aha, i just pictured cal ripken in shoulder pads, awesomeoh, and FAVREif only because of the greater risks of injury and greater chance of being benched (although that's now next to nil^infinity)
12/1/2006 2:46:20 PM
How often have you seen someone miss a game because of getting hit by a fastball?I can't think of anyone other than pitchers...
12/1/2006 2:47:46 PM
Actually now I think the streaks are very different, and almost equally impressive.Favre's streak is impressive in that he is lucky enough that he didn't get a major injury and tough enough to shake off minor ones.Ripkin had to worry about injury less, but the fact that he had the endurance to go out there every day for 16 years is crazy.
12/1/2006 2:52:48 PM
Hold up we need Ryan's Cal Ripken 'Lights Out' story in here about how the O's kept his streak going one time
12/1/2006 2:58:17 PM
ok, i just asked him about it - apparently Kevin Costner and co. were filming the movie 'The Postman' at Ripken's house, and supposedly Ripken came home to find his wife in bed with Kevin Costner, and subsequently whooped Costner's assRipken called ahead to Camden Yards saying that he didn't feel like going in and playing that night, and the Orioles cut off the lights, with the official statement being that there was a 'Lighting Malfunction'... no game was played that evening and the streak was kept alivethanks to prb185could be BS, but it is fun to think about

football players have a tougher time hiding their steroid abuse
12/1/2006 3:27:20 PM
I don't know. Favre may get the edge because he's being chased by 300 lb lineman all the time. However, baseball does have some freaky injuries sometimes, so surviving that long should be acknowledged.I will go with Favre.
12/1/2006 3:30:03 PM
^^^ that is bullshit.http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/costner.htm[Edited on December 1, 2006 at 3:50 PM. Reason : g]
12/1/2006 3:49:55 PM
he actually found the site afterwards, but it's still fun to picture cal kicking costner's ass
12/1/2006 3:55:26 PM
Farve, baseball just sucks no comparison
12/1/2006 4:25:24 PM
come on gunzz...my sports talk threads are way better than this

Panthro for Mod of Sports Talk!!
12/1/2006 4:29:47 PM
^^ in what world? This is a legitimate argument and not one that can be 'won.' I only brought it up because they were talking about it on the morning sports show out here...
12/1/2006 5:57:58 PM
In baseball the biggest source of injury is yourself.Cal Ripken's record is kind of like saying "hey, I played 16 sesons without hurting myself"Whereas Favre's record is more like saying "hey, I've gone 14 years without someone breaking me in half"Favre, hands down.
12/1/2006 7:16:33 PM
they should let barry bonds charge people unexpectedly and injure them. maybe people would find the sport interesting again if that happened.
12/1/2006 8:06:20 PM
Anyone who says Ripken is a fucking idiot who knows nothing about the difference between catching a ground ball and catching a 300 pound linebacker to the side of the face.
12/1/2006 8:26:37 PM
i love that my "300lb (beasts)" is being picked up by everyone.
12/1/2006 9:30:55 PM
Favre - The only position in baseball that even closely compares to QB is catcher.....and I would still give it to Favre.....Besides the last couple of years have been a bit down.....his stats and longevity make him in my mind the best QB ever !! But to be fair I have been a life long GB fan
12/2/2006 7:42:19 AM
Favre by about 12 million miles times seven
12/2/2006 8:22:16 AM
it's like... just b/c everyone on here hates baseball, they don't realize how impressive what ripken did is. that's cool.
12/2/2006 12:31:51 PM
12/2/2006 12:56:06 PM
Ripken played more than 16 games a season. Favre could take practice off for a week and show up on Sunday. Ripken never did that, for 16 years.
12/2/2006 11:52:38 PM
two thousand eight hundred thirty two games.
12/3/2006 12:22:44 AM
Cal Ripken Jr. Who else can can play that many games and still have enough energy to hit a homerun in your final All Star game and get the mvp. what a badass. Farve was drunk for the first 10 years of his career so he couldnt feel the pain.Cal in a landslide
12/3/2006 2:56:25 AM
12/3/2006 2:57:26 AM
there are so many rules protecting the qb that favre might only get hit 'hard' once a game.
12/3/2006 10:25:03 AM
12/3/2006 11:07:07 AM
Its tough to compare these two streaks.....Cal's is rediculously long in a less physical sport, but he played through some pretty crazy injuries (broken fingers and torn muscles)Favre's streak is long too and he took more of a beating but had less injuries than Cal....hmmmmI go with Cal...more production at the end of his streak
12/3/2006 3:28:41 PM
12/3/2006 3:42:40 PM
Hard to compare, Cal plays baseball which means he plays a LOT more games and has less rest time in between, which makes it very impressive. But Favre has more physically demanding games.Hard to say, I could go either way.
12/3/2006 6:28:00 PM
I think you are comparing two different things, but if I had to choose I'd go with Favre. I played football and baseball in high school and I'd have to say my body was more worn out after football season. Granted, our baseball season wasn't nearly as long as MLB, but football in the NFL is A LOT more physical than high school football. Either way it is two very impressive records.
12/3/2006 7:28:34 PM
Why are we comparing these two streaks? They are two of the greatest streaks in sports hands down. Football is more demanding, Baseball plays 164 games per year.No one is even CLOSE to Ripken. No one is CLOSE to Favre either. You can't really compare the two.

Glenn Hall with his 502 consecutive games played in the NHL. The longest by a goalie. And he did that shit without a mask on his face./thread
