There is a lot of "shine through" as you so eloquently put it because of the fundamental operation of an LCD. The darkest you can get is the crossed value of the two polarizers times the back light brightness (assuming perfect operation of the liquid crystal). It doesn't take a brain child to logically conclude any light times a 98% “light block” filter (polarizers) is going to net some visible light during "black letterbox bars". Go to any forum you want, type in any settings you find into your LCD TV. Until you turn off the back light entirely you're going to be faced with reality. On a side note : D-ILA projectors are dirt cheap because they use 500$ xenon bulbs which last 1000 hrs. Something you would know about if you had any clue about front projection (which you don't). I'm not trying to tell you the LCD tv you paid for was not good. It just has the worst black level of every other TV technology available.
