like I said, chat about legal bittorrent uses and issues is fine, which thankfully this thread has steered back toward, in your absence.

You should have claimed that you downloaded it, but you didn't watch it
12/19/2006 7:29:44 PM
the crime is the fact that you are uploading to other people

I got caught downloading Tiger Woods PGA 2007. the ESA sent an email to NC State, I was scared to death. Since it was my first offense nothing happened, I don't use NC State's internet for illegal puposes anymore.
12/19/2006 8:31:35 PM
^same exact thing. the only real consequence was me failing a statics test i was so unnerved.and yes, the very legal email stated that uploading was the reason i was in trouble
12/19/2006 9:18:29 PM
u Downloaded TG07 too?and the game sucks, it wasn't even worth the trouble.
12/19/2006 11:25:55 PM

^^no, i was downloading tv shows, im just saying the result was the same
12/20/2006 2:47:16 AM
oh, I just wonder if they caught us because we were using Resnet. Would we have gotten caught, if we were using our internet at home?
12/20/2006 2:55:09 AM
if it was the same torrent, then they'd have your ip no matter what isp you're on. But some ISPs are easier targets than others. ResNet will sell your ass down the river asap. They dont want you shitting up their network with torrents. Whereas someone like Road Runner would more likely ignore or dismiss it until they come back with more lawyers. Although they might be more inclined to do something if its a TimeWarner property.

^true that
12/22/2006 11:46:15 AM
if you spoof the MAC address for your wireless interface, use an insecure access point and block all outgoing packets on the wireless interface except BitTorrent data it would be fairly unlikely for it to be traced to yourselfI imagine it'd be even less likely if you cracked a secure access point to utilize for BitTorrent, as the owners of the access point would likely have a difficult time proving the traffic did not come from their network

edit tracker? Also, how is the RIAA and the MPAA aquiring these IP addresses? I fathom they have their own servers they are making software avail for download and then seeing who connects to them?
12/24/2006 6:15:01 PM
nah cuz then they wouldnt catch you breaking the lawif they are making their property available for download then its freewareand i dont think they can say you cant share it at that point so there would be no infringementi think they just try to download their shit from random people and see who they connect toalthough its a larger operation than just one guy sitting at a deskbut im talking out of my ass

Got a question.Under Seeds and Peers, it's usually listed something like 10(25) and 10(30), or something to that effect. What do these numbers mean? I tried to google but didn't really get it explained.Additionally, for a given torrent, if no seeds exist, is it possible that the torrent is still scattered across all peers...or...does the tracker keep up with how many full copies (thusly, seeds) exist across all peers. So for example, if computer A has a full copy, a seed, and 2 clients connect to A to start downloading this torrent, for whatever reason, if computer B has 1/2 of the torrent, and computer C has the other half of the torrent, will this count as 2 seeds now (A + B & C together)?[Edited on February 27, 2007 at 8:12 PM. Reason : a]

the first number is how many you're connected to and the number in parentheses is how many are available
