I organized a food drive for the Durham Rescue mission at my office and we raised over $500 in canned food and money. Their facility caught fire not too long ago and they need all the help they can get to get back up and running.there are so many things you can do...if you cant donate money or food or money then you can donate your time. everything helps.

I prefer to use my money to buy stuff for myself and my family. It helps the economy to buy items, and a healthy economy gives the poor more chances to earn a living.don't let the economy be drained by pissing your money away to "help" these people... you are just hurting them further by giving them less economic opportunities in the long run.

Y'know, no.I get barraged every day at work for some charity - which one changes about once a week.I pay welfare, social security, and medicare, and bring home like 60 cents on every dollar i earn after the government is done with it all.Far as I'm concerned about 5-10 cents of every single dollar I earn already IS going to charity becuase the IRS says I have to.And no, i do not benefit from any of these things and nor am I likely ever TO benefit from them.[Edited on December 7, 2007 at 9:10 AM. 12/7/2007 9:09:17 AM
thats a great way to look at the situation its not like you are the only person the govt. takes money from. there are several people here locally that never see any of the money the IRS takes out of our check.i just know i feel better about myself when i help people less fortunate than I am. Kinda like how i spent 5 years volunteering with my local EMS as an EMT to help save lives. The only reward i got was knowing i was making a difference in someones life.
12/7/2007 9:18:06 AM
yeah almost a third of my check goes to charity after taxes are through with me.[Edited on December 7, 2007 at 9:54 AM. Reason : ]

Why has this turned in to a "I'm too lazy or self-righteous to give back because I pay taxes thread"?The only thing I have to say in reponse to that... is "karma". What goes around, comes around.Back on topic, another big cause of mine is the NC Children's Hospital because that is where my younger sister's best friend passed away last year on Dec. 28 of rare, double-lung cancer in a 19 year old. Her short 3-week battle changed all of our lives. Spend one afternoon there and it won't be about "taxes" anymore.http://www.unchealthcare.org/site/NCChildrensHospital/I love the NC Children's Hospital because it has events that go on year round that give you an opportunity to give back. Also, friendly reminder, for those of you who will be at Buckhead on Saturday, Toys for Tots. Bring a toy, skip cover, skip the line. If everyone who went to the bar on Saturday night brought a toy think about the size of the donation we'd be making. I'm not promoting, I'm trying to get as many donations as possible. Heck, you can even drop a toy by for all I care the day of before we even open! It's not about selling booze.Last, still waiting on a date for the annual downtown "come one, come all" lunch/dinner that I mentioned last season. For anyone who wants to cook or serve, I'll post the info on here as soon as I get it! Feel free to PM me your email addy if you know you're definitely interested already and want info ASAP!

"give back" to who? when have those people ever helped me in the slightest?(except for the one time a bum helped me figure out what freeway to get on in downtown LA... I gave him the change from my change drawer in my car. does that count?)
12/13/2007 7:57:48 PM
^^ So karma's going to get me because I dont give to charities?Thereby obviously I do mean and nasty things all day long and never help anyone is the logic going here?Nice assumptions. Not really on par though.

^^I'd rather them work an unpleasant job than depend on handouts and my tax dollars. Some of them would rather die than work those jobs... Well if they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population

Thanks!I kicked off our annual food drive this week for our company. I am pretty proud of getting this organized and implemented at my company.Last year we raised over $500 worth of food and nonperishable items for the Durham Rescue Mission. DRM lost about 1/2 of their food donations in this fire which put a strain on the Food Bank.We are donating to them again this year. If anyone would like to donate any canned food or nonperishable food items then shoot me a PM. i will meet you or come and pick up donations that are within reasonable driving distance._______________________________________________________________________and this thread isnt really up for discussing how you feel about giving. I would appreciate if you take the negativity out of this thread and start a new if you feel like making your opinions known.[Edited on November 12, 2008 at 5:34 PM. PS i think that this weekend is the toys for tots drive at the NCSU Wake game, if i remember correctly, yes?

would like to find an angel tree (especially if they have one for the elderly?) in addition to my regular toys for tots donation...they used to be found in malls, but lately all I see are "habitat for humanity" trees...anyone know where I can find an Angel Tree in the Cary area??I also donate books at Barnes and Noble...I have always loved to read and it makes me sad that there are children (and teenagers) out there that don't have books, so I tend to buy a book every time I go in for their book drive...[Edited on November 13, 2008 at 6:20 PM. So if ya got any extra winter wear that you are not going to be wearing or any from last christmas from your aunt that you will NEVER be wearing you now know where to send em!

i just got back from urban ministries in greensborowow this place is freaking AMAZING. it is faith based but it isn't like uber faith based. and by faith, they mean all faith (their mission is serving others through god). like they are supported by over 200 faith organizations (all faiths) in gboro area.they have a shelter, a food bank, a soup kitchen, a clothing bank....and more.i worked in the clothing bank today. but if you are in the greensboro area this is a GREAT opportunity for volunteering.http://www.greensborourbanministry.org/

^ There are tons of breed-based organizations. They actually had a huge win this year when Hank, a rescued dog, became Circuit City's Firedog mascot. It was a great thing: http://ncsulilwolf.blogspot.com/2008/01/hank-won.htmlIn other news, I think you can still contribute to the NC Children's Hospital campaign that went on this week... they raised just over $800K last year in this one day event and as of 11am today, have passed the million dollar mark.If you've listened to 96 Rock or 94.7 WQDR yesterday or today, I'm sure you've heard the amazing stories. I personally signed up for the $12 x 12month donation - doesn't seem like a lot but it's $144 of support over the year. You can read more about my personal connection to it here: http://ncsulilwolf.blogspot.com/2008/11/nc-childrens-promise-final-number-is.html[Edited on November 21, 2008 at 7:11 PM. Reason : firedog]
