8GB is more than any nano out though, so I imagine it'll still be more than enough for most people.

"Would it be possible for a draft-n device to be made in such a way that a firmware update could make it compatible with the ratified n standard?"

it all depends on what changes in the final standard. Broadcom gambled on this with 802.11g, and was able to make it fully compliant via firmware. But IEEE is scheduled to fully ratify 802.11n in April 2008. So there's the possibility that the difference btw pre-standard 802.11n and the eventual IEEE standard will require chip level changes, which can't be addressed via firmware.

5 hours of play/talk time - most phones on the market are at that level if not lower - with a few days in standby....i doubt this phone will see a lot of standby for the first month at least from most users

499 and 599 $$

The 5hr batt life is for the bluetooth headset talk time.

The phone has 16 hours for music, and like 2day standby time.

yeah 5 hours of talk/play time is impressive, actually, considering everything that thing does

i plug mine in everynight anyway, so as long as it's good for about 12-14 hours, I'm usually straight

man, seriously, they've got Google *AND* Yahoo apps on the phone, and both head honchos on the strage...how in the world do you convince Google and Yahoo to work together? that alone is amazing

the backorder list for this thing will be in the millions

I can safely imagine these being hotter than the PS3 at midnight on Nov 19th

EDIT: $599 WITH a 2 year contract is mofo rediculous, but completely expected. That phone will run you a cool grand outside of contract.

and exclusive w/ Cingular, which means they have the phone world at their mercy - they can charge whatever rates they please...booooooooo, we need multiple carriers

Actually I just realized that June is the earliest I can get a new phone without breaking my current contract anyways. So I guess it's not the end of the world.

It's GSM which means any GSM service will work... but you'd have to pay full price.

^ auto sense orientation, make lights come on when you pick it up, and probably other things too.

You can play Wii with it!

Who said anything about a contract? It says nothing about that on Engadget... just $599 outright.

I'm hoping to get into NC State's MBA program for this fall, and if I do, I get to relocate back to Raleigh from WV - if you relocate, you can get out of phone contracts, so my Alltel is most likely going out the window if I end up (hopefully) back in Raleigh

still tho, 600 bones + tax for a freaking phone is ouch

It's a full multi-touchscreen video playing iPod with a fullblown wifi internet browser too though, as well as apparently running some variant of OS X (which might mean lots of 3rd party apps available?).

haha, that sucks Bobby I just bought my smartphone like 5 months ago, I feel ya

and whoever said it's a full blown iPod in a phone, wrong-o. This thing is SO far from being an iPod. Shove a 30+GB hard drive in there, and now you have an iPod. Guess how many flicks you can hold on 8GB? Not many.

The HDD size limitation is huge in my mind...sure, trendy teens won't care, but it needs massive amounts of storage to be used like they're saying.

If not, then show me a widescreen iPod that just does iPod things. Still can't believe Apple is using these antiquated iPods...seriously

with proper compression 8gigs is plenty of space.

So the Nano isn't an iPod?

You're right about 8GB and movies though.

They really should have a slightly fatter version of this phone w/ a 20 or 30GB (at least) drive in it.

If 8GB was enough, no one would buy 80GB iPods.

My point is this: if Apple isn't putting a big HDD in the iPhone, cool.

But unveil a widescreen iPod to compensate...seriously, it makes no sense other than "one more thing" would've been too much and potentially stolen some of the limelight

i think they made it too thin, it doesn't look like it would be very comfortable to use as a phone, they should've made it a little thicker and given it longer battery life and more storage capacity

i'll probably still buy it though

I'd just like to point out once again to Bobby that Apple is on the draft-802.11n bandwagon

at store.apple.com - brand new AirPort Extreme Router - draft-802.11n compliant

NEVER doubt the media. We have our sources

edit: spooky, he said full blown iPod - it's not. It's a nano. It's not an iPod, it's an iPod nano at best.

^ That also doubles as a file and print server too, fyi.

Look at the new iPod browsing interface, I predict this is released for regular ipods within the next 6 months (maybe in June?).

wow. I'm seriously considering buying this phone.

To me, 8gb is fine. I bring my iPod with me and use it in the car/at work/etc, I don't need a phone for that.

What I DO need the phone for is syncing with my mac without lots of hassle/etc. I want to see iChat on here as well as the text feature they have, then I'll be sold.

On second thought, I'm sold already, iChat would just be a nice addition (unless it already has iChat on it?).

As soon as I can afford the phone + associated increased monthly bill, I'm down with this.

<3 this new product!

any specifics on the apple tv? I've been looking for a replacement for my xbox with xbmc. I'd like to know if it had a drive of any sort and how open the OS on it is. As well as if I could get a less gay remote that I wouldnt lose

Seems a little tall maybe... as long as it fits in my pocket alright I won't mind though.

"Built-in Advanced Sensors
iPhone’s accelerometer detects when you rotate the device from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display, so you immediately see the entire width of a web page or a photo in its proper landscape aspect ratio.

The proximity sensor detects when you lift iPhone to your ear and immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches until iPhone is moved away.

An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, thereby enhancing the user experience and saving power at the same time.

^^ It has a HD, but as of now, it's not an open platform. It only interoperates with iTunes out of the box, which means H.264 video and mp3/aac/wav audio.

It'll probably take a while before people hack it, or Apple releases and SDK.

It also uses an IR remote, so any universal remote should be programmable for it.
