looking actually pretty good so far!

maybe he's put the lolerskates up for a while, even though he does seem sluggish a lot of the time.

If he didn't have to worry about playing nearly 40 minutes a game then i would call him lazy but the amount of minutes he's expected to play every game is pretty difficult, especially for a big man. We need him in there rebounding, especially if he can pull down double digit rebounds a game. His shot will come around, and plus Ferguson will be back this week so that will take some of the burden off of Costner to take so many shots.

Costner's key to shooting 3s is to never ever set his feet.

seriously, he makes every shot when he just dribbles and pops. anything thats a set shot is less likely to go in

but damn, if he can start getting a little help off the bench and improve his inside game a little, i think hes gonna be a great player for us.

Big ups for Costner getting his game on.

I, along with many people, sighed and cringed every time he got the ball the first game or two.

He's now becoming our go-to guy, as displayed by the Bama ending where he nearly single-handedly pulled us out.

I like a guy that WANTS the ball in the clutch.

So, GG BC.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Playing basketball feels comfortable again to Brandon Costner.

The power forward for NC State believes he is rounding into form after missing the 2005-06 season with a stress fracture in his upper leg. Things like handling the ball, cutting, making his moves and playing instinctively are feeling natural to him.

"I felt like myself again," Costner said after the Pack beat Wake Forest 88-74 last Saturday for its first ACC win in four games. "I hadn't really felt that comfortable all year. Hopefully it's starting to turn around. It takes awhile to get back into it."

Costner scored 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists in that game, but one play in particular might have signaled his return to feeling healthy. In the second half, he drew a defender to him on the perimeter, where he had hit a couple of 3-pointers.

This time, Costner put the ball on the floor and drove to the hoop for an emphatic dunk.

"He's a tough player offensively, almost as good as they get for a power forward," said Wake's Kyle Visser. "He can handle the ball, can shoot the ball from outside and you saw that one he finished. It's a tough match-up."

Costner is a red-shirt freshman and Visser said in the next three years he could become "a scary player." Certainly the Pack will need will need similar efforts from him the rest of the season, starting with Saturday's game against Duke at 3:30 p.m. in Raleigh.

"I've been very pleased with Brandon's play," said NC State coach Sidney Lowe. "He's shown that he can help you win ball games a number of ways - rebounding, scoring the basketball inside and outside, and he is a decent ball-handler at his position."

Costner has become an integral part of the lineup, averaging 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds and leading the team with 28 3-pointers.

He also averages 35 minutes per game. Early in the season he was reluctant to put up his fist to signal for a sub because of the Pack's thin depth. Against Wake, he didn't hesitate.

"If you get tired, put the fist up and coach will get us a sub and get us right back in there," Costner said. "That really helped a lot. We were able to play harder for longer, we were able to pressure the ball more and do some things on defense we weren't able to do before."

Players like Bryan Nieman, Trevor Ferguson and Darrell Davis were able to log some important minutes and give the starters some breaks. When point guard Engin Atsur (pulled hamstring) returns to the lineup, the Pack's depth will improve even more.

Lowe said that Costner, who realized he would have to play a lot of minutes, would occasionally take a quick breather on the court.

"He and I have talked about continuing to play hard every single second that you're out on the floor," Lowe said. "At times, he tried to get a rest here and get a rest there. I told him `now we're getting to the point where you don't have to do that, you play until you're tired. You take yourself out, you give me the signal, and then you put yourself back in.'

"He did that in the Wake Forest game and had a great game."

Costner's competitive instincts should keep him playing hard the rest of the season. Part of that comes from being the son of a former player. Tony Costner, who at 6-10 is two inches taller than Brandon, was a superb high school player in Philadelphia who had an excellent career at St. Joseph's and played professionally for 12 years overseas.

Brandon carved out his own identity at Seton Hall Prep in Montclair, N.J. He was the New Jersey player of the year as a senior, a McDonald's All-American and third-team Parade All-American. Highly recruited, he chose NC State over Kansas, UCLA and Seton Hall.

But Costner's freshman year didn't go as planned. He took a knee in the thigh while drawing a charge but kept quiet for two weeks. It developed into a stress fracture and his season ended after five games (2.8 points, 2.6 rebounds). He received a medical red-shirt.

All he could do was rehab, much of it riding on an underwater treadmill. When the Pack hit a late-season slump, Costner was ready to toss that extra year of eligibility away, get back on the court and help.

"That was really tough for me because I had never been hurt before," he said. "I had to sit out the whole year and see my team and feel like I could help them."

Best friend and roommate Courtney Fells helped rein Costner back in.

"I just told him to stay with it (rehabbing his leg)," Fells said. "He wanted to come back and play early but I told him we've got to look at the big picture and that's for next year (2006-07). I just kept him positive and told him not to worry about things."

Costner was able to play again in May and continued to work to strengthen his leg and get his body back in condition.

"It takes something like an injury to bring you back down to earth," Costner said, "and it just shows (you) who you are if you're able to work through that."

Although he didn't feel like his old self, it was hard to tell early in the season. Costner scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in a win over UNC Wilmington, scored 25 points against Alabama and was in double figures every game.

Now that Costner feels comfortable again, there's no telling where his game might go.

"When teams put a big guy on him, we spread the court and let him go one-on-one because he's capable of putting the ball on the floor," Fells said. "Basically it's a mismatch in any game if they don't have a big guy who can stay with him. We look to give him the ball and let him do what he does.

"That's what's so great about him. He's a strong rebounder, he can put the ball on the floor, he can shoot threes and we're comfortable letting him do those things for us because we believe in him."

I don't know what to think about Costner...at times I think he is a beast and then there are times when I think to myself "he could have easily gotten that board" (or something along those lines).

My opinion of Costner has not yet been determined.

depth and our lack of it plays a role in costner's tendancy to take some plays off...

hopefully as our overall depth increases this season and in the next few, Costner will man up and play to his full potential.

you know... courtney finally had a real good game vs. wake forest too.

maybe it's b/c he's not trying to keep rested too. that'd be money if he's going to play like that every game now.

Brack played with a lot of hustle his freshman year, but he didn't have anywhere close to the raw talent that Costner does.

yeah costner had me worried the first few games with his offensive production but i had always thought he could be good. i'm really excited he's gotten so good so fast. he'll be a pleasure to watch as long as he stays.

here's hoping for 3 more years with the pack.

hey toughguy, i didn't say that. i said costner is bad (which he was) and horner will be good, and i meant over his career, which was obvious in the discussion. way to be an ass.

for the record, this is what i was responding to.

Set a new career high 30 pts. in tonight's win against Duke. As Jimmy Dykes said, "Costner's performance tonight has probably solidified him as an All-Tournament Team member," or something to that extent.

GG Costner, Atsur (21 pts) and the rest of the team. Hopefully if UVA starts double teaming Costner, it'll open up Ben, Gavin, Fells and others to come in and score more than they did tonight.
