Because of my job with the Navy here in the Middle East, we get to go to Dubai a lot.. The place is completely unreal.. Downtown Dubai has what looks to be several hundred skyscrapers all going up at the same time.. Imagine trying to build all of New York at once. The standard of living here is so much better than the US (although, the flip side of that is that poverty is disgustingly inhumane in their ghetto-equivalents). I'm about to move into my first apartment (paid for by Uncle Sam) that's the size of my parent's house back in NC, fully furnished with high-speed internet, marble floors, and, since the Navy is forcing me to spend every dime of my off-base housing benefits, they're throwing in a lease on a car for a year with insurance. That's the norm for the city of Manama, Bahrain.

Dubai number #1number one at fire safety and killing their exploited immigrant labor. gg you fuckersthis entire thread is fucking stupid as shit - building cool shit isn't really that extraordinary - it just seems awesome in the middle east where usually you fuckers can't stop blowing yourselves up long enough to rebuild your bulldozed houseshttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070118/ap_on_re_mi_ea/dubai_skycraper_fire_2[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 10:04 AM. well, that^ wasn't very politically correct, but, yeah, he's pretty much right
1/18/2007 10:07:35 AM
^^ Humans will forever exploit other humans; that shouldn't surprise anyone. Their buildings and wealth are beyond comparison. Their laws and views on human rights are still in the biblical era in a lot of places..
1/18/2007 12:31:35 PM
they could power 10-15 apartments off of the energy they're wasting on rotating this building, and a rotating building isn't even a new concept.

I'm gonna laugh a lot when the oil runs out. Either that or when the terrorists decide to attack them b/c of their western corruption ( )
1/18/2007 1:28:20 PM
Brown on Brown crime, eh?
1/18/2007 1:34:12 PM
^^ only 6% of dubai's GDP is from oil, but good try
1/18/2007 1:39:11 PM
their tourism industry is supported by rich oil moguls from neighboring countries though. when the oil fields stop being so cheap to pump out, UAE will be quickly toppled by all their greedy neighbors.
1/18/2007 1:44:17 PM
^thank you[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 1:48 PM. Reason : of course i was aware that that tiny country didn't have a lot of oil, come on...]
1/18/2007 1:47:53 PM
well, dubai is an emirate of The UAE, its not its own country.the UAE is actually very rich in oil, but Dubai is different from the other emirates in that only a small part of its GDP is from oil.
1/18/2007 1:50:34 PM
this is not possible...someone in another country other than the US has cool shit and a wealthy economy. this thread is all lies.it should be locked and deleted.[Edited on January 18, 2007 at 3:21 PM. Reason : fda]

http://www.infinitytower.com/World's tallest twisting tower.330 m (1,083 ft) tall. Twists by 90 degrees. Each floor twists by 1.2 degrees compared to the previous one. Apparently there is only one other tower in the world to do that, The Turning Torso, in Sweden, which is 190 m (623 feet) high:
3/31/2007 3:25:18 AM
well, at least you didn't make another thread about it
3/31/2007 6:02:26 AM
and how many twisting skyscrapers are there??? laying claim to that would be like saying, "italy's oldest american soul food restaurant".
3/31/2007 6:23:49 AM
like once you get to dubai and pay $1000 to stay in a hotel....what are you supposed to DO there?! Its blazing hot pretty much year around......golf?they need to concentrate on fighting poverty at some point.....they ironically have the worst in the entire middle east, and the lowest paid workers....it's awfuldoes anybody else continually say "your welcome" everytime you see a dubai feat? It's all our money
3/31/2007 10:03:45 AM
they are building the worlds largest theme park, mall and aquarium. they already have indoor skiing, sand skiing and typical ocean rec. theres plenty to DO and the regular hotels that don't break records are actually pretty cheap.
3/31/2007 11:12:12 AM
yeah, dubai is shifting into the tourism market. their king/prince/whatever is smart.

I read somewhere that 20% of the world's construction cranes are in Dubai right now. That must be an insane sight to walk around and see that many buildings going up at one time.
4/5/2007 9:56:01 AM
^ really? wow!according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_the_worldof the top 200 tallest buildings in the world, 8 are in Dubai.but there are 17 buildings under construction all slated to be taller than 300 meters. and they will all be finished in a year or two.and these 17 will all be in the top 50 tallest by the time they are finished!!! count the cranes in just this one pic with like 3-4 buildings in view! OK, as if a rotating tower (1st post of this thread) wasn't enough, guess what is being planned now...A tower with individually rotating FLOORS Wind Powered Rotating Skyscraper!!!And the speed and direction apparently can be controlled, so the skyscraper will keep on constantly changing shape!YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/v/vJRDZE5xW2Y (MUST SEE)(reminds me of a Rubik's Cube)http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117625795099465923-WFaTx4FSsy1oW4x8lS4eK1518io_20070418.htmlClick link for video simulation.

so if I, as an American, wanted to visit Dubai for vacation would the dubaians be like "omg look an american throw rox!" or would they be like "look the tourists have arrived!". i mean i don't want to get all the way over there and have to ask the waiter to hold the spit. what is the typical UAE citizen's view of the typical american citizen?
