^^ Palmer was great, no doubt, but the amount of golfers competing to just be on the tour is staggering. I mean, I am scratch and can break 70 if I play for a few weeks straight from time to time, but I wouldn't even consider playing for money. The level of comepetition nowadays is stagggering and there is little difference between the guys. That's what makes Tiger's accomplishments that much more astounding.

what I'm saying is in Jack's day, there were only about 8 guys with a legit shot at winning a tournament. now, there are at least 3 times that number that have that chance to win a tournament.

Yeah, I have been screwing TW is his own game too. At first I was like "ohh shit i just beat TW on his own game" and then I was like "ohh shit this is too easy" and now i'm like "fuck this."

I'd also be willing to bet that people like Palmer and Trevino had 100x the clutch factor that some overrated choker like Mickelson hasSo I agree that the field in general is better...but I don't think the Top 10 is nearly as goodIMO aside from Tiger and Vijay...you've just got a bunch of people who havent lived up to their hype

beergolftile is correct....as good as Arnie was in his era I have my doubts that he would be able to compete to win any majors against these guys.....I think the best thing to do is to say he (arnie) was great for his era. Lets be clear though.....No one from any era (in my opinion) could match Tiger.

its difficult to compare athletes from different eras but i think in most sports, guys were at least perceived to be tougher back in the day...and a lot of golf is about mental toughness down the stretch

There is no way to compare athletes of different eras against each other - but you can examine them against their era's competition. Tiger plays against the largest potential pool of talent in years. For every guy you see playing on tour, there are 1000 that are within a putt per round of being there too. The difference between the good and the great is at an all time low. To accomplish what Tiger has done is remarkable, and I will have to say he's probably the best ever for a 10 year period (and unless he breaks his leg, will probably be the best all time)
