i mean, really, it's between simms, burke, beck and wilson. if evans is still in that race, then i'm going to be disappointed in the quality of these qbs we're bringing in.i can't help but feel bad for these guys who may have to ride the bench for four years, though.
1/23/2007 2:29:08 PM
Yeah. I guess giving Amato the axe also pretty much gave Evans the axe too.I agree that it will suck for whoever ends up warming the bench for 3+ years between our top 3/4, but ya gotta admit ~ only a few of the top QBs coming out of HS acutally pan out to their expectations in college ball. Odds are that most of (if not all) of those guys on that list arent gonna be able to get the job done like we would like to think they will....Then again, maybe we will be blessed with a Rivers-esque presence again.... I hope so.
1/23/2007 2:36:45 PM
this is what espn insiders says about matt simms:
1/23/2007 2:38:32 PM
sounds eerily similar to priv
1/23/2007 2:52:55 PM
Great, another Jay Davis...^no, Rivers is 6'5" with a low release, and he had great touch on deep balls when he threw them(granted, which wasnt often) I dont know where the fuck you people are getting the idea that this Simms kid can come in and beat out two highly touted quarterbacks for the starting job, both of whom have been practicing against college defenses for at least a year, two for beck. The battle for the starting job next year WILL include Justin Burke, Harrison Beck, and Daniel Evans, just because evans was the starter last year. He has no chance though. THe only reason Wilson can play his freshman year is if he moves up the depth chart and Burke AND Beck get injured. Beck has a cannon FWIW, and won his only two starts at nebraska....and Burke threw 62 touchdowns passes and around 8 interceptions as a senior in high school.[Edited on January 23, 2007 at 2:57 PM. i don't know how the fuck any one of us can say how anyone will be in our offense and in the college game until we see it. Stop over-analyzing, trust our coaches and wait for the product on the field.
1/23/2007 2:58:43 PM
^ EXACTLYwhich is why i say unless somebody absolutely blows the coaching staffs mind in practice, lets see how evans does with a year of starting under his belt with a new coaching staff.
1/23/2007 3:04:02 PM
^Wrong.Beck is already > Evans. Both have played college ball and can be compared. Evans simply is not the guy to take us to the next level, it's obvious. The kid has a ton of heart and I'm grateful for what he did for us last year, but there's a reason he wasn't a highly touted recruit and it shows.Beck is the real deal, we know that, and Burke has potential, but we don't know how he can handle college ball.
1/23/2007 3:08:07 PM
^^ really wrong... lets get a new QB in their that can get used to playing college and get a lot of years of play, like priv.if Evans starts... below .500 season[Edited on January 23, 2007 at 3:22 PM. Reason : .]
1/23/2007 3:22:13 PM

^ as much as i'm on the burke/beck bandwagon, you may be giving amato too much credit here.
1/23/2007 3:32:28 PM
lol
1/23/2007 6:42:37 PM
run the 2qb system where stone+wilson=tebow
1/23/2007 6:47:12 PM
^ that would be a 3 qb system.
1/23/2007 6:48:42 PM
lets just rotate our QBs for every down, let them all get a chance to screw up
1/23/2007 6:53:04 PM
^nah we dont roll like that now that Chuck is gone, at least I hope it doesent come to that.I still think that any of those QBs has a chance to be the starter, but I cant see TOB luring Simms away from L'ville unless he offers him a true freshman start.... (Assuming we can actually lure Simms away, that is...) He may not be exactly like Priv coming outta HS, but ya gotta admit theres similarities and potential that we all would like to see playing for us.I think using Wilson every 10 downs as a run threat would be badass; I mean we should have some talent at QB on the bench, right?
1/24/2007 12:54:48 AM
i would like t osee beck/burke in a 2 qb system

1/24/2007 9:55:23 AM
1/24/2007 10:09:52 AM
am I the only one that wants to see what burke can do? he was pretty damned good in high school and we already know what evans can do. evans was the man for stepping in like he did, but lets be honest, is he gonna help us win games or just be a "game manager." I say try to develop a QB that will help us win.
1/24/2007 10:31:50 AM
Burke might be good who knows. He will have this pre-season to prove what he has. I remember people saying how great Stone was going to be coming out of PA. There is a learning curve and athletic bar that is rasied when you move to the next level. Alot of times great high school players can't adjust to the curve and the bar.
1/24/2007 10:45:23 AM
^ I also remember ppl saying how dumb Stone was in addition to how strong he was. I've heard similar, but unfounded, things about Harrison Beck. All I've heard about Burke is that he has the kind of mind that could actually run a Trestman offense (which none of our QBs did a remotely good job at doing). I wonder if our new OC has a more simple offensive scheme? I honestly did not pay too much attention to BCs play calling and sets (I was drunk as hell that game )
1/24/2007 12:01:17 PM
With 3 QBs already in place, I would venture to say that Wilson will be redshirted this year. Then next year, wow, 4 Qbs, Evans-Sr., Beck-Jr., Burke-So., Wilson-Fr.
1/24/2007 12:09:00 PM
personally, i want to see what beck can do, much moreso than burke.
1/24/2007 1:04:27 PM
eh, I'm a little skeptical of what happened at Nebraska with Beck still, so I'd rather see Burke first. However, either of the two will be fine.
1/24/2007 2:14:38 PM
yeah , what happened with hima nd Nebraska anyways?
1/24/2007 5:40:34 PM
i believe the story was that he was hurt and missed spring drills, then came into practice and was listed 3rd on the depth chart (after he was forced to burn his redshirt at the end of the previous season), so he transferred.
1/24/2007 6:04:51 PM
He won his only two starts though...beat Michigan in the bowl game. Still sounds sketchy, I'm not sure he missed spring practice, but I cant remember exactly how it happened.
1/24/2007 6:21:13 PM
by spring drills, i mean the player-run "voluntary" practices. that's how i remember it, anyway. very possible i'm wrong.
1/24/2007 6:36:27 PM
I have no link or proof, but....A buddy of mine works at Damon's and said he saw Andre Brown up there very recently.Apparently, Mr. Brown has inside knowledge that Matt Simms will verbally commit to NCSU and was bragging that he will announce this switch from L'ville within the next two weeks.Take that for what you will... I understand the skepticism will be there but I had to say something....
1/25/2007 12:03:37 AM
^ can only hope you are right
1/25/2007 12:58:58 AM
I'd rather have beck and burke than simmsif that espn insider column is correct.

^Nice.Well it looks like Simms is probably gonna come to NCSU The big question I have is will Red Tom red shirt him or will be be a true freshman starter?
1/25/2007 1:03:33 PM
^ lol let's not jump to too many conclusions here.
1/25/2007 1:10:10 PM
well, espn insider, cnn-si, and Andre Brown say he's coming to NCSU at least.....Thats enough for me to jump to a conclusion, I mean this isnt a coaching search or anything....
1/25/2007 1:13:30 PM
^^nice article
1/25/2007 1:13:46 PM
based on the offer sheet harrison beck had when he committed to Nebraska, he must have some potential and it will probably be b/t he and Burke for starter next year w/ beck playing imo
1/25/2007 1:58:31 PM
so that'd make 4 quarterbacks who came here with the idea that they'd get to play (if simms comes). =(i hope there's no early resentment on the team towards anyone.edit: ^ /agree. i've been saying for a while i think it'll be beck. i HOPE it's beck, i don't want another qb who doesn't have the arm/touch to get it done, run a simpler offense if you have to.[Edited on January 25, 2007 at 2:02 PM. 1/25/2007 1:59:55 PM
I have heard both about Beck, some say he is bright and others say he is notBut I just have a hard time believing that Callahan would recruit a dumb qb knowing how complex his own system is.I would like to add an amend mum to my Beck prediction however. Because this is NCSU and we never get what we want as sports fans, TOB will prob. start Evans b/c he beat TOB last year when he was at BC so he has to be awesome [Edited on January 25, 2007 at 2:06 PM. Reason : .]
1/25/2007 2:04:53 PM
Beck's problem won't be his IQ/brightnessHis problem may be how he ended up here in the first place.....because his mother bitched that he didn't get enough playing time at Nebraska.Could be a clash coming
1/25/2007 2:06:42 PM
At one point I think Justin Burke had over 60 offers too. I think Jumping to conclusions would be stating that Simms might start as a true freshman. I know a few guys that worked for the team last year that said Burke was the best quarterback we had...LAST year. No way in hell, as I've said before, that this n00b gets the nod over Burke and Beck. Maybe if they both suck it up fora few games, but no way he comes into the season even close to being the starter.
1/25/2007 2:14:10 PM
1/25/2007 2:16:58 PM
1/25/2007 2:48:22 PM
^dont have Simms yet
1/25/2007 3:30:56 PM
I still think that logic is flawed considering you have two quarterbacks who have been in college for one and two years ahead of this kid. He might be great, but you cant tell me that in august practice that this kid will come in more poised than Burke and Beck as well as knowing the playbook better. If TOB knows whats good for him he'll start one of the two guys our fans have been waiting a year to see, then make a decision after they win or lose some games.
1/25/2007 3:36:27 PM
^I agree, and if Simms were to come here, I don't think he would or should start his first year, but I just want to bring up the point that it's going to be a new playbook and a new system. Short of playing time and game experience (which neither Burke or Beck has), most of the players will be "starting from scratch." Just a thought.
1/26/2007 10:52:53 AM
If Simms is better then He should get to start. The best player should start. You don't start a sophmore over a freshman and expect to replace the starter the next year. Once you decide on a QB you will go with him until it breaks. It depends on if Simms can handle the system and learn everything he needs to.
1/26/2007 11:03:02 AM
^No way man! we started Rivers as a Freshman, and look how that turned out!! I doubt we'd make that mistake again.[Edited on January 26, 2007 at 11:12 AM. Reason : *forgot to add heavy sarcasm disclaimer to avoid flamage*]
