Don't think psp is a failure either...http://www.dailytech.com/Official+Holiday+Sales+Figures+Rank+New+Consoles+Xbox+360+Wii+PS3/article5687.htmanother failure:laser disc
1/14/2007 3:59:44 AM
so to summarize:the PSP has sold half again as many units as the xbox 360HD-DVD sales have been flat for the last quarter while bluray has a strong upward growthbluray is expected to have twice as many units in the market this year than HD-DVDyeah, sony has really fucked up big time

I also feel that the PSP is not only not a failure, but one of the few things that Sony has done right. It could still be better, but it really doesn't have any serious competition. the nintendo DS is solely a gaming machine, while the PSP can do a lot more (I own neither). Blu-ray may currently sell better than HD-DVD, but in the end, the proprietary format will lose.

I may be mis-remembering, but didnt one of the major DVD selling retail chains return all the blu-ray dvd stocks they had because they 1. weren't selling and 2. were shitty movies that no one would ever buy anyway?
1/14/2007 9:03:52 AM
HD-DVDs flaw is that their players are made solely by toshiba. Sooner or later the proprietary comment gets pointed back at its origin.

^ which, i suppose, isn't THAT big of a difference when you're talking about that much money...but $200 is still a lot of EXTRA to spend when you're paying $40/movie anyway
1/14/2007 6:20:25 PM
All sony has to do to win this war is make sure that it has way more movies out in blue ray than hd-dvd when everyone starts getting hd tv's. It doesn't matter which one is better b/c most consumer to dumb to know which one is better. Also i thought it was funny that sony ps3 has sold more than xbox 360 in japan

good call quinn...Amazon has falsely advertised that model with the title "LG HD DVD Player (LGDVB418)" leading us to believe that it is an HD-DVD player when it is in fact a standard def DVD player with 1080i upconversion for regular DVDs. See:http://us.lge.com/products/model/detail/tv|audio|video_digital%20video__LGDVB418.jhtml[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 12:17 AM. Reason : fix linky]

ok, i stand corrected, I just got that off a google hit, and didn't read it closely.
1/15/2007 9:26:49 AM
this is a serious question.... HD-DVD pundits seem always point to the 'fact' that HD-DVDs are cheaper as an advantage... There doesn't really seem to be a price difference.Example: Super Returns... it's actually 3 bucks cheaper on Blu-Ray. what the deal?
1/15/2007 9:36:48 AM
Costs more for developers. Its then their initiative what to charge the consumer. They may be lowering the Blu-ray price for consumers hoping that it catches on to beat out HD.

wow Sonyway to drop the ball on this one
1/15/2007 11:00:57 AM
of course they're on an upward trend because they just hit the market. but that upward trend has caught HD-DVD which had sustained sales before the PS3 hit.and people can blah blah all they want about PS3's. Sure there are shots of stacks of them in some stores. But anyone with any retail experience knows this is the slowest time of the year, especially in consumer electronics (save for big TV's at the Super Bowl). And it's not like the 360 was a gangbuster at xmas - there were so many stacks in every best buy I went into that it just became ho-hum.
1/15/2007 1:49:18 PM
As people adopt HDTV (over the next 10 years), a lot of them will come home w/their brand spanking new HDTV and think to themselves "OK, now to get some HD content".First they will call their cable company to get the HD hookup. Then they will look right underneath/beside their TV and (most likely) see the PS3 sitting there and think "hey, can't I stick one of them blu-ray thingamajiggers in there for HD movies???"this, my friends, is how blu-ray will win.
1/15/2007 2:32:59 PM
yeah... the next wave xbox 360 will have one too (hd dvd that is)and honestly i think the current ps3 owners have HD already being that they purchased a 5-6 hundred dollar console.... one would think they could spare 1k for a tv.[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 2:36 PM. Reason : .]
1/15/2007 2:35:22 PM
you're right, the current owners probably do.But as the price drops and the mainstream games come out, millions and millions of joe-consumers will pick one up.
1/15/2007 2:36:23 PM
true...
1/15/2007 2:37:15 PM
Honestly i bet both will be in use, unless sony really shoots themselves in the foot. Like blue ray will be for the rich ppl who want the high quality, and hd-dvd for the ppl who dont care

Analog TV will be cutoff in 2 years. I don't think its too far fetched for the cable companies to use that extra bandwidth for an ultra high speed HD movie downloading service. Storage space is cheap as balls, I can go buy a TB for under 300 bucks today. By 2010 we could all be getting 40 Mbps down/up for the same price or cheaper than we are paying today for 5 Mbps/256 Kbps down/up. Do you really think either HD-DVD or Blu-ray will be that established by then?
1/15/2007 5:12:13 PM
i don't see HD dvd being all that "open" either though....UMD died b/c they didn't allow recordable versions of it for some stupid reason.....
1/15/2007 5:52:38 PM
dvd's are going to be around for a long time. Yeah memory is cheap but not cheaper than the cost of a dvd. Also there are to many ppl who want to keep the movies they pay for. Also look at the music industry yeah now we have mp3's but still cd's are the main storage[Edited on January 15, 2007 at 6:07 PM. Reason : .]

hd-dvd will winblu-ray is dependent on ps3 which has been a huge disappointment. microsoft has continually improved the 360 and it will become a media center in most living rooms. there is a reason that ps3 was the ONLY console not to exceed sales targets (wii and 360 both exceeded over christmas). check out some excerpts from http://www.redherring.com/Article.aspx?a=20745&hed=PS3+Sales+Could+Fall+Short§or=Industries&subsector=EntertainmentAndMedia

As far as PSP goes I was mainly reffering to the video disks, not the games, as being a format that didn't seem to get big. Then again I don't know what the actual statistics are, just an observation. Too lazy to do the research i guess.
1/15/2007 8:38:55 PM
Who the fuck wants to pay the same for a low quality DVD with no extras that you can only watch on a 3 inch screen?
1/16/2007 12:06:36 AM
hd dvd vs blu-ray sorta depends on 3 thingsthe new grand tourismoa new grand theft autoand halo 3
1/16/2007 12:18:57 AM
The reason UMD's died is because it was just as easy, and free (aside from the cost of a memory stick), to load video files onto a memory stick and watch them on the PSP. Why buy a UMD when you can just bootleg and load it up for cheaper.
