Before I proposed I took my girlfriend to a few diamond stores and had her pick the diamond and the ring style. She's going to be wearing it, so I figured who better to pick it out than her. I even bought the ring in front of her. We ended up buying from Jared's. They were hands down the best option for us in the Charlotte area.
2/3/2007 8:33:06 AM
oh god. I can't imagine that a Kay's brand retailer is going to be the best option in Charlotte, the queen city.why does everyone feel the overwhelming need to buy jewelry from mall stores? le sigh....
2/3/2007 8:35:59 AM
After you buy it, does it really matter that much where it came from, as long as you are happy with it?
2/3/2007 8:54:01 AM
no, as long as it didn't come from a mall storebecause if you're happy with that shit, then god help you

Not to distract from the bickering, but you might want to try CMI Jewelry on Capital (north of 540 just past the Infiniti store). Great service and competitive prices. Call them first so they know you are coming, they have to buzz you in.As far as what to get her, unless you are very aware of her tastes & preferences, you might want to either get her a really basic setting and tell her she can have it remounted with what she likes (CMI will help you out here), or if you are brave just give her a loose stone. My cousin is married to a jeweler and he was really nervous about getting her the right thing, so he did the loose stone thing. She was thrilled.Good luck & hope to be congratulating you soon!
2/3/2007 10:21:33 AM
yep good advice - you can get really cheap (<$100) temporary settings from most reputable jewelers, or at least a very nice display box in which to put the loose diamond when you proposejust make sure she doesn't open it and drop the diamond off the romantic bridge you propsed to her on[Edited on February 3, 2007 at 10:32 AM. haha i really like 8= = = = = =D 's posts in this thread. I can tell he's really slicing through most of the BS that the diamond industry puts out there. I really appreciate his abrasiveness, thats how I can tell the guy knows what he's talking about.I also think QTPie sounds like a great salesman (or saleswoman whatever). Shes even patient with people who she has nothing to sell to (like 8 = = = = = D).If you're in the market for an engagement ring I want you to think about something.A lot of guys fall into the trap of thinking its "just a ring" or that its "a big fucking waste of money"Well here's the thing. To a girl a ring is not a ring. A ring is a penis. Girls look at other girls rings and they think "wow thats a really big penis" kinda like guys look at porn and think "damn i wish i had one of those really big penises".The main difference is that at least guys get to hide their inadequate penises in their pants and then strut around pretending they have a big one.A girl cant hide her penis. She has to wear it ouside her pants on her wrist. She's not going to be happy about displaying a small penis for the rest of her life. One other thing to think about is this. If a girl has a huge ring (or penis) then guys are 100x less likely to hit on them. Guys are intimidated by girls with big penises (we're talking about rings here still) and they dont hit on them. Giving a girl a big ring (esp. if you dont have a big penis yourself) is a great way to keep her from slutting it up.

The size or quality or whatever didn't matter to me.What mattered was that Jeff took the time to find out my taste and what I really wanted in a ring I'll wear everyday for the rest of my life...I couldn't have asked for anything better and it was <$3,000

I'm glad I'm not yet at the point of proposing but I think many people just forget what the ring is all about. Who is the person you love. What would SHE want. This isn't about how much it costs or what it looks like as far as you are concerned. The wonderful woman I'm dating now would be pissed off if I got her a huge rock. That's just not her. I seriously doubt she would wear it since she works in streams and chem labs most of the time. The ring should embody your love and her dream of a beautiful ring. Take that approach and listen to QTPIE and you'll be okay.

The size/price of a ring shouldn't matter...unless you're a cheapss bastard like my ex-roomate. He tried to get his girl a pawn shop ring. Then went to the mall and got her a $600 POS (You can actually see a shadow in the stone) and then bought himself a new car a few weeks later.Just weak. Just make sure it looks nice, you tried your best, and that you put some thought into it.

expensive - you can get a custom jeweler to replicate one for cheaper - unless you are pretentious enough to care about the name
2/5/2007 11:47:57 AM
i agree with omarbadu

My fiance loved the ring that I got herHowever she would have been just as happy with a ring that cost 20 bucks. Her parents however like the ring and it shows to them that we're serious about the whole thing...so the ring is also for the parents

ok, what are you going to buy as an investment diamond? IF clarity, D color? good luck selling thatprofit margins are incredibly small on diamonds at the retail level so good luck undercutting those prices (which you will have to do, since you're selling it independently)"investment" generally means appreciating saleable value.[Edited on February 5, 2007 at 6:58 PM. ^Semantics difference/misunderstanding. I agree with your points. I was referring to a diamond ring as a long-term sentimental investment, not a long-term financial investment.Anyways, QwertyRox, any further thoughts at this point?
