this is a basketball state in general. I can't see any of the football programs in this state being uber good year in and year out. That's just the reality of it. Basketball will always be king. That's not a bad thing, though. just like ohio is a football state. Ohio State has years where they are really good in basketball and years where they are really bad. That said, a school like state and even carolina for that matter should have the ability to be a competitive team year in and year out in football. There's no excuse for a school like carolina to be as bad as they are. not that I wish them well, but you know what I'm saying.

^I think it's actually a good thing that most of those coaches turned us down.We need to just throw an ass load of texa$ @ Chow to get him back at OC.[Edited on October 30, 2006 at 4:49 PM. Reason : .]

Being a bball school is more than just, "how many championships do we have?" It's about consistently being ranked year after year, your recruiting classes, your tourney appearances, your coaches, your regular season and tourney performances, the opponents you play, the fact that the best high school players in the country come to you begging to play for your team rather than you having to go out and recruit them yourself, etc. Sure we were successful with Herb and I miss him as much as anyone else. But compared to the other schools in our state and considering the above, I still struggle to call us a bball school.

so by your (retarded) logic, UNC stopped being a basketball school while brad matt doherty was coach there.[Edited on October 30, 2006 at 5:15 PM. Reason : FUCK, sorry. still, logic is retarded]

I'm still waiting on all these friggen morons that think we don't have a great fanbase to tell me what a good fanbase is...The group of students that dont know shit about football and some drunk oldies booing him during the Clemson game last year does NOT qualify us as a bad fanbase. I'd say that TWW as a whole is a horrible fanbase, but of the 50k+ that pack Carter-Finley are a great fanbase. Always loud, always wearing red and dishing out money for tickets even when we aren't playing well. Duke is a bad fanbase (fair-weather fans, football=boo, basketball=we are gods). So how exactly do you consider the people in Carter Finley a bad fanbase? You must be talking about the pessimistic, ignorant (mostly) people on this website that can tear apart any game that the Wolfpack plays in.[Edited on October 30, 2006 at 5:12 PM. Reason : .]

no, I think I would still call UNC a bball school. Doherty wasn't the right coach for them, but that doesn't mean they stopped being a bball school, it doesn't mean that their fans stopped expecting excellent bball, it doesn't mean that they weren't still nationally recognized as a bball school.
10/30/2006 8:56:57 PM
^Are you asking if he is right about the number of championships? I can name them off the top of my head.Ours were 1974 and 1983. Duke was 1991, 1992, and 2001. UNC was 1957, 1982, 1993 and 2005.
10/30/2006 9:02:04 PM
well if my logic is so retarted, then let's hear what someone else has to sayi can't wait to read about how unc and duke aren't bball schools

Paul Johnson from NavyPat Hill from Fresno StateNorm Chow (even said he'd take the job)This is nothing like the Herb situation. Herb went to the tournament and got forced out, who wants to follow those expectations? If Chuck wins 3 or 4 games in a season and gets forced out, that's not exactly forcing out a great coach. All you are expected to do at NC State is beat your in-state rivals (who suck for the most part) and make a bowl, any bowl. With the facilities we have, it's an attractive job.
10/30/2006 10:15:59 PM
i feel like i recall chuck saying national championship....am i wrong?and i dont know what i am saying here, but just for reference Frank Beamer at VT1987- Head Coach, Virginia Tech 1987 (2-9) 1988 (3-8) 1989 (6-4-1) 1990 (6-5) 1991 (5-6) 1992 (2-8-1) 6 pretty bad seasons before he finally broke through with 9-3....Amato's record is probably a lot better than that. Since then, Beamer has built VT and put southwest VA on the map. But to stick to the topic, wouldn't it be nice to have his son Shane come here to coach. He is currently at Miss State. Keep the tradition of family coaches in the ACC (Bowdens at FSU and Clemson if you didnt get my drift)[Edited on October 30, 2006 at 10:32 PM. Reason : oh lots]
10/30/2006 10:25:49 PM
I would argue that Beamer has no competition for recruiting instate, he's a special teams genius, and he actually manages to have very little turnover in the assistant department. They're nothing alike.

JIM DONNANHead Coach, 1996-2000; (40-19) In Jim Donnan's five years as head coach, he compiled a 40-19 overall record including 25-15 in SEC play. The eight wins or more in four straight seasons set a school record. And for the first time in school history, the Bulldogs won four bowl games in four consecutive seasons (def. Wisconsin in '98 Outback Bowl; def. Virginia in '98 Peach Bowl; def. Purdue in '00 Outback Bowl, and def. Virginia in '00 Oahu Bowl). Under his direction, Georgia also finished in the nation's top 20 a school record four consecutive seasons. A native of Burlington, N.C., and graduate of N.C. State, Donnan came to Georgia following a record-setting run at Marshall. In his six years with the Thundering Herd, Donnan's teams won 64 games, one nationals championship, three national runner-up finishes, and earned five consecutive trips to the post-season playoffs. He was named National 1-AA Coach of the Year twice. He had previously been the architect of Oklahoma's high powered offenses from 1985-1989 where the Sooners won 49 games in those five years including 27 straight Big Eight contests and the 1985 National Championship.

^he's still in touch with the game b/c he works for ESPN. A little rusty it maybe less of a risk then cowher who has 0 head college coaching experience... He's had interest from tons of other schools but has turned it down. He loves NC State though.
10/31/2006 8:46:02 AM
It is crazy to think that they will fire Chuck after one really bad season. They have invested to much money and pride in supporting him. I think if we fired him this year we would have a simialr problem we had when Herb left. Who wants to come ton NC State when the fans and alumni call for your head after one really bad season? For all of Chuck's problems he still has the ability to recruit players from Florida. We need the speed and talent that comes out of that area. If you get a new coach then you will lose that and be forced to recruit from NC.
10/31/2006 9:15:19 AM
Here's what I'm saying"Promote" chuck to AD and fire fowler. Chuck could continue to milk the big donors and would probably do a great job of putting pressure on underperforming coaches.

As much as I want Chuck gone, it bothers me to know that even if we lose out he'll still be here next year. This situation isn't like Herb where we had a decent/good coach that another school would look at as a step-up, I don't think any other schools are going to come calling for Chuck, despite the fact that he probably wouldn't leave for anything other than FSU.We're stuck with hype hype hype, dissapoint dissapoint dissapoint for atleast two more years in my opinion, next year might actually be worse than this year, but it still probably wouldn't be enough for Fowler to cut Chuck.

Bill Cowher is not coaching at NCSU next year. IF he doesn't coach in Pitt next year, he will probably take a few years off, enjoy his family and his huge new house, and then get the itch to return to coaching. So please, please stop posting anything about Bill Cowher and NC State it isn't happening next year. Also, Chuck isn't going to be fired. Everyone here views success as wins and losses, which as students and fans we should. However, to the people that really call the shots success is money and as long as that keeps rolling in, and ticket sales remain up, and the stadium remains packed, then he isn't going anywhere. Now those things could change if we suck it up the rest of this year, and then next year, the following year the money flow would probably slow significantly. Thats when changes might happen.

can someone make a list of everyone who thinks chuck will be out after this seasoni'd like to tell those people they are retardsthanks

i guarandamntee chuck is gone if we end this season on a 7 game losing streak, and by judging the way our offense has played, that's very possible
11/1/2006 9:06:34 PM
i'll hold you to thathe's not going anywhere, not this year
11/1/2006 9:08:09 PM
i'm torn between cheering for us against ECU/UNC...If Chuck drops both of these games, he might get the fucking axe.But if he wins 4 games, he isn't going ANYWHERE
11/1/2006 9:51:08 PM
^As far as the UNC game goes. I don't give a shit, I want to beat UNC.
11/1/2006 10:32:39 PM
He won't get fired even if we lose out. The school already had one terrible coaching search, they don't need another one. It would take us losing out this year, and being terrible again next year which would cause a change in the money coming into the school. It is all about money, and as of now chuck is still bringing it in and filling the seats. money is the catalist for change and as long as the money is good chuck is safe.
