the highlights I saw, he looked like a very average ball handler (as far as D1 goes). all he really did was switch directions with a crossover and once in a while do a spin dribble. The dude can shoot, but it's not like he's gonna be breaking ankles or anything.

He played very tough scrappy defense the whole time, he really made an effort and forced some turnovers. As for his shooting, he never got the ball because 'Bama was always all over him, especially toward the end, because they knew he could help shoot us back out of the hole. He really did not get enough play time for us to truly see his talents. But he's been out of the game just as long as Costner was and it took Costner multiple games to get his shit together and find his offensive game.

Yeah. Agreed. Costner was all over the place tonight. I felt like he singlehandedly brought us within striking distance within the last few minutes. Grant had a decent night I thought, save for all the missed shots. Oh well. And McCauley was great.

Ferguson really looked nervous. His passes were pretty atrocious all night, but I think this is something that can be worked on pretty easily. Let him get 30-40 minutes against the next division totalsuck team we play and get him to start firing. He should be really really good, if not after this season.

Fergie is a better point guard than Gavin Grant. He'll get his shot, and he was a lot better on D than I expected. Alabama's guards are really good.

Don't judge him by this game. He was lost a lot out there and overpowered by the scene of his first college game. He plays tough D, I like it. He has a good handle on the ball but didn't make good passes tonight. Things will be better with this guy.

Ferguson really wasn't as shaky as i thought he was going to be. He did throw the ball away a few times but once he plays a few more games i think he'll get in a better rythym and sidney will find a way to utilize his shooting ability.

I think he looked better than Neiman out there on the floor. He's got instinct. Neiman just looks kinda lost.

and he did make a better point than Gavin. I dunno what was wrong with GG last night, he was probably just tired as fuck from playing every minute of every game.

I'm sure it didn't help that everyone kept chanting "shoot it" everytime he touched the ball regardless of whether he was on the other end of the court or had five people guarding him. I don't think he felt like he had a shot he wanted at the right time.

b/c Nieman has been playing in the system for all the games so far. This is Fergies first game in like 2 years so why wouldnt Nieman get more minutes.

Plus, Nieman is a "steal" machine. He has had at least one steal in each of the last 3 games IIRC. Not to mention that money alley he threw last night.

OMG, Fells is a SKYWALKER. That dunk he made last night in the first half was amazing. He was so far up in the air and he jumped about a step behind the lower block and just kep rising. wow

Gavin had a nice game last night but he couldnt get the points rolling.
I mean, he almost had a triple double.

Can someone post the box score, i dont have time to look for it. I would like to see what everyone did.

"RALEIGH – NC State’s comeback from a 23-point second-half deficit came up one stripped ball and a 3-point basket short Wednesday night against No. 10 Alabama. But the fact that the Wolfpack managed to get within six points of the Crimson Tide in the final 30 seconds of the game gave Sidney Lowe reason to be proud of his team’s ability to fight back.

“I thought our guys didn’t give up,” Lowe said following his team’s 82-75 loss to Alabama Wednesday at the RBC Center in front of 16,456 fans. “That is the main thing. I thought we were actually going to have a chance at it. I was proud of the way we hung in there.”

The Crimson Tide (10-1) was red-hot from the field in the first half, making 56.7 percent of its shots. Meanwhile, the Wolfpack was offensively impatient, intent on forcing up too many bad shots against Alabama's zone defense. State was a meager 41.4 percent from the field in the first half, including only 2 of 11 from 3-point range.

Eventually, the Crimson Tide pushed its lead to 23 points with 8:47 remaining in the second half, before the Wolfpack (7-3) began a lively comeback on the shoulders of sophomore forward Ben McCauley and redshirt freshman forward Brandon Costner, who scored 19 of his career-high 25 points after halftime.

The Wolfpack cut the lead all the way down to six points, and had an opportunity to get closer, until Alabama’s Mykal Riley stripped the ball out of Costner’s hands with about 11 seconds remaining in the game. Had the Wolfpack scored on that possession, things might have gotten interesting in the waning seconds.

“The bottom line is, we dug ourselves too big a hole,” said McCauley, who had 24 points and nine rebounds in the contest. “We showed we can play with teams like Alabama and we can even win, but the fact is, we got down too big, too early and it was an uphill battle the whole way back.

“I feel like if we do what we did in those last few minutes whole game, every game, we should be fine.”

The Wolfpack, which had won its previous seven home games, managed to put pressure on the Crimson Tide in the final six minutes, thanks in part to the defensive play of redshirt freshman guard Trevor Ferguson, who sat out the Wolfpack’s first nine games after transferring in from Pittsburgh mid-way through last season.

The defense forced 17 turnovers, and Costner and McCauley made big shots, allowing the Pack to cut deeper and deeper into Alabama’s lead.

“We stopped playing tentative and started attacking,” said Costner, whose previous career-high was 20 points against Delaware State in the second game of the season. “We started going to the basket and not shooting as many 3s. I was more aggressive in the second half, as we all were. It was just disappointing that we dug ourselves so big of a hole that we couldn’t come out of it.”

Costner’s 25 points led the Wolfpack, followed by McCauley’s 24. Junior Gavin Grant, still playing out of position at point guard, ran the Wolfpack offense and came close to scoring the team’s first triple-double since his old high school teammate, Julius Hodge, pulled off the feat four years ago. Grant had seven points, a career-high tying 10 assists and eight rebounds on the night before fouling out with 27.2 seconds to play.

For the Crimson Tide, Richard Hendrix scored 23 points and Riley had 17.

With senior guard Engin Atsur out for the fifth consecutive game with a hamstring injury, the Wolfpack got a much-needed injection of depth with Ferguson’s arrival. The Palm Harbor, Fla., product entered the game with 10:08 remaining in the first half, to a loud ovation. He contributed three points, four assists and two rebounds. He also added a spark to the Wolfpack defense in the second half that pleased Lowe, who noted that Alabama shot only 34.5 percent in the second half after its sizzling shooting performance in the first half.

“That was all because of defensive pressure, which I think was a direct result of Trevor Ferguson coming in and picking up some pressure on the defensive end,” said Lowe, whose team returns to action Saturday in a noon game at Cincinnati, a game that will be televised on ESPNU. “That ignited us some on the offensive end.”

In the end, the Wolfpack couldn’t complete the comeback, which was a valuable lesson for Costner and his teammates.

“In the beginning of the game, we didn’t play smart,” Costner said. “We didn’t play NC State basketball. We took bad shots, quick shots.

“If we played like we were supposed to play, we wouldn’t have had to come back. But it does show what we are capable of.”

i agree, your FIRST EVER COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAME is against a 10th rank team in the nation. He was raping them dudes on D. His shots will come. I think he did the right thing not shooting really. I rather him prove himself defensively before he goes out and hits a lot of 3's.
