when they arrive here.

By the way, which nation does the N in NHL stand for anyway?

Except that Bertuzzi is rolling into the playoffs with a #4 seed (and very possibly a #1).
