Great, thanks teh_toch! Also, I forgot to say another funny thing from my pointless call to TWC was that the representative suggested I might want to try satellite. Why suggest going to the competition??

I was asking about this because my current TV does have an ATSC tuner in it (all TVs as of 3/1/07 are required to, before that it was just larger screen TVs) but the reception with the antenna isn't that great. I live in Durham and get a few channels wonderfully but some I have a hard time getting or constantly pause and get pixelated. Watching the NCAA Tournament is great in HD until you get to the final minutes of a close game and the pauses in reception cause you to miss critical seconds of the game. I don't think going back to using an antenna is the best option unless you get good reception and not everyone will. I also don't think TW is too lazy to filter out channels with HD content that they are rebroadcasting from over the air. I think that these digital broadcasts fall under the same "Must-carry" rule that the analog broadcast channels do. The don't, however, have a must carry rule for the other 5 potential side channels, just the primary one. Hence the need for a QAM tuner.

Must-Carry doesn't apply to digital multicast (and local HD feeds for that matter).. I believe most cable companies carry them in the clear since they are freely available OTA.. maybe they hope that once they see HD feeds over cable that they'll invest in digital cable to receive more HD channels. Some reasons may be from the affiliates negotiating deals with the cableco's to broadcast in the clear or no HD feed at all.

Its mandated by the FCC that all broadcast station signals, both analog and digital, be available to customers with the most basic package available.
4/1/2007 12:29:14 PM
Now why the FCC didn't mandate that all digital tvs had to have QAM tuners is something to wonder...
4/1/2007 4:25:02 PM
^^ since when has the FCC mandated digital must-carry?? if i remember correctly.. the FCC had trouble even getting a majority to approve the mandate summer last year. now digital-only stations can elect must-carry.. but when they have an analog transmission.. the analog can follow must-carry or retransmission consent and the digital can only follow retrans consent.

what channel is cw hd?
4/2/2007 1:09:43 AM
22.1
4/2/2007 1:15:10 AM
Man - I don't get 22.1 - Just says "not available"
4/2/2007 3:45:35 PM
try hard tuning to RF frequency 77.
4/2/2007 7:02:54 PM
I have no idea what that means. I just have basic cable from the wall into the TV - No cable box.
4/2/2007 10:22:12 PM
22.1 is just a PSIP channel #.. makes it easier for the consumer to know the channel and its subchannels instead of the exact frequencies and such..WLFL-HD and RDC-HD are on frequency 77 and are mapped to 22.1 and 28.1 respectively.See if you can manually add digital channels on your tv, and add frequency 77. Once you add that you should be able to tune in using 22.1 and 28.1

^ I read the Raleigh -HDTV thread on avsforum all the time.. just don't remember anything posted way back when.

Anyone else having issues? I still have to tune to 113.1-5

OKAY.you people that are getting HD over TWC basic cable with nothing else:your fancy HDTV comes with a tuner built-in to it that is able to receive over-the-air non-encrypted digital cable channels. that is what QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) is. most digital channels are not broadcast in unencrypted QAM, this is why your tuners pick up a lot of channels with "no signal" - it just can't decrypt the channel is all.a cablecard fixes this. the cablecard is basically a decryption module that's made to be universal to tuners, kind of like a PCI card for a computer. with a cablecard, your tuner (whether it be your HDTV's tuner, a tivo series3, or whatever) will be able to receive ALL of the digital/HD channels that you're entitled to receive, including the encrypted ones. the only difference is that you can't use the on demand or iN PPV features (basically anything requiring 2-way communication).TWC will happily give you a cablecard for a nominal fee. just make sure your tuner supports it. that way you'll be able to get all of the digital channels without a box, including discovery HD and TNT HD. if you don't want (or your tuner can't support) a cablecard, you'll be able to pick up any HD and digital channels broadcast over the wire in unencrypted QAM.if you've got any more questions, PM me.]

lol[Edited on June 3, 2007 at 11:46 AM. Reason : and not ever HD TV has a QAM tuner]

I have an ATSC receiver; what would I get if I hooked it up to my cable line? I suspect I won't get anything, since the frequencies on-which it is going to look for digital channels are filled with analog channels. And all the digital content it could receive is in the 200+ range, but being an over-the-air receiver it doesn't go any higher than 69. or am I wrong? Thanks !
6/3/2007 12:57:59 PM
ATSC tuners only pickup atsc broadcasts (in this country.. anything transmitted in 8VSB).. cable lines carry QAM digital channels.. two different things.. you won't pick up anything digital on your atsc tuner.. even if the frequency is below 69.

Why do they always move the damn channels around? WRAL is gone again.
