I wasn't joking about carrying around an unopened pack. (and a lighter/matches)

You should go right now and buy a pack (a brand you like) and get some free matches.

Put them in your pocket, backpack, briefcase, whatever......make sure they're always nearby.

Just don't smoke them. EVER.

IOW, don't limit your moments of temptation to just when you are around other smokers.

If you are only able to quit by avoiding (to some degree) other smokers then you both
.....may not have thoroughly quit by overcoming all temptations...
and
.....encourage douche-bag anti-smoking nazis (or even become one yourself!!!)

^ I have known others who have sort of done the same thing. I remember when my cousin was trying to quit dipping copenhagen he would want to carry my can of copenhagen in his pocket. It seemed pretty wierd but it worked for a while.

i buckled this weekend

smoked 2 on Sunday

...but that only makes it two over a 12 day span

not bad considering a month ago I was smoking ~200 over that amount of time

I've just started the quitting process. Talked to my doctor, and he prescribed Wellbutrin, the anti-depressant, which apparently has a 50% stop-smoking rate (better than patch or gum). I'm supposed to smoke like normal for the first week (around a pack a day), cut it in half the second week, and then quit after that. Meaning that if I make it, I will have my last cigarette a week from Thursday.

No idea how well it's working so far, I'm still in the "smoke like normal" phase, so cravings haven't really been an issue...although, ironically (given my instructions), I have seemed to want one less.

Day 11 on the gum, not bad at all. Only chewing like 4 or 5 a day.

Our quit date is feb 3rd. Do I want to quit? Yes and no-- But I know that I need to, so I am committed to trying my best. I don't want to be 30 and talking through a box at my throat. Plus it smells like shit–-unless you are trying to quit then its the best smell in the world.

yeah, i actually smoked half a cigarette yesterday to see if i still wanted to smoke. turns out, after a week of not smoking, it tasted nasty. so i cheated, but it helped me continue my "quit"

I quit on january 1st after 3.5 years of smoking at least a pack a day.... I started off on the patch.... but then quit that after a week and a half.... now I've gone around a week or so without anything... I still get a craving every once in a while... but it fades... I've found the best thing for me is toothpicks..... everytime I want a cig... I will stick a toothpick in my mouth and its worked great.... 22 days of not smoking a single cig or even taken a hit off one

That's what my dad did to quit smoking. He used the good ol' toothpick and he's been smoke free for nearly 30 years.

I smoked for over 20 years. (I started smoking when I was 9 years old.)

I finally quit smoking 9 months ago.

my motivation was my then 1-1/2 year old son. he started peeking at me from the window when i'd go out to have a cigarette.

the way i quit was Wellbutrin (aka Zyban). That stuff made me *abhor* the thought/smell of cigarettes.

I only took it for 3 weeks because i felt like i was crawling out of my skin, which is a common side effect. I'm sure the nicotine withdrawls didnt help that. but after three weeks i was over the worst of the urges.

still I have to remember my motivation to quit, because certain times/places/people/events can remind me of how i used to enjoy smoking

Lucky for me, I see my motivation every day. I think I'm pretty much in the clear now.

I'm not knocking it for anyone else, but I was allergic to this stuff. I broke out into hives and it was torture. When I got better I tried it again to make sure it wasn't something else, same results.

I only read through a little of this, but they have forums and all so you can ask others.

6 days cold turkey, I do have urges I just don't let them get the best of me. Drunk girl at a bar left her half pack at my table, gave 'em back

Get some of these toothpicks from Whole Foods:

http://www.teatreeplace.com/tooth_picks.html

They're flavored, good for your gums, good for your breath, and I'm told they make a great alternative to smoking because the taste and sensation of tea tree oil is distracting.
