i love the horror genre...prob my favorite...but can't get my wife or friends to ever watch with me which is actually better so i can turn down the lights and not be disturbed...i'm always looking for the next best movie to rent/buyi have no real preference over which type my taste is pretty broad, here are some i can recount prob not all considered "Horror" some "Thriller"Disturbing controversial movies I watch simply to see the fuss, but they are quite dull only there to shock (e.g. cannibal, salo, last house on left, pink flamingos).Gore movies are good for entertaining (e.g. tcm, braindead, evil dead, dotd series, hill have eyes) but they are a dime a dozen.I like the old stuff because they don't rely on special effects (e.g. rosemary baby, changeling, suspiria, wait until dark, marathon man).Intelligent films are good too (e.g. what lies beneath, identity, joy ride, cube, saw, donnie darko).Foreign is good to see what other cultures produce (e.g. ring, grudge, eye, audition, ichi, battle royale).Directors I like: Steven King (storm of century, stand, IT), cronenberg (brood, scanners), lynch, john carpenterSome memorable ones growing up: Halloween, Fright Night, ANOES, Gremlins (lol), some movie where things in a wax museum started livingSome of the movies mentioned in this thread:Hostel - thought was stupidDog Soldiers - loved it, prob one of my fav "animal" horror flicksDescent - has been in my queueCave, Omen Remake, Wicker Man remake - never had inclination to watch these...i also hate that they are making so many remakes....i did see wicker man the original one and it was interesting to say the leastShaun - YES...28 days NOEvent Horizon - i plan to rewatch again tomorrow...b/c one of the more scarier onesDon't Look now - has been in my queueDeliverance - I second everything Pyro said great movie about survival, the bango song always sticks in my mindSilent Hill - not interested, don't like video game horror most of time cheesy (see also Resident Evil)I would say from what I can recall, these are some that roll to the top: The Exorcist, The Thing, Joy Ride (thought was gonna be cheesy turned out great), Identity, Devils Rejects, Final Destination stuff (entertaining), High Tension (one of my fav actually gave me chills highly recommend). So far this week I've (re)watched resident evil (hated it), american werewolf in london (nice!), and NOTLD/Dawn/Day even ROTLD. ROTLD was simply silly. NOTLD was the best, most original. Day had the best gore. Dawn was slow just like the blue faced zombies.Tomorrow i'll rewatch event horizon and pet sematary and watch tale of two sisters and eraserhead for the first time.Sorry this turned into a blog! And diverted from true horror.[Edited on January 6, 2007 at 2:20 AM. Reason : BOO][Edited on January 6, 2007 at 2:25 AM. Reason : recommend me more!]

Most of the time, for horror movies to have any real appeal, they need to have some sense of this can affect you. Texas chainsaw massacre goes at this with the documentary, based on a true story, this guy is still out there sorta thing. Silent Hill may have some of the same effect for religious people with its hellish demon stuff. (plus all the lesbian, violence, video game feel, visuals & sound effect stuff)

i think intelligent is a pretty generous description of the movies you listed krazed. i know what you mean, but thats a stretch.no reason to avoid a movie because it was a video game either (assuming it came out in theaters at least). Silent Hill wasnt the best movie ever, but it was just as good as some others you mentioned.

horror movies aren't scary to me. i make MYSELF scared by letting my mind play tricks on me, but the movies never scare me. i settle for essentially pure thrill/violence/suspense now. cheesy gore is fun, but horrible acting just never sits well (and so MOST B-flicks drive me nuts now). i just want to be entertained. the new TCM (Beginning) made me black out in the theater. i'm apparently becoming sensitive to the SOUND of gore, but not so much the sight of it.[Edited on January 9, 2007 at 7:49 PM. ok i just finished watching Event Horizon after reading how some folks on the internet tout it as one of the scariest movies....i'm quite dissappointed...it is not scary at all...the plot is weak...the acting is not believable (sam neill was the worst)......there was not much horror scenes......the best horror was probably the quick flashes but it was so quick i had to pause just to see.......movie was like hellraiser in space only not as much horrori would rate it a 3/10. almost like a straight to TV movie.am i missing something?

i liked hight tension a lot. thought it was pretty scary. but it's definitely not realistic. in fact, there are huge gaping plot holes that could easily ruin the movie for some. but for me, the gore and the...high tension...kept me in it.
1/12/2007 5:26:49 AM
haught tension would have been better without the plot twist.
