I have to side with Duke here - I make close to $100k now (will with bonus)...I would guess I probably "feel" about $1k more a month than I did as an officer in the Navy, even thou I was just a little over $60k back then. It's amazing what tax breaks can do for you...when I was in San Diego I was getting ~$1500 a month tax free for housing, was a resident of Florida so I didn't pay state taxes, had no loans as the academy was free. Not to mention tax free deployments, being away from home a lot.Looking back, I should have been a consultant right out of MBA. I figure in 6 months I'd probably have $20-30k in the bank...traveling and being reimbursed for everything kicks ass. I'll probably look at consulting after my time here at the depot...just wanted a working life where I didn't have to travel all the time for a couple of years.

^ word up, you're at the depot. how long you been there? i have a few good friends from b-school that interned there last summer...

I really should have done business.

^No degree guarantees you 100k+ a year.

i just got lucky with my job - I'm in somewhat of a niche job - heav statistics with strong marketing knowledge and some finance. it's not what I went to b-school expecting to do (planned on operations), but had an awesome teacher for decision sciences/forecasting/etcanyway, been at the depot for about 7 months now. it's been an interesting ride to say the least (especially coming here from the military). we've had layoffs, tanking stock, rebounding stock, a CEO essentially fired, struggling thru a housing slump, etc. If I didn't absolutely love my job and have an awesome boss, I probably would have gotten scared off a couple months ago. working for a company that is in the Fortune 15 (we seem to move between 13 and 15 depending on what group you ask) has it's pluses and minuses. But it's a great resume builder, especially considering I want to eventually get my PhD and teach in an MBA program.and partial is right...there are plenty of people who make less than I do coming out of B-School. It all depends on what you like to do. Hell, you could bank a couple hundy doing investment banking, but you'd have close to no life on the weekends and certainly none on weekdays.end of words [Edited on February 7, 2007 at 8:08 PM. i guess in your world people don't pay taxes although i do think it's possible ]

Well, at least in part, the 50k thread was gross so I just assumed people were talking about grossing 100k here.I live in an area of the country that is equally as expensive as NYC (Bay Area) and work with a few people who live comfortably in downtown SF in a $2.5k/month 1BR apartment on $85k/yr net though fwiw.[Edited on February 8, 2007 at 5:12 PM. Reason : though i don't imagine too many people, if any, are grossing 100k that are on tww]

I ain't gonna lie, it irks me a teeny amount (only a teeny amount) knowing people in sales make so much money for such little brain power they put in to it.
2/8/2007 5:16:23 PM
right - so the difference is that the thread is about making 100k - which is almost always talked about in terms of gross paywhereas you are talking about spending money - which is never talked about in pre-tax dollars

^^ I'm a moron.. I was working on some stuff at work while I was typing and pretty much reversed everything I was trying to say since I wasn't thinking. Just pretend I didn't post anything in this thread.. though it is completely possible to comfortably live in Manhattan on a 100k salary.[Edited on February 8, 2007 at 6:23 PM. Reason : lol.. i really do know net versus gross ]

what in fuck are you smoking that 2400/mo place is do-able?5k a month with 40k extra? Dude you're only netting ~5k a month if you're making 100k
2/8/2007 11:44:18 PM
Like I said. I was in a conference call and wasn't paying attention hardly at all when I posted that. I had just read a post in the 50k thread (a few down) about people who net 50k and had 100k net income in my mind (even though what I typed was wrong).Still there are plenty of people who can live off of a 100k salary in Manhattan or in San Francisco, both safely and comfortably.

I can't find any 1 bdrm apts in Manhattan for less than $1500 below 100th st, and I'd rather stay in Queens than live that high up. Plus for that $1500/month you only get around 400-600sq ft.Looks like I'll be having a roommate till I make $100k
2/9/2007 1:31:44 PM
you don't need 100k to afford 1500 a monthat 75K you take home around 4K a month, 1500 is very doable
2/9/2007 1:40:06 PM
^What sort of cheating on your taxes do you have to do to take that home?
2/9/2007 11:48:35 PM
^^haha, I'm not talking about affording 1500/month apt on 100k, I"m talking about doing it on my current salary ^seriously. I already pay close to 25k in taxes and I'm nowhere near 100k, lol.
2/10/2007 12:28:52 PM
4K * 12 months = 48k48k/75k = 36%36% is a pretty high fucking tax rate, I claim 2 and never pay more than about 32%

I believe he lives in NYC, which has a municipal income tax as well.
2/13/2007 4:13:01 PM
^&^^when I was filling out my taxes, as soon as I clicked "resident of NYC" my state tax refund went from + $13xx to -$25.To give you an idea...lol.
