Everybody has an opinion about what's a good starter bike and most people here seem to be on the conservative side. Probably partly because slower bikes are cheaper and this is a college forum. As for having a bike stolen, just make sure you have theft insurance. It is not much more expensive than just liability and a LOT cheaper than full coverage.

i don't think it has that much to do with it being a college forum. sportbike forums say the same thing.i'm not in college...i can comfortably afford any motorcycle I want (except maybe a few of those limited production ducatis or something), and if I were just starting out, I would get one of the aforementioned bikes.actually, i've owned 3 motorcycles (the last being a GSX-R 750), and ridden all kinds of different stuff (all sorts of different sportbikes, ranging from older 600s to new liter bikes, big cruisers and full-dress tourers, dirtbikes, you name it). my roommate has a new GSX-R 750 that he lets me ride whenever I want. However, I haven't owned a motorcycle in a couple of years, so when I (hopefully soon) get another bike of my own, I plan on getting an SV-650 just to ride for a while until I get my skills polished back up. Then, when I sell it for hopefully as much or more than I pay for it, I want to get a Triumph Daytona 675.Modern middleweights are EXTREMELY fast machines, and not for the beginner (not only because of the power...there are other reasons they aren't that well suited).

ah, hell... just go ahead and get one of these when it comes out.
10/6/2006 7:46:17 PM
Although I am definately partial to sport bikes, you may want to be looking at a cruiser. Standard touring bikes are tall, and you are talking about doing long trips. I've been browsing, and haven't found a decent standard touring bike for short people yet. The riding position on a cruiser is way different than a sport/standard bike, so you may want to get comfortable with either one or the other. You'll be able to flat foot a decent sized cruiser, so you'll be able to handle the weight a lot better. Also, buying an older cruiser will cut down on your chances of it getting stolen.
10/6/2006 7:57:49 PM
there are some small/short sport touring bikes. the aforementioned honda hawk for example...cruisers do offer a better height for shorter people, but there's also the additional weight/bulk most carry.

that shit way upsettin. if someone going to steal a 1982 cr 80 with 2 punctured tires right domr a trailer park, knowing well there's a shotgun-wielding drunk redneck sitting a few yards away, they sure as hell someone is scoping for my award-winning, berathtakenly beautiful ride.i think he said some niglet been seen riding that bike after it was stolen, that probably why they deleted his previous posts. craigslist is quite a bit more politically correct than tdub.
